Should you consider buying an Aston Martin Vanquish Classic (2001-2007) or the newer model Aston Martin Vanquish II or Aston Martin Vanquish S
In this video Mike explains that the very best 2007 Classic Aston Martin Vanquish S trades for about the same money as a 2015 Aston Martin Vanquish S 8 speed.
The older car will likely put you on first name terms with you breakdown recovery man, make you get to know your independent garage very well, whilst the newer car might be much more reliable and offer similar if not just the same GT cruising experience.
The classic Vanquish is totally a decision of the heart, which the head and the wallet are advised to get ready for. But despite the slightly troublesome nature, it's just so difficult not to fall for the classic Aston Martin Vanquish!

I one a v12 vantage s 2014 and it’s lovely to drive, and the vanquish is very similar to the vantage so I think the new vanquish is great, but I’ve never driven the old one though. I do think the newer one for about 80k it’s a great deal considering the price when they rolled off the production line!

I am going all they way through my 2003 V12 Vanquish, 22,000 miles The trans, clutch and all the shifting has been rebuilt and works great. New alternator, rebuilt water pump, and a few other niggling bits. I do really want it to be trouble free for as long as possible. What normally fails across most Vanquishes, can i get ahead of this and fix a few things before they break? What would you recommend for preemptive repair. Since parts take a long time, i want to ahead and order them now, and schedule service instead of having the car down for months at a time. I want to fix it all. Please what would you recommend?

The first Aston i ever seen in the flesh was a new then 2007 vanquish s i was blown away with it and it started my love affair with Aston martin but if i was in the position to buy there would only be one choice and that would be a vanquish 2 absolute perfection in my opinion .

Hi Mike. Owned a 05 VQs for 8 yrs and enjoyed it until I traded for DBS Volante. 2 different cars for sure. Both are big framed cars. The old VQs is edgier and always has visceral presence. Annual repairs and maintenance avg'd $1500 to 2k usd to do 3k miles each yr. Quite dependable and rarely let me down to 34k miles, altho its now nearly 20 yo and little niggles were becoming more frequent. Next owner is having an enjoyable experience albeit w similar elec and tranny niggles. The later DBS and VQ are by far more comfortable esp for longer trips and are a good trade off for the edgier experience. So which to own? Reliability and maintainabilty win out. I dont wish to fear going for a spirited drive knowing that a hard to get part could leave me stranded and a sizable repair bill just ate my dinner that i was hoping to have at a Michelin restaurant. VQs and most Astons will always be undervalued compared to other exotics. Its their nature it seems. In some ways thats ok as it affords people to enter the exotic world and enjoy rare cars. So how do we keep these 3200 cars on the road when they are scattered around the world? Im wondering if Bamford Rose Virtual Service could be a possibility? Hmmmm.

Where do the “big bills” manifest themselves on classic vanquish, Mike? Is it chiefly related to the gearbox? I know you can get a works manual conversion which you’ve mentioned you aren’t a fan of, but ideal gear lever position is a measure of comfort and therefore very much a personal thing. Anything else besides the gearbox that make these cars “unreliable”?

Newer Vanquish vs classic DBS (based on DB9) would be a interesting comparison too. What’s you opinion on it ?

Interesting - I could swear Mike from BamfordRose put out a video not so long ago on how to bulletproof an original Vanquish giving a car sent over from France as an example. It now seems that bulletproofing is off the menu!

Mike when the ecu plays up on a classic vanquish what actually goes wrong with it? Regards Gary

The carbon fibre body being scratched and dented by other passes bothered me and the expense to fix it, put me off the newer model. So ordered a new emira instead.

The original Vanquish had its own identity, the Gen-2 model is nothing more than a tarted up DB9.

I've been lucky enough to own 5 AMs over the years including DB7, DB9s, Virage Volante and now a Carbon Black Vanquish Volante Gen 2. It's hardly a tarted up DB9. I can promise you that!

You’re comparing chalk & cheese Mike. Classic Vanq is last NP built car in low numbers as you say and it’s looks are unbeatable IMO. Gen 2 is a VH DB9 in drag with an overdone bodykit. I’ve owned my AMOC concours winning ex NP SDP press car for 11 years and it has 45k miles on it. Never ever had to rely on a breakdown truck in all that time. I’m a diehard enthusiast as you mention and there are far more of us than those diehard enthusiasts for the DB9 in drag! If you care about such things, it’s also the much better bet for lower depreciation over time vs the Gen 2 Vanq. Look at what has happened to DB7 Zagato values

The problem is, the new Vanquish isn't a Vanquish at all. It's a DB9 in drag!
