Classic Game Room reviews STEEL EMPIRE for Sega Genesis from Flying Edge, Acclaim and Hot B, a 1992 side scrolling shoot 'em up with a blimp! Steel Empire is called Empire of Steel for the Sega Mega Drive and CGR has both versions! Blow up bad guys with a blimp or an airplane while rocking out to some Strider-inspired 16 bit tunes, Both vehicles shoot forwards and backwards to destroy enemies all over the screen. Drop the lightning bomb and watch out for tricky boss battles, Steel Empire (or Empire of Steel) is a solid, 2D side scrolling shooter or SHMUP for the Sega Genesis / Sega Megadrive!! Steel Empire features awesome cartridge and packaging artwork from artist, Marc Ericksen, who signed my copy (hooray!). He also did packaging work for Steel Talons, G-Loc, Ikari III, P.O.W., Xybots, Atari 7800 Galaga, Thunder Force II and Herzog Zwei! CGR Steel Empire video review has Sega Genesis Steel Empire gameplay and Empire of Steel Mega Drive game play in HD awesome-town.

This game has so much swag. From the atmosphere to the soundtrack, a true masterpiece. I can still feel my heart palpating from my cousin and I turning the bass all the way up during the boss battles to fully feel the kick.

My dad friend gave me a free sega genesis with a bunch of games, Steel empire, thunderforce and hellfire were the 3 shmups I own with it and they were awesome. It got me into the shoot em up genre along with contra and other shooters as well. Thank you dad!

We had a NES, so I missed out on most of the Sega games. This one seems like a lot of fun, and those layered cloudeffects look surprisingly sweet even now. Love it.

One of the best horizontal scrollers on the the Gen in my personal experience. Great shooter, recommend playing it on at least Normal difficulty though, I think easy mode slows down more...for it to be easier lol. Awesome game.

I just got Steel Empire, highly impressed. It's coming up on the anniversary of the fall of the R1-01, ya know, one of the most ambitious and disastrous dirigible crashes... The blimp on this games is Z-01...coincidence??

I love this game, I have loved it as long as I've been a sega fanboy. Dad picked up this and ghouls 'n ghosts the same day he bought a mega drive. I was 8, so I hated the difficulty of ghouls 'n ghosts, but loved the feeling of mastery Empire of Steel gave me.

to be honest, both consoles have their merits- i prefer the SNES's sounds but the megadrive just has that quality and that nostalgia that i don't get from the super nintendo.

I missed out on this game back in the days even though the screen shots looked very interesting, because by that time, I had learned to stay away from any Acclaim/Flying Edge/Arena games. Didn't realize that they just published this Japanese shmup gem. Picked it up recently and really enjoyed it.

Nope. Looking at GameFaqs, the box clearly shows that it's called "Steel Empire". In wikipedia, it states the original japanese name "Koutetsu Teikoku" and it says it was inspired by Castle in the Sky but was not supposed to be an adaption as there is a blurb from the creator of the game who explains the inspirations that he drew from to make this game.

just so everyone knows, in the American and European versions of this game that came from Japan which had the original title of ''Laputa castle in the sky'' , so as you can see this is a game adaptation of this Hayao Miyazaki movie. The title changed because at the time no one knew miyazaki in the west. It's a very good film and I highly recommend it!

This is VERY different from Steel Empire for the Atari ST/Amiga/DOS. That was a mix of strategy-wargame and action game with giant robots (think of Total War only with more active participation of the battle). Strange that they use the same title.
