I'm glad you mentioned this fact. You saved me from having to educate this guy on the melotron. Too bad Mike Pinder left the Moodies, all key artists who replaced Mike were just players whereas Mike contributed to the band as a significant writer of some of their songs/hits.

Excellent review of the Mellotron and the music it influenced, Pete. It's funny, my wife and I were listening to Meddle and 'Echoes' last night, and I pointed out the keyboard part where a Mellotron was used. Have always loved the sounds of the Mellotron. I was born in '57 and will always cherish 70's music above all other decades. Noticed you left Yes 'Fragile' off the list. Heart of the Sunrise was a very mysterious and beautiful use of the Mellotron. Thanks again! Don't know why I took so long to subscribe!

I think my favorite Mellotron moment is the opening swells of Eleventh Earl of Mar from Genesis. Incredible and majestic..!! My favorite Mellotron album is Tales from Topographic Oceans, in particular sides 1, 2 and 3. Wakeman may have hated TFTO, but I swear he did his most incredible mellotron work on that album..!!

The Moody's main instrument of distinction through the early years. There's a great video of Mike Pinder talking us through the functioning parts of the mellotron on it GREAT STUFF again thanks! Genesis, and Yes, are my favorite Mellotron users. I have the iPad Mellotron app, and also have the AKAI MPC 1, with a great Mellotron emulation in it. What a great time to be into hardware synthesizers and great emulations of the old classics. Thanks for sharing this list of Mellotron users. The opening to Watcher of the Skies has got to be the best example of a mellotrons sound. It still sounds so majestic. The Moody Blues' keyboard player, Mike Pinder had a lot to do with the actual development of the mellotron. And of course In the Court of the Crimson King. You can't talk about the mellotron without talking about King Crimson. Genesis' first mellotron was bought off of King Crimson.

Brian Jones' Mellotron work on "We Love You" was very special. Almost like a percussive sound. I have several sample libraries of Mellotron sounds but none can reproduce that chunky attack sound - there was probably some vintage compression involved.

I really enjoyed this show and must admit I own and love every cd you held up to the camera and talked about...excpet for two new ones to me: "Wind" and "Wobbler"...and I need to check out those two bands right away. Yes, I'm a big prog fan and even bigger Mellotron fan ever since I bought Fragile back in '72 and never in my wildest dreams imagined I would actually own one fifteen years later (1973 M400,) which I use on all my own original song recordings. I was glad you finally mentioned the band Spring, I love that album. But I'm surprised you didn't mention Germany's SFF (Schicke, Fuhrs & Frohling) and especially the Fuhrs & Frohling solo debut album "Ammerland" and it's gorgeous Mellotron-soaked title track (quite possibly the most beautiful Mellotron song ever recorded). However, I know time is of the essence and there are way too many albums to fit into just one show. So how about part 2 maybe someday?

Even Lenny Kravitz - the old soul that he always was - used the Mellotron to great effect on some of his early songs. 🙂 As for The Moody Blues, I would say that they and King Crimson were the Mellotron kings. Although I like every single one of their early albums, and love *Every Good Boy Deserves Favour* and *Seventh Sojourn,* my all-time favorite one by The Moodies is *To Our Children's Children's Children.* I typically play it in its 40-minute entirety. 👍🏻 Incredible stuff.

Great list of great Mellotron albums! Morte Macabre was a Swedish band playing Italian film scores from the '70s. They consisted of members from Anekdoten (Nicklas Barker and Peter Nordins) and Landberk (Reine Fiske and Stefan Dimle). White Willow was a Norwegian band, but the Swedish drummer Mattias Olsson from Änglagård played in the band. Something missing on the list is the German trio Schicke Führs Fröhling and their first album Symphonic Pictures (1976). Tangerine Dream was mentioned. I particulary love their live album Encore (1977) with Edgar Froese on the twin keyboard Mellotron Mark V, and Chris Franke and Peter Baumann on Mellotron M400. Speaking of Mellotron Mark V it was also used by Anekdoten on their first two albums, Vemod and Nucleus. The Mark V was a heavy beast. I know it because I helped them to carry their Mark V up the stairs at an Anekdoten gig in 1994. Nicklas Barker later sold his Mark V and got an M400 instead.

