There's something wrong with the audio. I keep hearing finegold saying he's getting married. According to his own advice, "never make the same mistake twice." He's instead going for the triple crown.

I like the old games. They were not playing perfectly back then but those games offer some great attacking ideas and sacrifices. For somebody of my level that's something I can relate more to then the super high level games nowadays. Great lecture!

True story. I watched one Ben Finegold video for the chess, now I watch the rest for the comedy. Too bad only chess enthusiasts would understand some comedy, so we won't probably see a full comedy tour anytime soon. But with his stature, Ben Finegold would stand out physically in the comedy scene like for example Gallagher did.

Was 6. ... d5 a losing move ultimately then? Because at 9. ... Be7 there is a double move by the bishop, loss of a tempo and either loose pieces or a king in the center that is where the exchange combination and winning position begin. I remember reading in Maurice Ashley's analysis of the game and wondering "what did Von Bardeleben do wrong", I am thinking it might have been that, plus remarkably accurate play from Steinitz. (7:05) Maurice Ashley mentioned Rad1, I can't remember it or even fully got it, but remember he seemed to think that was a pretty good move and maybe better. [Typed at 5:54 I hop I am remembering correctly.]

Allegedly he (von Bardeleben) left to prevent the crowd from applauding, but not because of the reasons you might think. As there where still other games being played, a loud applause would have been an annoyance to the other participants, and so he wanted to prevent this from happening. At least that’s what my boy agadmator claimed after some research

Marshall got crushed by Lasker in 1907. I'm sure Capa would have punched his ticket, but he was probably too old to get a sponsor by then.

Marshall and Capablanca played against eachother in a series of matches for the US title. Capa won but in the end Marshall still became US champion because Capa was Cuban. To be fair, Marshall did vouch for him to get into the 1911 San Sebastian tournament, despite Capa not having the required wins.

I can't say for certain but in the ultimate blitz challenge 2016 in St Louis Nakamura saw Garry Kasparov pick up a piece, put it down again then look at the arbiter, look at Nakamura and then made an entirely different move. Nakamura didn't say anything but sort of let it go because I mean he's Garry Kasparov right? But a week earlier, Nakamura had used both hands to castle (against FIDE rules but allowed in USCF chess), and he had touched his rook first while castling. His opponent called the arbiter and the arbiter allowed Nakamura to castle anyway. The correct ruling should have been to force Nakamura to move his rook. So in once instance Nakamura played a completely illegal move and eventually won the game and in another instance, Nakamura allowed Garry Kasparov to cheat. I can't say why Ben Finegold said Nakamura should get the Hikaru good sportsmanship award, I swear most of his jokes just fly above my head like machine gun bullets. So, yeah I don't know. But if I had to guess it would be one of those. I can't even tell if Ben is being sarcastic (for getting away with touching the rook) or genuine (for letting Kasparov take a move back).

I would say I'm surprised but the chess world is filled with some very suspicious characters. In the final round of the 2016 US Open on August 7, after conducting a ridiculous attack against my opponent's king, he hung his a8 rook on the next move, and instead of resigning, we just sat there and he let his time run out. Not resigning is fine, I'm not offended by that (although a lot of snot-nosed shitheads in the chess world are, reinforcing my point about very suspicious characters). It was just very insulting for us to sit there for the remainder of the really long time control as we stared at a really really lost position so that he could lose on time, like we do on chess.com. It was all good in the end, because that game won me the 1st place class prize of $1200. But yeah, that's kid's behavior was very suspicious anyway.

Yeah. It's unfortunate but chess is at heart an anti-social game. If you are into multi player games like bridge or even trading card games, the players generally have to be nice to each other or you just get blocked and nobody will play with you. Chess you can be as evil as you like, as long as it within the rules you can do it. I find that the higher rated players, masters and above tend to be nicer. The reason being once you get to master you realize just how much you suck just how bad you are at chess and how many people are so much better than you. When you are a bad club player you think, "Oh they got lucky because I dropped a rook, so lucky, I was going to beat them" stuff like that and aren't smart enough to even understand just how bad they are and what is more, how unlikely it is that they will ever get better. It is only when you get to be a master that you really understand how much stronger a grandmaster really is than a club player.
