As an educator I have been searching for years for a video that was informative, historically accurate and presented in a way that my high school music appreciation kids would accept. Thanks for putting these together. They are fantastic. You have been my life line as I am putting together my lesson plans on music history.

My older brother player classical music on the piano when I was a kid. So, luckily, I did get to hear pieces from Schubert, Mozart and several others.

Omg, I'm so thankful for this channel! I'm taking music appreciation and it's been difficult recognizing and articulating musical elements. I'm actually praying for a "C" in this class.

I always thought that Schubert was a romantic period composer. At least that`s what I was taught at school....

You are missing the point about what is a classical sonata; there is not a standard form beyond the basic high level ternary structure, though there are some statistically recurring patterns. Though Beethoven language is darker in late years, in terms of structure and tonal language, it is in his last compositions that he is the closest to the classical fundamentals. And for Schubert, he is not really a classical composer but more a post-classical. His tonal language and style already departs from the classical one; even if he tried to stay within the concept of beethoven sonata form, most of his production does not create the same consistency because he is already not using the same tonal concepts (which are more obvious in his lieders). Schubert moved across different options during his life and in his very last compositions tried to scholarly come back to the classical style of Beethoven. But even if composers continued to compose sonatas like Beethoven, this form was already a dead form by 1830 simply because the tonal/harmonic and melodic language evolution had become incompatible with the key concepts which made the sonata form work well in the classic style; some scholarly imitated it with generally less success and some others like Schumann introduced innovations whithout being really able to revive the form.
