Classic Game Room HD reviews ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURES for Sega Genesis from Konami (Sega Mega Drive). 2D side scrolling platformer goodness for fans of the genre, Rocket Knight Adventures has you playing as an opossum with a jetpack who fights pigs in mecha armor. Charge up your jetpack to jump and attack, swing your sword like thing and jump with precision, Rocket Knight Adventures mixes it up with creative level design and clever end bosses. This CGR review of Rocket Knight Adventures has gameplay from Rocket Knight Adventures showing game play on the Sega Genesis 16-bit game console. Konami is remaking it too so hang on to your jet pack for more adventure! From 1993 for your Megadrive, Rocket Knight Adventures!

Ah, Rocket Knight just never gets old whether SNES or Genesis - even the new one is pretty damn good. It's a rocket powered opossum with a sword... What's not to love?

I don't understand why this game's never been rereleased (Virtual Console, PSN, Genesis Collection, etc). It's so damn good! Shame the sequels don't live up to the same standards

honestly. I had a sega growing up unfortunately and it had a shit library compared to the SNES. Rocket Knight was one of the rare gleaming gems in that pile of bullshit, yet no ports?! They ported every sonic game on to one PS2 collection disk. You could easily fit every decent non-sonic Genesis game on to one PS2 disk. There are only about 10 of them!

gantzisballs the Genesis has a great library of games, you probably just had the shitty end of the bunch. Both the SNES & GENESIS had a competitive library that equalled each other.

Konami should just sell the entire gig for a whopping TON of money. Warner Brothers desperately needs something other than "Batman Mortal Kombat" and indeed Konami did their Tiny Toons game. ..though Rocket Knight feels like a Miyazaki movie blended with Disney Afternoon. Why these companies still invest in TV crap instead of buying up every video game IP in sight is baffling. It's like they're still pretending Millennials don't exist.

Good Review. One of the best games on the Genesis. Sparkster is a really underrated character, his general design and abilities in game were always very cool, as well as the fantasy-machine setting. I always thought this game would have made an awesome disney-like cartoon like Tainspin or something.

At 2:50 you asked: "Did you catch that?" as a reference to the ingame transition. When I heard the question something else came instantly to my mind. The music phrase that's being played sounds exactly like the one from a Deep Purple's song called Black Night.

Interesting how a simple video game review can spark up a whole debate/flame war over a video game system. EVERY game system has advantages/disadvantages compared to every other game system. The games, and "fun of playing them" are all that matter. I never played RKA when it was new, even though I had a Sega Genesis - I also had an SNES. This game probably would've been one that I would have played a lot at that time. Thanks for the review.

@Xinn2000 That's because the guy who originally made first rocket knight adventures and sparksters along with sparksters look in the game was the creator of contra, rocket knight adventures is essentially contra as a opossum with a rocket pack and a lot more, part platformer/ part arcade shooter and that's why the first rka was and still is incredible to this day, the sequels never captured the magic of the first one unfortunately :(.

The XBLA version is gonna be great, but 15 dollars for it is pretty hefty. Not sure why Konami just didn't try to imitate all the 800 point value packed arcade games that have been coming out lately. Especially PD. Damn, best 800 points I've ever spent.

I simply loved this game. In fact I just got it for my Genesis just a couple of weeks ago. Sadly I hated Sparkster (the sequeal) and the remake of Rocket Knight Adventures doesn't look good to me. They took away it's bright cartoony feel and added a realism to it that I think destroyed one of the things that made this game so memorable.

@gdement The difference is, the DPCM channel has built-in 1:8 compression and plays samples automatically without CPU intervention. On the Genesis, what you have is a dedicated Z80 sound CPU and a 8 bit DAC. Given how good your routine is, you could play more than 1 digital channel on it. But that would be a waste, because playing samples is not one of the Genesis strengths. You can create great sounding tunes on it if you know what you are doing. But, as I said, It is VERY EASY to screw up.

Also, I wanted to mention that the Genesis had FM Synth for it's music support. This was, in all ways, CRAZY inferior to the SNES's tracker style spc chip Whenever I hear Genesis music I think of the "Bwoww" sound in Sonic when you get the field orb thing around you. That's what FM Synth reminds me of.

@gdement Wavetable was there before the SNES. The NES can already play compressed samples using the DPCM channel. Most Konami and Sunsoft games use this channel very actively for drums and instruments.
@porcorosso81
@porcorosso81 14 жыл бұрын
@LanIost You are comparing apples with oranges. FM is a sound synthesis method where you actually can CREATE sounds from the bottom up. On the SNES, you have to store a predefined waveform in memory. Many Genesis tunes suck, because FM is VERY EASY to screw up in programming (making the instruments sound distorted). There are however games which sound really great, and show the potential of FM. Konami was one of the developers who could handle the sound chip, since they also used FM in arcade.