Just hearing you talk about Genesis makes me want to listen to them all day. Really great to hear you discuss Italian prog a little bit. Such good stuff and it doesn't get a lot of recognition. Maybe you could do a Top 10 "Rock Progressivo Italiano" show sometime! Also, Wobbler are freakin' awesome!

The actual audio flaws of the Mellotron are what make it truly great and unique (as opposed to what it was conceived to be, ie a sampler). There is always something "off" and vaguely unsettling about the sound that is wonderful.

Good job, Pete! The fisrt time I saw the Moody Blues must have been 1969. The only song I'd heard by some form of the band was 'Go Now'. The tickets were $4.00. I think they had just released 'On The Theshold Of A Dream'. I was sitting there, the boys were playing and before you know it, I'm hearing violins. I'm looking around, there are only five guys on stage. Mike Pinder went on to make that box sing. I went home and somehow figured out what the melletron was. I thoroughly enjoyed that concert of course and was hooked for life. Saw them six times. Thanks for mentioning Strawbs and PFM!

My favourite keyboard!!! Back in 1993, a local seller here in Vancouver, Canada was selling a M400 for $2,000. I couldn’t afford to buy it then, but was lucky enough to play it. Apparently a member of Pearl Jam later came up from Seattle and bought it. I finally purchased a Mellotron Micro (digital version), last year. One of the happiest days of my life!!!

Celeste's debut titled "Principe di un Giorno" is perhaps the ultimate Mellotron album. Great acoustic prog with lots of saxophone, ARP 2600, and of course, the mighty M400 Mellotron, played by TWO of the band members. Pete mentioned it in one of his underground prog shows. EDIT: Pete mentioned them in this video, go listen to them they're excellent!

I agree about Planet Mellotron. I've met the guy that runs the site (Andy Thompson), who is now in the band Tytan. I've been a great aficionado of the tron since late 1970. I recommend early King Crimson, up to 1974, especially from late 1972 onwards.

Got some really great songs for my best of Mellotron playlist from this, thanks. Always loved McCartney’s use of Mellotron canned strings in “Singalong Junk.” Also “Hole in My Shoe” by Traffic and “Semi-Detached, Suburban Mr. James” by Manfred Mann, which I believe is one of the very first pop songs to use the instrument.

Thanks Pete, lots of albums I have but also lots of others to discover - thankfully most of the ones I dont have can be found on you tube, and while not always the best sonically I've found in the past its a good way to listen to something before deciding to buy. Currently listenih to some harmonium, who I'd not heard anyhtng of before, and finding it a ver nice listen. PFM Per Un Amico came after Storia Di un Minuto and was the original Italian version of Photos of Ghosts. I have to say I have a great love of most Rock Progressiv Italiano so great to see PFM, LeOrme, Il Balleto di Bronzo and Osanna mentioned and as crazymanmichael100 said below I was starting to wonder if you'd get to Barclay James Harvest - Live which is one of my all time favourites.

I got to talk with John Hawken of the Strawbs for a bit, after their show in Toronto, when the original lineup of Hero & Heroine had gotten back together to play live, and we were talking about the mellotron. He was saying how it used to act up all the time due to temperature and humidity, as you mentioned, Pete, and so many bands back then took several of them on tour, so if one was acting up, they had spares to use. These days John is using a super tricked out Mini Moog, where all the dials and controls are lit and such, and he told me he sampled all of the sounds from his mellotrons and put them into the Moog, so he could use them whenever he wanted without any problems, and the biggest benefit was that now you could play notes lasting longer than 15 seconds. Very nice guy to talk to. We had a pint together.
