In such a busy, angry, technologically overwhelmed globalized society we're in today, it is pleasing to see craftsman calmly, quietly creating such fantastic (functional) art such as this. I respect the skill involved and that there are people still willing to take the time to do it properly.

I always thought genuine leather shoes like these are expensive because of the original expensive materials used, now I know it's the handmade thing that is worth every penny spent on these shoes. Might never be able to afford them, but I can truly appreciate the skill. Impressive 👏🏻

This is what you would call bespoke meaning they make a last specifically in the shape of your foot then make a shoe around the last so bespoke leather dress shoes are certainly super expensive. You can get really great quality leather dress shoes that aren’t bespoke but are made with premium veg tan calf skin leather and and a Goodyear welt which is the best welt especially for repairs and resoling in the future. You can get premium made dress shoes like that for anywhere from $400-$1000 and the best bang for your buck I have found anywhere is called Carmina which is my favorite dress shoe company because the amount of quality you get for the price is the best in the industry IMO.

My father was a shoemaker since he was about 15 years old, it was not a well paid profession in Mexico, but thanks to that I am what I am today thanks to shoemaking and to him, this video made me very nostalgic because although he made women's shoes the steps were identical and I always helped him from design to delivery, I would give anything to help him again at least once more to make a shoe with him, rest in peace dad Gilberto.

I was stationed in Japan in 1967. One day on leave I was walking though the city and stopped to watch a cobbler hand making shoes just like in this video. I was so impressed I decided to spend some of my drinking money and have a pair made even though I had trouble justifying the expense. Ashamed to admit it now because I paid less than $20 US for mine. The gentleman first made plaster casts of my feet and said they would keep my molds in the shop so I could order more pairs of shoes in the future and they would mail them to me in the states, although I never did order another pair. The shoes I had made looked almost exactly like the ones in this video and they fit like a glove. After getting out of the military I wore them for many years as I climbed the corporate ladder. Sad to say, eventually the soles finally wore out and even though the tops still looked new and instead of getting them resoled... I threw them out. I seem to remember thinking "Heck' I only paid $20 for them, not worth getting them repaired". A decision from my youth I've regretted several times since then... and especially now after watching this video [sigh].

Italy boasts congregations of shoemakers established since 1268 and a very large number of skilled craftsmen up to the present day. This young Japanese craftsman, who seems to me to be so Italian in his artisan perfection, demonstrates how this culture is finally a universal heritage. An artist as well as a craftsman. Well done.

@silenceofthelambs Silence, why didn't you keep it? I think it would have been smarter to point to an older congregation than the one established in Venice in 1268 to support your controversy. The feet have few venous branches and being in the ice for too long they risk having to be amputated. I believe that during the various ice ages that involved men, they wore footwear. Asking who did it first remains an idiot's logical exercise. The canons that the young Yosui used to make his shoes are certainly not Japanese. This does not mean that the Japanese lived in trees and had prehensile feet but simply that the modern shoes made by Yosui find their style and design outside of Japan. The first in the world to establish rules, projects and categories of shoemakers were the Venetians in Italy. I don't think this truth should be offensive to any people of any country. 70% of the world's artistic heritage is located in Italy, the nation with the highest number of artistic works or places protected by Unesco is Italy. I also believe that this truth does not offend anyone. Seeing that our cultural heritage has been well received in the world is a source of pride for us. Not only Coca Cola. I was pleased to observe Yosui working with great skill level and competence and I wanted to pay a compliment. I find your comment inappropriate and absolutely inadequate. So, please, take off those horrible sneakers that you wear even in the bed and go to buy a pair of shoes worthy of the name so that maybe you will come to understand the difference. Being a craftsman does not mean being a half artist, but a craftsman. Craftsman is a great word. Try using the hands connected to the brain and you will see that in the future you will avoid such stupid comments as the one just made. Bye Bye.

I hope they are doing well in business. They'd probably last nearly forever too if you take proper care of them. Edit: Due to rampant inflation and the resulting fluctuations in the values of currency across the world, monetary conversion rates at the moment now put the cost at around $1500-2200 USD for a custom pair.
