This is one of the most iconic games from the 16-bit era and this Megadrive review of Golden Axe shows gameplay footage from this amazing 2D side scrolling beat em up hack and slash from 1989. Originally created as a brilliant Sega arcade game, Golden Axe saw popularity with its Sega Genesis release in '89. Players can choose from 3 different characters: Bohunk, dwarf and hot chick in bikini with sword. Each character has different strengths and magical abilities. The girl in her underwear can summon dragons and the other two summon girls in their underwear (no the don't, but it would be cool if they did!) Golden Axe is played from the Sega Genesis Collection on PS2 Playstation 2 for optimal video quality. It is a great collection as well, check out the PS2 Genesis collection for great games like the Golden Axe trilogy, Shinobi 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog. This game should also be on the Xbox 360 and PS3 Sega Genesis Ultimate collection. if you like Conan and swords and sorcerers kind of stuff then this game should be right up your alley. My grandmother lives way out in the country. Back in the day, the grocery store in the next town over had a Golden Axe machine. I always liked to play the dwarf because he was the only one with an axe.

awesome review. i like how in Golden Axe it starts playing the boss music about 1 screen before the boss shows up. for some reason i think that's so cool

This game brought me awesome memories. I'm planning on getting Sonic's Ultimate Genesis collection, and a Sega Genesis USB controller so that I can play it on the PS3. This game amazed me. I just loved the combat overall.

Excellent Review. Golden Axe and River City Ransom are my alltime favorite Beat Em Ups, I love beat em ups, but those are the two that I revisit time and again. Btw the new collection will have all 3 Genesis games, including Golden Axe 3 which was not previously released in the US until the Wii Virtual Console.

I fucking LOVED this game. I had an SNES while my friend had the Sega and it felt like a whole different thing when I played it with him. Overall one of my favorite games ever.

This game is always forgotten when it comes to the "beat em up games of the 90's" debate. Its always Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Battletoads and even the TMNT games. For those that forgot or never got a chance to play, this is a solid title.

+TheDalinkwent Crime Fighters, Vendetta, Golden Axe, and Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder are some of the best beat em ups there are.

I always liked golden axe more than streets of rage.. Though i prefer the setting and graphics in SOR i always thought golden axe was mechanically the better game and obviously you get to burn people with monsters and cut them in half.

Luke Payne Well, we can both agree the game is one of the best beat em ups ever made. I still think Streets of Rage Remake, Double Dragon Advance, Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder, and the 1989 TMNT arcade are better.

16bit Genesis music goodness. Very dramatic and heroic sounding :) I'm getting that Genesis collection for the PS3 sometime in the afternoon (after sleep). I have a Genesis hooked up to my tv as well, but my Shining Force (one) battery is dead and my Shining Force II is missing. So yeah it'll be cool to have those in some format again.

Absolutley fantastic game. Thank god ps and xbox smelt the coffe and released it. Looks brilliant in hd.Challenging quickly paced and a killer soundtrack. An allround gem of a game

great game. iv owned it on 4 different consoles. first the atari st then the megadrive then ps2 and ps3 collections. it never gets old for me. its still challenging but every time i complete it even now i still get that satisfaction that new games without a challenge seem to lack

Last time I was at Hershey Park (ten years ago or more), I had a pretty good run through of this game. Only used four quarters! When I was a little kid, I probably spent ten bucks on it one time and didn't beat it. It was certainly a pretty difficult beat-em-up, presumably to get more quarters out of people playing it.

I still have my genesis and my golden axe in my attic.. every now and then my kids and I go to the attic for some good old school video game playing. genesis and nintendo.

My preferred warrior is Gilius for his axe. It defeats bigger enemies more efficiently.

I have all three Golden Axe games on PS2 Sega Megadrive Collection. Very good game trilogy. 1st is a classic & very fun. 2nd is my personal favorite. 3rd isn't bad, but pretty tough. These games has aged really well. Even today they are fun games to play.

Aaahhh... Golden Axe. One of my childhood favorites. I did play Golden Axe 1 & 2 alot back in the past. Every time I played these two games, I had so much fun. Playing with friends was awesome. We have beated Golden Axe 1/2 many times. Later I got the Sega Megadrive Collection for PS2, which had Golden Axe 3. This game wasn't as great as the two previous ones, but still very entertaining. I also got the Golden Axe Remake in Sega Ages Collection. I really liked the remake. Who is my favorite character in Golden Axe series: Tyris Flare. I love strong women in video games.

Playing this game with a friend. Rapidly press the d pad so you can get to the dwarf first. That's how it always was in my house.

Gilius Thunderhead was the best character in the game followed by axe battler and tyris flare imo, goldenaxe was the first game where you got to play as a badass axe wielding dwarf & he still looks the coolest out of all of them.

The reviewer forgot about the Jump+Attack "Reverse Attack" move that instantly knocked down opponents and inflicted the most damage.

the two best things about this game is the Dwarf with the axe ( i was him my big bro was the blue guy ) and the way the music stops so the death sound can play

Golden Axe rocks! I remember shoveling driveways on the day this was released to pay for it. As soon as I hit $70.00 in profits I ran to my nearest Toys R Us and shelled out $64+tax for this! It was worth every cent. I think this is one of the best 2 player games for the Genesis. They did an excellent job on porting this even though I do prefer the screams in the arcade version. I wonder why SEGA chose to release the crappy GAII instead of porting Revenge of Death Adder. It could have been good

I feel this game is a bit unforgiving when played by yourself, but with a partner, it's a pretty good time for a while. I had this on the PC Sega Smash Pack and a few of my friends and I loved the game. Funny how his axe was silver in all of the home releases ;) The main thing that I didn't like about this game is the bosses and mini-bosses, sometimes they just do way too much damage, and it's difficult to get up when they gang you. It's still a very fun game though, even today.

i loved this game in school ooops showing of my age lol ..i spent all my pocket money on it the summer it came out trying to clock it...i played it again on my psp and was surprised how easy it was 20 years on...i guess endless years of playing video games has made me in to a pro gamer lol

@EmperorDinobot To dash/run you need to push the control pad (left or right) twice. eg: left left (hold) = run left left (hold) + jump and then attack = Death Stab left left (hold) + jump = jump higher than normal jump left left (hold) + attack = barge

@JackSparrow424 Bought this game along with my Genesis in the summer of '89. MAN!! I remember the look on my cousin's face when we popped this sucker in and started playing. I think we blew 8 hours just playing this game over and over......despite beating it in about 40 minutes :) It was a sign of great things to come, though.

I always went the female warrior. I was a fan of buylding up my magic. I remember getting as far as when you went up against a silver or gold Knight in the really dark area with the botttomless pit you could knock him into. I did eventually make it to the final boss a few times. But it was far too difficult for me! Yet i did only play in Single Player. Though as the games went on... the gradually got worse imo. The first game remains my favourite!

This is an awesome game. I played this with my sister countless times, and i still do. She always picks the fire lady and i always played as lightning dwarf. I picked the bomb man in blue before which was a mistake because he sucked. But this game is awesome and i even made it to the final lvl ( and loss)

This game was included on a disc when I got my Sega CD. But, you couldn't play with two players.

@Wazupupmydog As far as I can remember there is a practice mode(don't know if it is really called so) which is significantly shorter than the harder difficulty levels. But in total the story part of the game isn't that long. But there is another mode where you fight with a single life against as many enemies as you can. This gave me a lot of replay value as a kid back in the 90s.
