Classic military lorries from companies such as AEC, Bedford, Commer, Dodge, Chevrolet, White, REO, Scammell & Diamond T to name just a few make up this 125-photo video. Jeeps of course are also included. The earliest vehicles featured here date way back to the 1910s, through the pre- and post-WW2 eras, and into the 1980s. Included are a number of trucks that, once de-mobbed, led new lives with civilian owner/operators - examples being the Morris-Commericial breakdown trucks shown here, and AEC Matadors that went on to live new lives in timber yards across the UK and beyond.
Trucks, half-tracks, scout cars, ambulances, staff cars and AFS vehicles are just some of those included - I didn't include tank photos, I stuck in the main with wheeled vehicles for this collection.
If this was of interest, please give the vid a Like and consider Subscribing to the channel (don't forget the notifications bell!). To see all the vids now on the Old Classic Car channel, many of which feature old commercial vehicles of some kind or other, please see the following page:

hi there again, i used to have a Bedford RL cargo truck in 1986, a lovely lorry to drive could open the front windows etc, needless to say double-de- clutching was the best way to change gear so 10 out of 10 for this vehicle.! ref to the AEC militant in dark green ,this was the mk3 which i remember building at AEC between 1971 and 1978. part of the cab was built at Park Royal coach builders.we sent the bottom half of the cab and they put the top half on then sent the complete unit back to us.it had a huge Burgess oil bath air cleaner behind the cab.which was part of the spec, 6 speed g/box,you had to double-de -clutch up and down the box.the vehicle type was 0870,we also made a lwb version 0880 which was left hand drive for BOAR,it had a cargo body.hope the dog is ok !

I drove one of the "jimmy" trucks in the US army, we called them duce and a hafts because they had duel wheels on the back and a single on the front . It had a non synchronized granny transmission, it was a step up from a horse drawn wagon, but not much

Hi Rick, as a boy in the 50’s I helped a milkman and we delivered to Regents Park Barracks which at that time was a REME base and most of the British army trucks in the video were parked on the parade ground by the dozens during that period, it was a young boys dream seeing them being serviced and driven, great memories ,many thanks Mike.

Thanks again

Another great video. So many Army surplus vehicles went on to be the backbone of businesses for decades. I can remember Austin 4x4 trucks delivering coal when I grew up in rural Halifax which were great for delivering to hard to reach farms(Hillbillies as we called them). I remember reading about Mr Wynn of the so named heavy haulage company buying six Diamond T’s from under the nose of a scrap merchant, probably for not much money. These went on to serve as ballast tractors for many years afterwards. There are pictures of these . It’s great to seeing all the Scammels and AEC’s,many an ex-RAF Matador serving as recovery trucks for bus companies. As someone once said, there are more Matadors in preservation than they actually made. Thanks for the Champ by the way.

Oh Rick, what a walk down memory lane. Let’s get ‘Best in Show’ out of the way, as a biker, it has to be the Indian motor cycle. I did a course on the Alvis Stalwart, and gained the first HGV Class 2 driving licence 🤗. Drove a Humber Pig and FSC Ferret in NI. Loved the Guy Ant. I loved driving the Bedford RL, hated the Bedford MK. I’ve forgotten which vehicle you were showing but next to it was a Saracen APC which I adored driving. Finally, my Santa list for many years has always included the Austin Champ, I would adore one. Possibly the camera but that was a horrible green, should be olive green.

The German Skdf 251 halftrack is actually a Czechoslovak built Tatra OT810 with a rather iffy paint job. Tatra built the Skdf 251 and 250 up till the end of the war then did a bit of a re-design to produce the OT810 until the late 60’s. A few have been acquired by re-enactors and made to look like the 251 with varying results!

Thanks for this superb video that brings back so many memories. My military connections started in the late 60s when I joined the cadets, into the 70s and regular service, finally TA in the 80s. I have driven Land Rovers, including the APs (lightweight as you said), armoured for NI, Ambulance versions. MKs and RLs. I learned to drive at the RA Driving establishment at Bovington in 1972 on RL. J3 and Bedford CF minibuses, Ford Escort and Minis all army vehicles. The difference between a MK 1 Ferret and the Mk2 is that the 1s didn't have a turret. I love the look of the old Q4s and remember seeing an old Commer during my service. We also had some 50/60s AEC but not Matadors, also Stalwarts as limber vehicles. You called them "radio" vehicles, more correctly signal bodies as many vehicles carried a radio as standard. If you see an old Rover with two little antenna boxes on the front wings we classified them as FFR, fitted for radio. Stay safe.

More Daimlers! I'll always remember the club's International event at Shrewsbury, where a couple of Mk2 Ferrets were on show. The local army cadets, who were stewarding the event, were "promoted" to guide a steady stream of children delighted to view the inside of a REAL armoured vehicle. Parents taking pics of their little ones climbing out of the front hatch. Not a single complaint of bruised shins (unlike those who used them in anger).

Great video. The Bedford you describe as a short wheelbase OY is actually an OXD (the D denotes the standard general service body). The OX is rated 30cwt, whilst the OY is a 3 tonner. The OXD is a rare beast, with only 4 known in the UK - my 1940 model is sitting on my drive as I type, awaiting replacement manifolds and some electrical gremlins sorting, but that will have to wait for warmer weather! The OX is not bad to drive once you get the hang of the crash box, but it is slow ( happiest at a maximum of around 30-35 mph), and the driving position is cramped - the seat position can't be adjusted, so its uncomfortable for anyone over about 5' 6". It is also surprisingly capable off-road for a 2 wheel drive vehicle. The Bedford QL is a different matter, Much better driving position, and great forward visibility, and happy to cruise at 40-45mph - I have had mine up to 55mph on the motorway, but it's not a pleasant experience! Also incredibly slow on hills.

The Ford truck at 7:50 is a 1&1/2 ton Ford with a Marmon-Herrington 4X4 conversion. This is the type of truck the Canadian Ford and General Motors would have prefered to produce with Military upgrades such as large section single tyres, however comma the Canadian War Department insisted on following British military specifications hence the Ford and Chevrolet Canadian Military Pattern serries. Colrnel Herrington of Marmon-Herrington freed the patent for his 4X4 system for use by Canada so this is the basis for the 4X4 CMP trucks from 8cwt to 60 cwt.

I think that military vehicles were issued with registration numbers relating to the year they were withdrawn from military service at one time rather than an age related number like they were later on.

Our local huge Gasworks had about half a dozen Bedford QL and Austin K5 ex Army fuel tankers, converted to carry and spray Nitrogen fertiliser on the farm fields around the area. This fertiliser was a by product of coal gas production. They were painted bright orange and were as loud as heck coming down the road ! Never saw them again after about 1970.

Some of these trucks are real heavyweight vehicles, as you say some probably heavy on fuel as well. I think as you said the registration numbers may not be true with regard to the year, often appeared to have random numbers as military vehicles. Nice collection and thank you for sharing. 👍

Great stuff! Those land rover ford powered ambulances are known as 101s due to the chassis length (my mates got one and he always refers to it as the 101 as opposed to his other more conventional land rovers )

It's DVLA using up un-issued old registrations whenever an age-related (ie in-period) registration is needed for an old vehicle that, for whatever reason, isn't currently registered with them. Thanks for watching
