Kind man to his machinery, build up oil pressure with fuel off and decompresser on then start.

That sounds sweeter than an 0898 number after midnight. Ps. and I'm guessing that if we could see them side by side, it's probably prettier as well. :-D

Aw well this is CHEATING LOL. I thought we were gonna see a bunch of fiddling around for 1/2hr in the rain and cold, with grease cups, priming bulbs, and hand cranking, preferably with an oily, rusty old crank

sorry to disappoint, it does sometimes have its stubborn moments but on the whole its just push the button and go

FBH can’t beat a Gardner beautiful sound solid engineering rescued a 6lw that had been submerged for 6 months in salt water after oil change and water removal fired right up

Quite! I was particularly disappointed not to see Katharine Hepburn’s petticoats being torn into strips and used to staunch an oil leak.

Would it be correct to assume that the initial use of the starter, with the compression release engaged, was to fill the oil galleries first?

Yes, its best to get a bit of oil about the engine before trying to start it.
