When I was a kid I used to work in a German Auto shop as an apprentice. We rebuilt so many Bug engines that I could pull an engine in 6 minutes. I was proud of that at the time. Now it takes me 6 minutes just to get my car jacked up.

I got stuck working on them in 1972 when the local foreign car guy moved , After a dozen or so My partner and I got it down to just over 4 min. to pull ,We did have a hoist which eliminated jacking .

Do you have a dual port engine? If so, you have to get it from under the car right by the tranny clutch arm. it can be a tough spot.

For those without a lift, put a long 2x4 on your jack before you put it under the engine. Once you lower it to down, use the 2x4 to lever the engine up so you can remove the jack from under it. Remove one rear tire, and slide the engine out from the side (unless you have a show engine and don't want to scratch the heat exchangers).

This is because they were designed to last and maintain by yourself. Also designed so that they are extremely easy to work on. I can't think of one car like that, that is being manufactured today

Very true. Today's cars are built for planned obsolescence. manufacturers nowadays love it when your car breaks down so you have to take it back to the dealership to have it serviced. some cars even have ecu's that are locked only that the manufacturer itself can operate and fix the problem so that way backyard mechanics can't do it themselves, they want their money. So sad.

I occurred this very same problem. You have to remove the bolt attached to this round "boss/nut" from underneath the car. I removed the exhaust (driver's side) and the driver's side wheel/tire to gain easier access. Just a little PITA to gain access but once its off it's just as described.

I have a '73 Bug with a '74 "California" 1600 engine in it. Getting the engine out wasn't too hard. I did it myself. But after rebuilding it, trying to put it back in was a son of a gun. I had my stepson and son-in-law helping me and we could NOT get it back in. I ended up taking off the muffler assembly and then when I tried the engine went right in, smooth as silk. But from all the videos I've watched, I've never seen someone have to remove the muffler. :(

Hello. I just bought a 1965 VW Bug out of Missisppi from the original owner. The car is actually really solid, but has several issuse. The engine has been switched from a 40HP to a 70Hp and someone attempted to convert the car from 6V to 12V. I'm fixing the car to sell and would like to know if it will hurt the value to finish the conversion or should I put it back original? Also, is it worth the expense to find an original 1965 engine, or just use the one I have? Any help will be useful.

Hey Chris, why does my bug have fuel in the oil pan
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 8 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, gas in the oil, not good, you need to drop that oil. I see this happen when I get deliveries of a beetle that is shipped in on a big truck, they put the bug on too much of an angle upward for too long, the fuel then passes the needle and seat in the carb and then into the oil. Or maybe your needle and seat is defective. Take top of the carb off and take a peek at it.
