A classically trained anipianist reviews and analyzes Animenz's Unravel.
Or the Animenz fanboy is back to fanboying over Animenz for another 20 minutes.
Animenz's Unravel has become the gold standard in the anime pianist's repertoire. There are more Unravel covers than I can count, and often times how good a pianist is is judged off their attempt of this insane work. Animenz himself considers this his most "punishing arrangement", and Theishter has made a strongly worded video discouraging beginners and even intermediate pianists from learning this piece.
But what goes into Animenz's own performance of this? Why is his video still one of, if not, the best covers of his arrangement out there? What are the techniques that he's using or implementing to get the musicality and the technicality that he's going for?
It's time to break down Unravel. And it's time for you and me to have our minds blown.
Also, stick around to the end of the video because I have a bit of an announcement!
*My screen capture software for some reason didn't record the video audio as well as I wanted, which is why you'll hear Animenz stutter a tiny bit every once in a while. Sorry about that!
*Note: I talk a bit about relaxation in the softer parts. By relaxation I mean a release of tension in the forearms by applying less weight in the softer parts to regain stamina for the louder ones. Obviously the hands and tempo are still going at the original tempo.

His mistake was about that specific arrangement of his was such that he didn't though about consequenses in advance. He poured his soul trying to make arrangement as close and as good as possible no matter what technical difficulties it have (he wanted to challenge himself with that one). But he didn't expected that this one arrangement of his will become a quite literally an icon of whole piano anime covers, and MANY people will ask him to play that one particular arrangement every single time he gives concert of some choise). But that cover is so technically difficult, that it lands hard restriction on Animenz itself, and made him constantly practice that cover to be even play that as fan asked. And it takes a plenty of time and resources. Not to say there are parts when even with a lot of practice, consistency with which he can play parts of it is far from perfect, so he always have a risk of messing up. That's why he wrote easier arrangement (sounds less in my taste compared to this iconic one), just to have easier time with fans

@@ykcnn very much so. If not more. From the words of TheIshter in his rant video about pianists playing this piece: the less time playing piano compared to the technical skill required results in increased chance of injury. He's not a hater either. Both him and Animenz are good friends and even toured together a few times If you do not pace yourself or have not had enough experience playing the piano then you can put yourself at risk of Carpal Tunnel syndrome or Repetitive strain injury if what your playing is too difficult. 3 months isnt enough for this piece. 6 isnt either. A year isnt enough. 3 years isnt enough. 6 years probably not a good idea either. Animenz has been playing since he was very young. Age of 5 if I recall. He's in his mid to late 20s I believe. I'd say this could be harder than some classical pieces by renowned composers in history like Liszt or Rachmaninoff. It is easily one of the most technically demanding arrangements ever made.

@@DiscreetHobo I think that the best way to assess the ability to SAFELY attempt learning an arrangement like this would be to see if an individual is able to playing through Rachmaninoff's second prelude on the Op. 23 set, and the first, fifth, and thirteenth preludes from the Op. 32 set. Those four preludes contain the exact technical aspects incorporated into this arrangement of "Unravel".

I recently tuned my piano for the first time and asked my tuner if he could teach me the basics while he tuned which he did. According to him the sound you get when you hold the pedal for too long is due to the frequency of the the strings resonating with different stuff in the piano as everything has a frequency where it will emmit a sound. Like if you hold the middle C which is about 440hz for too long its frequency will change over time which will resonate with other strings in the piano or even the bridge itself
@WattKeys
@WattKeys 3 жыл бұрын

