CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: In 1942, with the Germans invading throughout Europe, William Wyler directed MRS. MINIVER, as a means of getting the United States into the war effort. Starring the popular team of Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon, the movie tells the story of how the war effects a family living on the outskirts of London and covers everything from the son's enlisting, to the nightly bombing , the invasion of Dunkirk, the capture of a German flier and the tragic loss of a family member. Winning the Oscar for Best Picture, as well as Best Actress for Garson and Best Supporting Actress for Teresa Wright, "Mrs. Miniver" is filled with Wyler's trademark attention to detail, pacing and the coaxing of brilliant performances from his actors. It's a prime example of the kind of high gloss melodramas of MGM in its prime and because of Wyler's direction, is still a powerful piece of propaganda today.

Oh, yes! And she did this and my favorite " Random Harvest" the same year. Ironically, James Hilton, who wrote "Random Harvest" but did not write the screenplay, won the Oscar that year for "Mrs Miniver." Whern I was doing a show at The Barter Theatre in Virginia, where he lived and is buried, I got to hold his Oscar, which is on display in the lobby. Thanks for watching! Steve

I watched this one recently and Greer Garson was at her most beautiful in this film and the movie, itself, ranks up there with "The Best Years of Our Lives" which has become another favorite of mine. Myrna Loy was so lovely in that one.

Greer was pretty private. Howvere , she caused a bit of a scaandal by marrying Richard Ney, the young actor who was years younger and played her son "Vin". Oops. It's the old double standard. It's perfectly alright for an older man to marry a younger woman, but God forbid the reverse happens. The marrigae didn't last long, howvere. And eventually she married Texas cattle man Buddy Fogelson and lived on a ranch in the lap of luxury.

Again, great review, Steve. I've never understood the people who hate this movie as "propaganda."Well, in a way itwas, but it's also true there were a lot of Britsh who thought Hitler was cool. And, there were a lot of Americans who goose-stepped, too. Goebbels wasn't making movies about nice Allies!

I think the dialog where Vin meets Carol (Theresa Wright) is stunning and one of the best “pre-romance” dialogues. I wrote a little skit inspired by it from a dream I had one night that was also inspired by it.

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ BTW born in Wyler was a kind of hodgepodge combination of Swiss/Alsatian/German/French = his parents were Swiss German, he was born in /Alsace when it was German, though it reverted back to France after WWI. He would have certainly have had a unique but well informed view of Germans - and because of the amalgamation of his circumstance more objective than most, I should think. Most people who would have a deep understanding of Germans would have been necessarily subjective, either German nationalist or French or Polish nationalist - none of which would not be inclined to be objective - so I appreciate what you had to say about what he had to say about Germans during the first half of the 20th century. Oddly one person who did have a well informed opinion of Germans and objective as well would have been FDR. FDR’s mother took him to live in Germany for several years (7 I think) as well as France and Italy when he was young to help him become conversant in French and German. Few people realize this. We’ll never know the extent of the value of that - but it was FDR who first insisted on unconditional surrender of Germany - he wanted to make sure that they were utterly and thoroughly defeated.

@fancycharmed I think the fact that Greer also did "Random Harvest" with Ronald Coleman the same year, probably gave her the edge. As far as I'm concerned, there were several times that Bette should have had the Oscar..."Now, Voyager", "The Letter" & :The Little Foxes" come to mind...but, that's a Bette fan for you. Ha! OXOXO

You didn’t mention that Garson was having a thing at the time with Richard Ney who played her son in the picture. I think they were later married for a short time. He went on to become a stockbroker, I think, or some such occupation. And you didn’t mention the wonderful Dame May Whitty, as regal as ever as Lady Belden. (The flower show episode of “Downton Abbey” seems to have been lifted directly out of this picture) Don’t forget the distinguished Henry Wilcoxon as the Vicar, bravely climbing up into the pulpit of the bombed-out church, and the planes flying over in formation... It’s worth a look once or twice, but I’m not sure I could sit through this saccharine thing again. There was a sequel called “The Miniver Story,” set after the war, which was very mournful and really not very good.

One of the best movies about everyday life from WW2 and it's not even about the USA. I would say Garson deserved the academy award for this role except lets not forget that Bette Davis was nominated for her best role, Charlotte Vale, in "Now Voyager" that same year. I mean come on!

Hitler declared war on the US after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 as a sign of solidarity with the Japanese Empire. If he hadn't done that, would the US have stayed out of the European conflict? Roosevelt wanted the US involved but he was up against American isolationism. Japan solved his problem for him. As it was, the US was only involved in the war from 1942 until 1945. Canada (my country) was involved from 1939 to 1945 although this country sustained no direct attack by either Germany or Japan.

I suspect you need to be American to appreciate this film which to British eyes looks thoroughly dated and inauthentic. I would swap the whole thing for the Plymouth Blitz scene in the Coward/Lean "In Which We Serve" - a much more convincing and powerful evocation of the British wartime experience. Wyler's magnificent "The Best Years of Our Lives", though, is quite another matter. Here's hoping Steve will look at that one day.

Thank you! I couldn't agree with you more. I'm American, and sorry, but I've never liked this film. Garson's bloated performance style has always put me off.The film is completely smug and simple minded. It has none of the nuance and balance of the great William Wyler's BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, nor does it come anywhere near the brilliance of Lean's output at this time.
