This clip makes me chuckle now but yeah as a kid, it scared me a little bit too! Actually, I was a bit obsessed with all the Don’t Walk sketches. One thing I can honestly say, I learned as a two year old when it was safe to cross the street!

@@MonsterpieceTheatre Yeah, the sudden traffic noises did startle me a bit the first time! It kind of reminded me of the 1969 "Pink Panther" animated short "Think Before You Pink," where the Panther has similar trouble crossing a street, complete with unruly pedestrian signal!

Yep. It's nothing like in my hometown of Brockton MA when a couple years after most of the traffic lights were upgraded to LEDs, thus replacing those old worded pedestrian signals with the newer symbolic ones, someone vandalized the "don't walk" hand symbol on one of them to look like it was flipping the bird! Then the fire department fixed it a while after that (here in Brockton the fire department maintains the city's traffic lights.)

@@ZakWolf That's terrible someone messed up the crossing signals in your hometown where I'm sure if someone got caught doing that in real life could get arrested. Perhaps the main reason they got rid of the words "Don't Walk" and "Walk" because there's been news that some people who don't understand English weren't understanding what the words say and what they mean which is why they got replaced with symbols.

@@afriendofbean Yep, that is why the symbols are now the norm. We now have only one intersection left here in Brockton with worded pedestrian signals, but there are plans to redo the intersection in the future, so they're obviously going to be replaced with new countdown pedestrian signals or something.

@@ZakWolf If they still have it worded as "Don't Walk" and "Walk" for your hometown, hopefully they will change it to symbols for the sake of people who don't understand English. For example, I'm American living in the United States and if I was taking a vacation to a foreign country like China, Japan, Korea, India, etc. and if the crossing signals were worded in a different language, I would be confused whether it means to walk or not walk where I guess I would have no choice but to cross a street in a crowded group and following whatever the people do but I think symbols would be better than words.

@@afriendofbean Oh, I'm sure they will redo the intersection soon and replace those old worded pedestrian signals. Most of the others worded pedestrian signals here in Brockton got replaced with symbolic ones in fall 2003 during a citywide LED traffic light upgrade.

@BuddyBoy600alt That's right. Back in the 80s and 90s they had those pedestrian crossing signals saying "Don't Walk" and "Walk" replaced by a red hand and a green pedestrian. The red hand not flashing would mean "Don't Cross" and the red hand flashing would also mean "Don't Cross" but would mean if you were in the middle of crossing and it flashed to finish crossing and the green pedestrian would mean to start crossing but watch for turning vehicles. Perhaps the voice box to announce that it's safe to cross is for blind people whether they have a walking cane and/or a guide dog.

Yep, I remember one of the intersections in my hometown of Brockton MA having alarm bells ringing when "WALK" was on. But now it makes an electronic "cuckoo" type sound during the walk signal, which is now the white body symbol. Also in Brockton we have the countdown pedestrian signals at certain busy and/or dangerous intersections.

The pedestrian crossings in my hometown, Post Falls, Idaho, has those electronic voice boxes. "Spokane Street. Walk sign is on to cross. Spokane Street."

@@riley1049 Yep, those are integrated into those fancy accessible pedestrian pushbuttons that vibrate and make sounds for the visually impaired. We have them at some intersections in Brockton MA, and they also have TONS of them in major cities like Boston and New York. Sometimes instead of a voice message when the walk signal is on, they make this ticking noise.
