Classic Races - The Indy 500.
The Indianapolis 500 is an automobile race held annually at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, an enclave suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana. The event is held over Memorial Day weekend, which is typically the last weekend in May. It is contested as part of the Verizon IndyCar Series, the top level of American Championship Car racing, an open-wheel formula colloquially known as "Indy Car Racing".
The event, billed as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, is considered part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, which comprises three of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world. The official attendance is not disclosed by Speedway management, but the permanent seating capacity is upwards of 250,000, and infield patrons raise the race-day attendance to approximately 300,000.[1]
The inaugural running was won by Ray Harroun in 1911. The race celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011, and the 99th running was held in 2015. Juan Pablo Montoya is the defending champion. The most successful drivers are A. J. Foyt, Al Unser, and Rick Mears, each of whom have won the race four times. Rick Mears holds the record for most career pole positions with six. The most successful car owner is Roger Penske, owner of Team Penske, which has 16 total wins and 17 poles.

Best collection of early 500 films I've ever seen. My dad saw a race in the late '30s. I have the flier and ticket for it.

Very well produced. The music in the background shown during the various pieces of footage was a good choice, well executed.

Except for the pit stop comparison to F1 instead of IndyCar. Pffft

Did anyone notice in some parts of this video, they are going back and forth between right hand and left hand turns? I think the video got inverted.

never noticed... can you mark the time in the video for an example?

@@ILSRWY4 The first one starts at 0:56 and continues to 1:18. They are making right turns instead of left. Then another one starts at 1:32 and goes to 1:36. Another one starts at 2:31 and goes until 2:43. There might be more but those are the first 3 I noticed. If all of this is from Indianapolis, then those segments have definitely been reversed.

I think your modern pit-stop is the Ferrari team from a F1 race. While much faster than 1950 a pit-stop at Indy usually requires fuel and is not as quick as the no fuel F1 stops.

This is phoney. The footage has a bunch of races on some other track. Clockwise racing on high bank wood track is not Indy

Give credit to Dan Gurney for talking Colin Chapman into designing a car for the 500. That's where a rear engined F1 style car came from in Indy racing.

Question for physics buff ~ If they just extended that bank right up until it was actually vertical, once one got up into that area would there be no limit to how fast one could go? After all, a person would not actually be turning but rather would be steering straight, just oriented vertically.
@zlinedavid

No, because the vehicle still has to overcome resistance to the air.

Ellotus Freeholy You will probably like Mercedes-Benz test track that they used back in the 20’s-30’s and maybe into the 40’s before they closed it up. Concrete, radiused banking , very steep at the top. Very fast too. You can probably find it right here on KZfaq.

They did a trial here at Daytona International Speedway about 15 years ago with Indy cars. They only ran two of the banked turns. However the Indy cars were so much faster than anything that had ever run at Daytona that the G forces would have caused driver blackouts during a race. Indycar never came back to Daytona. The machines could take it. The drivers, being flesh and bones, couldn't. The limit of speed is human, not machine.

MUCH OF THE EARLY FOOTAGE is NOT from the Brickyard. Here, we see a lot of cars making a lot of right turns. Fact is, there are NO right turns -- NONE -- in the 500. Also, the banking is MUCH TOO MUCH for Indy.

ok this is weird. For some reason, at 32:35 they go from the 1973 failed start.....to a clip of the 1966 failed start, and then they show the '64 crash of Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald, and they use these clips to claim there were 2 failed starts in a row within the same race., (that being 1973). Then at 32:53 they say the race was started a 3rd time, and they go back to showing shots from 1973 again. They are making it sound like there were 2 horrible accidents on 2 separate starting attempts. This just isn't true. And then they are even using clips from the 1966 and '64 races in the middle of it all for what seems to be dramatic effect only. Did the director of this video think no one would notice such a blatant error? Then, to cap it all off, they give no mention of the fact that the '73 race was shortened due to rain, but rather, they imply that the entire 500 miles was run. Who in the world put this video together? I'm not talking about the one who posted it. I'm referring to the actual makers of the video. Somebody didn't do their research very well when they designed this one. Donald Davidson would be ashamed.

When checking again, we noticed that the fails were already in the footage used in this one. That's also our bad!! We're very sorry to admit we didn't do our homework for 100%., which means, we didn't double-check. Excuses to the memory of Donald Davidson.

I'm pleased to see you admit your mistake. Most would either reply in anger, or not at all. It's like a breath of fresh air to hear someone actually come out and admit their error. I don't know who you are, but you are a rare one indeed. Thank you for your honesty. I'm sure that Donald Davidson also forgives. historical error.

Great Video and its great seeing the car evolution through the years but you do have slices of other races in here outside of Indianapolis as well as the mistakes cited by other comments....Example being shots of cars running on the high banks... Indy has always had 9 degrees of banking in the turns. Another is around the 41:40 mark there is Alex Zanardi's accident which didnt happen at Indy but rather at Eurospeedway in Germany. Still fun to watch and enjoy though!

It was a good production...yet, I think the music selection was...well, different than I would expect in the various earlier decades. As one earlier, if not more viewers stated: "Did I see the cars going the opposite direction in the early years of the I.M.S. "500" races?" Yep...you did...and note also, if you haven't, that some of the footage film was, I think, of a few of the old wood board race tracks from the earlier part of last century. Over the past, I would say, 30 or 40 years, the race cars have outdone in speed, the size of the 2.5 mile oval. It would be great, but super expensive, to have a oval track twice as big [5 mile] as the old Indy Speedway. Here's my idea: 1.25 mile long straightaways; .5 mile turns banked at 15 degrees (that could be more than that for speed banking safety); .25 mile short chutes. Straightaway widths at 70'. Turns at 80'. Pit width at 50'. There's a lot more in my mind for the track configuration, but that's good enough to...at least dream on.

Tom Foster Yeah but here’s what makes no sense. Since the banking is shallow, why don’t the rules allow (vacuum) ground effects like Formula 1 ? Wouldn’t it be safer? I’ll bet today’s F1 cars could do 250 if they were allowed on the track. Downforce they have would shorten the life of tires in the turns though.
