Music Matters

Күн бұрын

Classical melody writing tricks and music composition techniques. We begin with an exploration of how melody notes must either belong to the harmony or be identified as inessential notes. We then move on to consider how conjunct and disjunct movement can be balanced to add impact to a melody and explain how to organise harmonic rhythm in such a way as to add pace and direction to a melody while using it to avoid predictability. Finally, we reflect on how to add rhythmic character to a melody. These four classical melody writing tricks will transform your melody writing and music compositions.

A friend of mine and me had this kind of contest where we gave eachother a beginning of a piece and we had to continue it and I think thats a good way to practice, because you see what the other person made from your two bars for example and you also have the chance to have some feedback. I really like this type of video. 😊👍

Wonderful, some deceptively advanced concepts, but handled very simply and clearly. One thing I do is I often subconsciously insist that phrases end on the first beat of a bar. In your example the phrase ends on the third beat.

I don't know if anyone will reply to this, but he talked about notes being justified played on top of the chord being essential notes or inessential notes, is this not all notes? I'm kinda confused. Can anyone clarify the relationship or what exactly are inessential notes? Couldn't get a good answer from Google lol
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 3 жыл бұрын
Essential notes are notes that belong to the chord sounding at the time. Inessential notes are notes that are slipped between essential notes that do not belong to the chord.

About rhythmic character, Bach has quite a few pieces that are written mostly in 16th notes, but they are felt in different groupings throughout the piece, making you feel a rhythm that isn't written
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 3 жыл бұрын
That’s true. Bach uses 16th notes quite a lot in 6/16 9/16 12/16. The groupings normally accord with those compound time signatures but there’s often plenty of syncopation/ rhythmic displacement.
@tedbrownlow4617
@tedbrownlow4617 10 ай бұрын
Are you talking about a rhythm accented by leaps / turns? Aka C B A C B A C B would be a 3+3+2 rhythm
@MusicMattersGB
@MusicMattersGB 10 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. Really it’s more about how beats relate to rhythms eg in 6/16 there are 6 semiquavers per bar arranged as two groups of three, with each group of three generating a dotted quaver beat.

Is it possible to write a melody using one or two of the extension notes of the chord on the strong beats? Say, using an F# note on a Gmajor7 chord. Or, an A or E? Would they need to be in a higher pitch to behave as extensions which harmonize with the the chord tones rather than lower notes behaving as inessential notes? Or, when I write or see any extended chord, should I always simply boil it down to it’s basic triad to write a melody and work with it such as how you’ve shown us? Thanks!

That’s fine re chord extensions. Extended notes could be used at the top in the middle or at the bottom.

@@MusicMattersGB Ok, makes sense. Nice to think about! Though there's plenty of goodness to explore in the triads!

I just composed a song, but the melodies of each part of the song are not very connected, it sounds like different songs, what should I do now?

It sounds as if you need more cohesion between the sections - take ingredients of melody/ rhythm/ harmony from one section to use in the next. See our Creative song writing course at www.mmcourses.co.uk

Is writing human vocal melody a bit different than writing melody to instrument?

You have to bear in mind vocal ranges and how to allocate words. Otherwise much is the same. Much more at www.mmcourses.co.uk including details of our online courses and of our exciting Maestros programme.

I'm struggling with conjunct and disjunct melodic balance when using arpeggios. An arpeggio mostly stacks notes in thirds, but this will be in skips, not steps. You say balance conjunct and disjunct melodic notes, but does that mean do not have a series of arpeggios one after the other? I've seen many tubes and websites state that arpeggios are very melodic but this is in contrast with stepwise motion. Confusing

Arpeggios are good but balance them with scale movement and it works really well.

@@MusicMattersGB Thanks. I do have a tendency to try and squash as many notes as possible with sweep picking arpeggios, but I should really be more selective about speed bursts. Will definitely try to mix with other devices.
