Classic Game Room HD reviews THE DARK SPIRE for the Nintendo DS. This handheld RPG for the Nintendo DS harks back to the days of monochromatic computer monitors, old school 286 computers and clicky keyboards. The Dark Spire is one of the best new games to come out for Nintendo DS, developed by Success and published by Atlus. This CGRHD review of The Dark Spire has gameplay footage from The Dark Spire on Nintendo DS being played in High Definition. Watch game play of this old school style role playing game where you create characters with stats that you get by random number generation. Name your characters, create a party and equip them with swords, axes and bows and arrows. Learn magic, take potions and don't forget the antidote. It's awesome retro RPG style with Dark Spire where you dungeon crawl and fight trolls, scoundrels and giant mushrooms. I love this game. Even the cool 80's style isn't old enough for you it also has a late 70's vector graphics style which really forces you to use your imagination. For those tired of anime-style RPG video games or overly elaborate and complicated MMOs, check out this simple, lengthy, instant classic for Nintendo DS. The Dark Spire packs hours and weeks of gameplay with humorous writing, awesome enemies and years of time consuming character upgrading, spell learning and dungeon mastering. The Dark Spire is a winner for new and retro gamers alike. It comes with outstanding music and even an audio CD to play in your car when dungeon crawling in your car. Classic Game Room HD reviews Nintendo DS games as a Nintendo DS reviewer reviewing Nintendo DS games like The Dark Spire!

Wow, this game looks awesome, it combines so many things a dungeon Crawler loves in a game. 1. Old (80's) and Very old (70's) school pixelated graphics. 2. Almost a Roguelike difficulty and appropiate lenght, atmosphere and depth. 3. Turn based action, which allow us take our time considering the risks of our actions. 4. 8'bit-ish music to accompany your mysterious and perilous quest. 5. Give us the chance to use our IMAGINATION!... Not many video game from this century can boast about such an accomplishment. ATLUS has made it possible again, publishing obscure (and wonderful) games. From this old looking Dungeon Crawl to a modern looking Dungeoncrawl/Roguelike/RPG trilogy jewels Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II. No wonder it reaches over a $100.00 on ebay

Thanks for bringing this to my attention - it hasn't been released here in the UK. Armake commented on one of your videos so I found it! I have no problem with JRPGs or other games of that nature but this does look like something worth importing! There's been quite a nice trend of doing some good throwbacks in gaming recently.

Definitely the music is one of the top aspects of this game. Also, the story is not as lacking as it seems at first. It leaves a lot to the player's imagination, but there is enough of it to leave you wondering what will be next and how so and so event will connect with each other in the end (I especially liked the events at the 5th Floor). In the end, I was left wanting more from this game, but in a good way. I'm considering replaying it with a different party setup.

Dungeon crawling in your car! HA! I love it. :) I'm about 45 hours in and I think I can safely say that I'm hooked. The difficulty is high, but once you figure out the ropes the exploration is so rewarding. When your not playing, you constantly wonder what was down that corridor or behind the door you left unexplored because you had to go back to town to rest, resupply and save. Awesome review and thanks for promoting the game. It deserves the attention.

I now own this game, as per your recommendation. And I love it. My first character (myself in this game) is a freelancer/warrior equipped with a staff and arcane and holy spells, has short brown hair, and is wearing the classical suit with breeches and a waistcoat. My second character is a reliable "locksmith" with black hair, casual clothes, arcane spells and a dagger. My elven mage and halfling priest may seem like the typical type, but beware, they have a couple more tricks up their sleeves.

I'm totally with Mark on this one: games try too hard to be cool and dramatic now, and they're losing the friction and magic that fires the imagination. Normally I'm not big on 3D maze games like this, but this one looks special, and I want to give it a shot.

I don't know, I'd say that the art style in Dark Spire has more of an anime or manga influence to it then American comics, it does look really cool, but I'm more partial to something a bit more cartoony. I think I'd prefer Etrian Odyssey honestly, if not only because it's got the more cartoony anime style and because it's more colorful, but that's just me, I tend to have a soft spot for cute, colorful, cartoony things. Of course I'm not sure if I have the attention span for either.

If you are an old-school gamer who loved his share of Might & Magic II back in the days, please do yourself a favor and buy this game. It really doesn't get much better than this. The music is outstanding, as is the art, and being able to switch both from ultra-retro to modern-but-still-retroish at any time, is simply brilliant. Beware tho: the game is brutal, and I mean REALLY brutal, unforgiving and only for thos patient enough to level up their charakters.

I like that he's reviewing obscure games, but he's too gushingly nostalgic for his own good. We get it, it's a throw back to your childhood, but as a reviewer you have to be objective about these things. There's nothing wrong with fancy graphics or lack thereof, texts, anime stereotypes, etc. The totality of the whole game experience is what's important.

@LtCharlieNash The thing is that FF7 wasn't cliched or generic for it's time. The characters did have personalities, and you may say that Cloud's emo personality is generic, but FF7 was one of the first games to have a main character that was rude and grumpy with an emo dress style. Cloud was pretty original for it's time, and thats why everyone remembers him.

This game is killer, put so many hours into it so far, reminds me of my youth back in the late 80's early 90's playing Might and Magic, Wizardry, Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, and even somewhat dragon warrior(quest) a gold box D and D... Greatest ds game ever. Loving it! I may need to restart though as my characters aren't high enough stats for the prestige classes, and 30,000 exp is a lot to spend, but than again so is restarting.

I am still wondering how I finished this twice. It's so huge, complex and with all the details that can keep most casual gamers back (random encounters, very easy to die, getting totally lost, etc). I think I liked the style. I was searching for a new RPG with classic dungeon crawler first person style. I could have started Etrian Odyssey with the same style, but much much more beautiful graphics (although typical japanishe cute faces), which I plan in the future. But this, the style, dragged me. But wouldn't finish third time. Too much time consuming and strangely addictive despite the simple graphics and akward encounters. I like though, that more people than I'd expect like this game.

Interesting looking game. This game may be too difficult for me, but I wouldn't mind to atleast try this game out. I have created this interest on the First Person RPGs, since I saw some LPs of The Eye of The Beholder D&D games. Now I would prever more colourful style (with or without some anime) rather than more darker style. It doesn't mean that I would be againts games with dark style. I just love bright colours. I even use those in my cartoon art.

@Ziiilder my friend, there´s the fun, in surviving against all odds when all that´s left of your party is the low-level thief.then is when you know your skill and luck made the difference, not the programmer´s difficulty curve, and that (and the game depth instead of just graphic depth) is what made these games awesome.I´m 23 and I always have some freeware or abandonware dungeon crawlers like this, and believe me , there ARE harder games out there(ever played rogue?I think it´s free...)
