CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: An all-star cast shows up at Lionel Barrymore and Billie Burke's penthouse for George Cukor's comic masterpiece, "Dinner At Eight". I saw this movie when i was in high school. 10 seconds of Jean Harlow sitting in bed eating chocolates and ordering the maid around...and I was in love. It sounds SO corny...but whenever I'd get bullied in school I'd imagine myself a tough, resilient 30s dame like Harlow, and I'd muster up enough attitude to pull through. Anyway...glad you are bringing good stuff like this to a bigger audience. For many of us, they were more than just movies.

I love that too and the way Carlotta immediately sits down. takes off her shoes and begins rubbing her feet, MUCH to Billie Burke's repulsion. Perfect! Billie's character tries so hard to attain the sociol connections and status Carlotta simply takes for granted; " Didn't do too badly for a little girl from Quincy, Illionois did I , Ducky?!" I have loved this movie for over 50 years! It's so perfectly cast. The John Barrymore character is a bit wearing, but in the end, oddly moving. Dressler is the best, and one wants more of her than there is. You miss her when she's off screen.

Yes, Marie Dressler is so wonderful! Especially love when she mugs as she utters "I haven't a sou!" Her scenes were the best and there's always something to discover---like the final scene w/Harlow where she's comparing her bracelets to hers. Too funny!

The Carlotta Vance character is based on a late 19th-early 20th century actress named Maxine Elliott. Ms. Elliott retired from the stage and lived luxuriously on the Riviera collecting celebrities and titled Europeans, among whom was Sir Winston Churchill who spent long vacations at her villa. Her long-time lover had been J. Pierpont Morgan, who'd not only financed the New York City theater bearing her name, but advised her on financial decisions. Needless to say, the difference between Carlotta Vance and Maxine Elliott was their divergent economic situations. Enjoy your show...keep up the good work.

Don't know if you'll see this, Alexandra, but thank you for this bit of theatrical history. I had never heard of Maxine Elliott until I read your post. I just saw a retouched still photo of Sir Winston walking on a London street, elegant in top hat, dated 1901. This may have been around the time he was spending vacations at her villa.

"dinner at eight" is one of my favorites. years ago, while working at a newspaper in cobourg, ontario, canada, i wrote a series of articles on marie dressler; she was born in that town, and her birthplace, called dressler house, is now a museum and remains a cobourg tourist attraction to this day. watching chaplin silents, "min and bill" and "dinner at eight" was part of my research, and i fell in love with her, and with this movie. (you're right, that maid DOES look like a drag queen!! LOL)

@louisrexify I know, it was so brave of Barrymore to allow them to essentially film his own life. That phase would actually happen to him eventually. By the time he did Midnight w/ Claudette Colbert he had to read cue cards, but Mary Astor said you never could catch him at it.

@hecate55 I agree! I especially love Joan Bennett in a Film Noir called "The Reckless Moment" with James Mason, which was remade with Tilda Swinton as "The Deep End". It's one of the few re-makes of a classic that's just as good as the original and has an interesting gay angle.

I first saw this movie in about 1968 at the Los Feliz Cinema when I was twenty and I loved it. I was just discovering Classic Hollywood films, on the big screen minus commercials and cuts, newly restored and seen as they were meant to be seen. Looking at this now, I realize it was made 90 years ago. Harlow at 22 years old was starting out in life, and Dressler at about 65 was nearing the end of hers. And yet, neither of them had very much longer on this earth. Dressler would be gone a year later and Jean had only 4 more years to live. I would love to spend a "drinks with broads" evening with the two of them! Thanks for reviewing this one, Steve!

So great to see these films on the big screen where they were meant to be seen. When I forst moved to New York back in the '70's, there were at least a dozen movie theatres that specialized in classic films, eac with their own aprticular itineraries.Thanks for watching! Thanks again, Mr. Hayes, for this entertaining commentary. I love the line of BBurke, "She smells of Oklahoma!" And just as Crawford slapped every man who every appeared across from her, Harlow called every leading man, "You big apt--!" (In Wallace Beery's case she was correct😄). The thing about Jean Harlow is that I never considered her very sexy or glam but screamingly funny and very lovable. An inimitable performance when she played opposite Cary Grant in SUZY (I think that was the title). So keep up the good work, Sir. We're always ready for more from you🤩

Mine would've been Spring Byington and Verna Felton, based mainly on seeing them in "December Bride," as Lily Ruskin and Hilda Crocker. This was a much loved 1950's TV sitcom that was also my introduction to the wonderful character actor Harry Morgan who played Lily's next door neighbor, Pete Porter. Actually, they would've been more like my fantasy grandmothers, since my aunts were in their twenties and thirties. I was lucky to have two wonderful grandmothers, so I didn't need to fantasize.

Yes. But just two years earlier she was down and out and virtually broke living on the Riviera. She died shortly after "Dinner at 8", but she had wonderful happy final years.

@batjon1963 I know! The maid's name is Hilda Vaughn and she did a few other minor films. She' so laconic and underplays to Harlow brilliantly. I love how Harlow keeps calling her "stupid' and a "nit wit", until she turns the tables on her and blackmails her with that bracelet. So great!

Kudos to George Cukor who recognized that Harlow wasn't a vamp, as she had been characterized in her first movies, but a sexy comic. Nobody delivered hissy fits like Harlow, and one of her best is in Dinner at Eight. Great review from Steve.

I do too. I always intended to vsisit her grave when I went to LA. I managed to visist Hollywood Forever, which is wonderful, but never got to Forrest Lawn where Harlow's crypt is located. She was stunnning and hilarious.

Jean Harlow was a tiny little thing (5'1"). She was hidden under the dryer and another star was sitting next to her having her own hair done and was wondering who the little girl was - she was having her toenails done and her foot looked like a 12 year old. It was Jean Harlow.

Twice in the movie Carlotta says the name of her dog. Both times it sounds like name was dubbed. Anyone know the original name?

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Thanks for the reply! Hi, I found it. The dog was originally named Mussolini, and the name Tarzan was dubbed in due to the political situation in 1933.

@@falcon664 This is why I love the KZfaq comments section so much, when I learn things I didn't know. I'm surprised that as early as 1933, MGM would find Mussolini too controversial to name a dog after him in a movie. The studios were very reluctant to show anti-fascist content for fear of alienating the lucrative European markets. Okay, I just read the Wikipedia entry on "Dinner at Eight." The dog's name was changed to Tarzan precisely because they were afraid of offending Mussolini by naming a dog after him.

I have always had a problem labeling this film a comedy. Sure there are funny bits, but mostly the shadows of Lionel Barrymores tragic circumstances hang over everything. A very sad film. In a good way.
