Alton Glenn Miller was an American big-band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1942, leading one of the best-known big bands. Miller's recordings include "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade", "Pennsylvania 6-5000", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "A String of Pearls", "At Last", "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo", "American Patrol", "Tuxedo Junction", "Elmer's Tune", and "Little Brown Jug". In just four years Glenn Miller scored 16 number-one records and 69 top ten hits-more than Elvis Presley (38 top 10s) and the Beatles (33 top 10s) did in their careers. While he was traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France during World War II, Miller's aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel.

I'm only 73, but "My Momma" turns 100 this month and she and Dad danced to this music lovingly for decades... I intend to play it at her Birthday celebration. Hopefully, some younger folks will appreciate what goodness we've given up in the search for equity...

I’m 67 years old and grew up in a neighborhood filled with WWII veterans who were my friends’ fathers. When there was a block party (in the early to mid 1960’s) all the Moms and Dads would bring out their big band music vinyl, and would blare it and dance to it all night long! None of us kids could believe OUR PARENTS could jitter-bug that much AT THEIR AGE!! (They were actually only in their late 30’s and early 40’s but to us, they were old Mom and Dad…..until we saw the jitterbug queens and kings!!). ❤❤❤ I still tear up whenever I think back on those memories. 😢

Politics separates us, music brings us together. It transcends all cultures. I have dozens of Glenn Miller recordings on CD, even some V-disc transfers to CD plus other Big Bands and music of WW2. Let us hope, some day, people will realize we have more in common than not.

My Mom and Dad danced to "Moonlight Serenade" at their fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration in 1990. A few years later, when I moved in to care for my Mom after Dad passed away, she and I danced to Glenn Miller every Saturday in the living room. When she was in a nursing home with dementia, which held her for at least fifteen years, we danced again to the tunes as we hummed, until she could no longer walk, or dance, or sing. What warm and wonderful memories Glenn Miller's music evokes! It will always lump my throat!

Born in '65, I came to appreciate Glenn Miller after my tenure in the U.S. Navy, and learned that my maternal grandfather played trumpet in a band back home. After suffering a combat-related spinal cord injury, I spend quite a few weeks in the Veterans Hospital throught the year, and everyone loves when I play Captain Millers music.

If you don't already know of them may I suggest the group of people (young students) in Barcelona, called the Sant Andreu Jazz band taught by Joan Chamorro. Wonderful musicians playing the old and great standards we love. I'm an old guy too 79 yrs. Sooo...born in early 1944 l am lucky to have see and heard many phases of music thru the years to today. There is not one that doesn't electrify the moment when you re-hear it . Like now for example. Very emotional.

My family reunions at my grandmother's house three or four times a year weren't complete until my dad sat at the piano, Uncle George tuned up his sax and clarinet, Uncle Bernard pulled his guitar (my guitar now :) out of its case and I plugged in my bass. Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, the Dorsey brothers, Frank, Dean, Mel and the rest of the 'Great American Songbook' were the standards we played all night and into the next morning. I didn't realize back then the musical education I received. I also didn't realize what great times they were. They still make me smile when I reminisce.

My father was born in1933 as a farmers boy in the very west of Germany, shortly after Hitler came to power. He witnessed the war front coming over his village as a twelve year old and the American soldiers bringing the children chewing gum and chocolate and peace in the end. When he was grown up he bought a vinyl LP with Glenn Miller's greatest Hits. He often listened to it when I was a child. I listened to this music for myself when I was a teenager. Now I'm a grandmom myself, my grandson's father (my youngest son) is having his 25th birthday tomorrow and has been a soldier himself. I will give the inherited Glenn Miller Vinyl LP of my late father to him as a birthday present, for I know he will love it too. This music is a "must have" and "must know" to me!

Just sitting here listening to Glenn Miller's stuff. Trying to picture my Dad who served in the Navy, stuck in Iceland working as a radio relay operator from 1942 thru 1944. Miller apparently was top in the charts. Getting a feel of my Dads life at 20 years of age or so stuck in that lonely place. Was a completely different world then from today, just 80 years later. This was what he rocked out on, the American sound track of World War Two.

My first recollection of Glenn Miller and his Orchestra was a rainy evening. I was five, sitting in front bench seat of our car, between mom and dad. Dad had the radio tuned in to a station nearby as we drove into Los Angeles. I thought that the music was beautiful. It happened to be Moonlight Serenade. Back in those days patriotism was pretty high. It was the fifties and the future was bright and hopeful. This is how I first experienced the magic of Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. Somehow that music was a part of a larger picture in those days, summing up our love of life...

Usually it has to do with the video itself, not the actual music. People might thumbs down because of the amount of ads, or because the audio quality is poor. This video doesn't seem to be any of those things, but thumbs down don't always mean a dislike of the music itself

My parents were born in 1917 and 1926. When my sisters and I were growing up in the '60s we were only interested in the Beatles, the Stones, et al. But every once in a while my mother would assert control over the stereo and play Glenn Miller and prance around the living room in full swing. We just guffaw, we thought it was old fashioned music that only old people listened to. Now I love it!

I believe you are right about the enduring quality of the Miller sound.
