My dad was a lumber jack, Montana, big trees. Died at 89 last year. He was a big fan of Mini and watching Dave !!! He used to say to me ," Put on that man who builds the engines, than you can leave...lol" Like I wasn't needed but he was being cheeky. Every time I watch an episode I remember my dad.👍👍👍😭

Don't know what plans you have for this engine but myself I would of but a central oil pickup pipe in it as you can tell and release the fondness and memorys that engine brings back great job

One of the best darn designs BMC ever came up with. (Just the roller bearing placement alone is winner enough. An E Jag has about 276 of the bleeding things that you have to hold in with grease alone to assemble correctly) Very nice and clean build!

Worlds most complicated oil pan? Ferrari? BMW? McLaren? Nope... It's a 60's Mini - it has a transaxle in it! Amazing!

Now rebuilding a trashed Suzuki GS500f Motorcycle, its now about 80% done, put the wiring harness in it this evening but not finished with that yet, ran out of daylight, going back at it tomorrow evening when i get home from work, youre doing a great job with the engine and gearbox.

The Brits took a slightly different path with cars, but some of their engineering is amazing - compact country, compact cars - in Australia we got both Brit and American technology at the same time, talk about "spoiled for choice". I knew bloke who had a Cooper S parked alongside a V8 Mustang, he couldn't say he preferred one over the other, loved them equally.

That is true, but some American car drivers joked about British car reliability. My favorite joke was how Lucas electrical components had a special smoke inside of them, and if the smoke ever leaked out, that was the cause of your problem. Electrical components were less glitch prone. There were also jokes about oil leaks happening more often. It was said that once the Datsun 240Z arrived in the USA, it spelled the end of the British car sales in the USA. It may have been called the S30 Fairlady over in Australia. It was far from perfect, but had many advantages over what was sold at the time.

I passed my driving test aged 17 in an Austin Mini in 1994. I really wanted one afterwards but as a student, I couldn't afford one. Fast forward nearly 30 years and I still can't afford one as prices have gone insane!

Before you reassemble the engine onto the gearbox, set the clearance on the idler gear - there are different width shims available - else the helical gears will cause it to grind. Also set the differential pre-load - bolting up with the original width shims is almost guaranteed to leave them too loose. Center oil pickup is a worthwhile upgrade also.

American mechanics would not be used to working on such a small engine/gearbox, in the UK to buy such a vehicle in good condition $40 000GBP++, the Mini Cooper S had racing successes including 65' Bathurst, Monte Carlo rally and other rally events, a small package, yes, but light weight with good power!! When the Cooper S ( and the Mk2 Jag ) came out in the 60,s UK Police could NOT catch them the normal Police cars and had to buy Mini Cooper S and Mk2 Jags to catch the crooks! The Jag was a favorite get away car, grace, pace and space, perfect!!

This reminds me of all the Saab 99 & 900 rebuilds I had done many eons ago…. I have always admired the well engineered tight, compact engine/transmission packages they produced

My first 4-speed rebuild was exactly that.. put it in, take it out repeatedly.. I’d find random pieces and think “damnit.. gotta blow it back apart”.. once it was done, I was an expert though.. then I shredded 1 & 2 again and got a Muncie

The Mini engine is very similar to motorcycle engines in that the oil is used to lubricate the engine and gear box. With this in mind metal particles from the gear box can end up in the oil. There is a product, Magnom magnetic filter can be used to catch these particles. It sits between the filter and the filter housing. if it is fitted with the old type of filter it can be upgraded to the spin on type. There is plenty of parts available on UK MINI web sites for the conversion and the MAGNOM filter. I have a Magnom fitted to my motorcycle and it has picked up metal swarf.

That is important to know. Some cars would be built with a magnet on the drain plug, I don't know if the Mini did. Many companies have magnetic oil drain plugs, so if I ever need a new drain plug, I order one. There is also the "Filtermag" that is a curved magnet and holds itself to spin on filters.

Top gear top tip … set up the drop gear idler side clearance before you put the engine on.

@@mrennick Sounds interesting. I think the last street legal Mini was sold in the USA around 1969. However, it is legal to import cars that are 25 years old or more. Most of the focus has been getting the best turbocharged cars that Japan ever built. Having a real Mini from the 1990s might include several improvements, such as having EFI, and already being compatible with unleaded gasoline. I'm sure there are other upsides that happened over the years, but no British car was ever my passion, I don't know what else might have happened.

