@@frankcolumbo1232 I think Sokolov and Hamelin are two greatest pianists today (save Martha Argerich who is having a revival in the last 2-3 years playing BETTER than she did when she was young, if it's at all possible). Although I doubt Sokolov and Hamelin would agree on even one thing when it comes to music. :)

@@frankcolumbo1232 He did say rivaled. It's like saying Horowitz's technique rivalled Bolet's technique . Few can even asses these things . Those that know :know . There are many who do this work with hands,arms body now so I agree with you there are hundreds if not thousands of pianists who cannot be bettered .Again , how many make music you remember ? Sokolov is memorable in everything he plays .Hamelin too is individual many play Bolcolm's etudes few if any have his vision !

He's such a great interviewee. Very willing to put it out there and give of himself in interviews, humble but not falsely modest, positive and encouraging but not afraid to make judgment calls. Someone who has something to say and is happy to say it to help people. A thoroughly decent guy by all accounts as well as a pianist of extraordinary gifts.

It’s rare to have good questions in interviews like this. Excellent interview and she gives Hamelin all the time needed to explain himself, and contrary to most interviewers she LISTENS to the answers.

Does anyone know his piano of choice, in his home?
@Radiatoron88

In one video of a home concert that he did, we can see that the piano is a Fazioli, and unless that's changed, I guess that's what he is using at home.

@@Radiatoron88 I did expect him to know about rare and actually much better pianos since he knows so much about rare and under appreciated piano repertoire. (because Faziolis are much much better than Steinways, Bösendorfers apply too)
@Radiatoron88

@@LisztAddict Not in my "book." The great piano recordings are almost all done with pianists playing Steinways. I tried a Fazioli once in a music store in Chicago and found the tone cold and uninspiring. Pianists sometimes allude to the "clarity" of the Fazioli since its strings don't cross over other strings. But I guess for me that "wash of sound" and more "blended" sound is actually what I love. No doubt much depends on how well an individual piano is maintained/regulated/tuned/etc. The piano I tried in Chicago was no doubt not in perfect tune or regulation. I tried a Bosendorfer once and loved the midrange and bass, but I found the treble range to be a bit weak. I actually preferred the Yamaha that was next to it in the shop--it had a rich and somewhat "woody" midrange and bass like the Bosendorfer but a more brilliant treble range like the Steinway. Give me a first rate Steinway and call me a happy camper. For that matter, give me any piano and call me a happy camper! Given that I only have a "digital" piano. I would love to try a Fazioli that is in concert condition in any case. Don't suppose I'll ever run into such a piano though. It'd be a blast to give it a go though! By the way, Baldwin concert grands can be--or were in the past--superb instruments. I have a friend who has a 7-foot Baldwin that is wonderful. Incredible bass on that piano and also a feathery touch. You can hear Baldwins in the recordings of Marian McPartland, Dave Brubeck, and also William Bolcom playing Milhaud--the Saudades do Brasil. There's also a fantastic recording featuring Youri Egorov playing a program of all Fantasies--by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, and Schumann. I believe that the first three of the Fantasies were played on a Baldwin piano, though I'm not 100% sure on that. I think the Schumann might have been played on a Steinway. And, speaking of pianos, one of the most beautiful pianos I've ever had the privilege to try was a Shigeru Kawai piano in Tokyo. The tone throughout from top to bottom was gorgeous, and it also had a better touch than the usual too-heavy Kawai touch. And going back many years, I had a friend named Bradley who, of all things, went to Bradley University, and when I visited him, I sometimes played some of the pianos in the music building. They had a couple of Mason & Hamlin pianos that were a joy to play. My brother used to have a Grotrian piano that he raved about, but unfortunately I never got a chance to try it out. He was very taken with its lyrical tone. Cheers!

@@Radiatoron88 My gawd who can afford a Fazioli .He is a big name Im sure they would loan him such -then again he plays a lot and makes dee MOAn-NEEE!!!

@Radiatoron88 Жыл бұрын
@@MrInterestingthings He makes "dee MOA-NEEE," you say? I doubt any classical musicians make that much money, though there are/were exceptions, no doubt. But given that Mr. Hamelin has more than 40 albums out there, and is now also on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music, methinks he's doing just fine in the moolah department. Sure would like to have the money to be able to afford a Fazioli--even though I wouldn't buy a Fazioli, but would instead buy a little house for my wife and I to live in, and then "furnish it" with a decent upright piano. Though if anyone insisted on giving me a Steinway concert grand--and a house big enough to have room for it--I would be a grinnin' fool! RIght now I'm just a poor grinnin' fool.