While I was analyzing Animenz' right hand at 2:00 in the original video, bar 66-69, in order to get the fingering down, I noticed something VERY interesting. In bar 67, he has to accent the very first note he plays in that bar, Bb, one of the notes that helps the big chords with carrying the melody. Like you said, it's almost impossible to accent these notes with just your fingers, and you need external help, so you do that by using your body and the pedal. As I said, I was inspecting his right hand, and I noticed that one of the ways that he helps the 4th finger accent that Bb is by skipping the very last note in bar 66. That note being A, which also just happens to be the note that is played just before the accented Bb. I know this isn't just a mistake of his, as he does it TWI CE. And with a closer look, I could actually see that he doesn't even make an attempt at playing the A key. Skipping this A not only gives him the time he needs to lift up his 4th finger in order to create speed and power so he can accent the Bb, but it also makes the accented Bb sound more articulated and powerful. It's not like he just jumps straight into articulating the Bb, it's like he replaces the A with a sixteenth rest, which in turn creates a sudden stop and brief silence. This makes it even more impactful when the accented Bb crashes in and breaks this silence. It makes the Bb sound more powerful than it would have if the A was played. Now, he plays these runs four times, but he plays the same two runs and alternates between them. The first and third run has the accented note as Bb, and the second and fourth run has the accented note as C, which is followed up by a D. When he plays the second and fourth runs, he doesn't skip the A. This is because he actually needs to stretch out his 4th and 5th finger SLIGHTLY in order to reach the C and the D properly. With his already insanely fast moving fingers, hand and arm, this SLIGHT stretch gives him just enough momentum in order to accent the C, therefore, he doesn't need to skip the A. Another thing I noticed is that in all of the runs, he actually does take a slight pause to lift up and accent the top note. Most other covers don’t take the time to accent those top notes, and in turn it doesn’t sound as powerful as Animenz’ version. I can't imagine the brainpower required to make such an altercation in the piece that both makes it easier to play, but also makes it sound better. Sacrificing a note in order to articulate another is a very brave move, and the fact that he manages to pull it off so smoothly is absolutely bonkers. This further solidifies Animenz as a GODLY pianist who inspires both some to learn the piano and some to quit.

@@Nynja123TRT I’ve been playing piano for maybe 4-5 years now but I taught myself so I don’t know the full staff and all that and I want to try to play this but watching it just discourages me i feel dumb for tryna play it this early :/

@@jaydenbarber6559 It's okay! Sight reading is a skill that is developed over time :3 If you have a basic understanding of music theory, it won't take long to learn the score for this piece ^-^ A tip that I still use, even now, is to use these two acronyms: FACE - Treble clef ACEG - Bass clef So FACE is for all the spaces in the treble clef and ACEG is for the lines on the bass clef :3 Good luck, Jayden!

I’m not usually for ‘popular content’ on the internet because it’s not usually the best content that rises to the top BUT in this case it’s completely the opposite, it’s so refreshing to see someone with actual talent and skill getting recognition on the internet

I love these videos! So many great insights that I would have appreciated a few years ago lol, when Animenz dropped Unravel I was a naive 16-17 year old and spent 2 years trying to learn it, I have so many thoughts about this arrangement In a masochistic kind of way this video made me wanna give it another go! Looking forward to more analyses like this 👀

Definitely a good point at the beginning. While loud and fast sections are usually harder to play, softer and slower sections are often the harder parts to play well. Being able to play chords softly and expressively takes a lot of control.

As a person who learns by feel and not standardized methods, I can say the beauty in this is he's gone full dived in what he's doing. The end product in his arrangement music has a wow factor in pieces as much as a whole. I don't think I'll be able to match this for years to come, and it's been years since I've heard this arrangement to begin with.

At 9:33 its because it sounds like the range of the lyrics in japanese match better with the range of the instrument so naturally you hit the (correct) range with the proper vowel sound in Japanese.

. I hate to be that guy, but I would love to see you go over Animenz' "Kuusou Mesorogiwi." The way the feeling of the song changes so drastically throughout is amazing, and I have no idea how he does it. Starting with this Broadway theatrical sound to a bluesy feel, then a transition to something that sounds like classical to a modern poppy sound. Obviously I don't know the technical terms or really what he does, so hearing you break it down would be an awesome video :). also liked, subbed, and hit the bell.

What I love about animenz’s cover, and unravel in general, is that there is a stark contrast between the sad and sorrowful, and the insanity. It’s more prominent in vocals, but if you know the theme of unravel, then you know as it reaches, in this case, the part with massive arpeggios, it makes you feel like you’re falling apart, with the previous section building up panic, sadness, and rage, before exploding all at once,(again, more prominent in vocals) into something that’s consists of only anger and insanity. I don’t know if it’s because I already know the meaning behind the song, but the fact that I can still hear all the sadness, anger, and insanity is really amazing and is what sets adimenz above every piano cover