Great concept - poor execution - don't get me wrong, I've loved (and owned) British cars since I was in my teens (the 1970's) I've had more than 1 with this powerplant... they are not, and never were, what would be considered "reliable" cars in the US.

I'm an Airframe & Powerplant mechanic (A&PIA) this video kinda reminds me what I'm doing today. I just got done rebuilding the engine off of a P-51 Mustang The Rolls Royce Merlin and the transmission on this Mini I feel like the rear assessor's box on the Merlin where there are nothing but gears and shafts keeping in mind the timing of the engine and the gear box and the reduction gear box for the CONTRA ROTATING Props. Having a good plan is a good start assembly and disassembly and reassembly 😂😂 Darn English 😂😂

Contra rotating props on a Merlin? That's more an RR Gryphon thing, no? I'm guessing the accessory gearing on the back of either engine, especially if it's one with a two speed supercharger is quite complicated.

Bit heavy on the music soundtrack this one... especially near the end of the Rock Auto spot. Video content was tight; was surprised nothing about the semi-destroyed roller bearing.. maybe I missed it.

I miss my Mini Cooper, it was a great little car and handled like a go kart, you can throw them into corners at insane speeds, a tiny bit of lift off oversteer, stamp on the throttle and that’s it…brakes are much pretty unneeded

Did my apprenticeship with Austin Rover . Crikey I remember stripping down 1 of these a week . Then it was the Metro which was similar gearbox .

I'll add, I didn't see you checking backlash or adding any shims to the diff housing.. I'd also be tempted to upgrade the uni joints to the later model steel type. I was never a fan of the rubber joint in a potentially oily environment.

Think BMC Mini manual are fun to work on. You would hate working on the "Mini-Matic" automatic transmission (around 1965 if I remember correctly as an option then later around the 1975 with the Clubman's). The owner would have to run the engine for about 5 mins beforehand. To let the oil warm up and flow around the auto for a time. Otherwise, the auto would often be away getting fixed. Was not one of the best BMC's ideas for the Mini's back then. Note to the ones that don't know BMC stands for British Motor Corporation Limited, why many car companies like Morris and Austin made Mini's under there badge's and then later under the Layland badge.

It’s important to change the synchronizer baulk rings and the differential cross-pin for the planetary gears…both weak items in a mini especially an ‘S’. It also should have the uprated hardy-spicer inner U-joints. The rubber ones are for a lower powered non ‘S’ mini.

Applaud your efforts in deciphering the great British maxim of why use one part when twenty will do and get them all into a casing the size of a beer can, but hey, at least its all Imperial measurements, incidentally why doesn't America go metric? Your military has...

Because of all us stubborn baby boomers 😐. They tried to do a switch quite awhile ago and it didn’t work out so well, I think what they need to do is try a generational change over. Use both measurements for ten years or so and then wean us over. There’s also some costs that go with a change over, like owning two or three different rulers and tape measures, But the mistakes that were being made were the most costly. I was doing road construction during that time period and doing conversions on radius points and offsets for roadways was a big problem and very costly in terms of time wasted doing conversions while the rest of the crew waited for an answer. Companies wouldn’t bid on state jobs that required metric measurements because of the cost factor of errors (tearing roadways out and putting them where they should be) and time delays (waiting for a foreman to do a conversion for a measurement while an eight man crew stood around). They were trying to do it to fast for the people to catch on. The whole part of metrics being easier doesn’t really stand up because we had rulers and measuring tapes that were broken down to tenths of an inch and foot. If this answer wasn’t so long I’d get into centigrade and Fahrenheit! 😜

Actually, most American cars were beginning to go metric in the 70s, and by the 80s, seeing something that wasn't metric was rare.

Sometimes a piece of machinery only seems unusual because of where it is. I have to wonder how many people in western Europe would find anything weird about a MKII VW chassis with a diesel.

Question for anyone that sees it and could help. I want to save my dad's old 56 international s-130 but I can't find anywhere that will rebuild a starter for it. The original is burned up (pretty sure it got stuck engaged when the motor started and that's why he parked it years ago) everything else I can handle like the motor, carb, transmission etc. I just can't find a damn starter. Any tips on how to sort that?

Did you hagerty guys consider a limited slip for that little diff? Not that this thing makes enough power to really want to torque steer or anything but just a curiosity if someone makes anything for it

I'm sure some people do make them, it is popular to race the original Mini. Plus, limited slip is a huge help if you are accelerating out of a turn with FWD.
