Moby Dick is extremely rewarding, but you have to really dig at it to grasp the actual meaning of the book. It's much more than just the hunt for the whale. Melville had such a complex mind. Also, it is more enjoyed while studied than actually read for a lot of people. If you can tackle it then you can probably handle any book. My favorite book, but I understand if it doesn't click for you. It's an acquired taste for sure.

I love your choices! One hundred years of solitude is one of my favourite books =) "Sense and sensibility" is not at all boring in my opinion. On the contrary, minor characters get more attention than in other Jane Austen books. Pride and Prejudice remains my favourite in any case. Moby Dick was a challenge because yes, it tends to get boring sometimes, especially when the protagonist is describing every possible kind of whale. However you will be rewarded if you finish it. If you are not familiar with Melville you may want to start with something shorter like Bartleby?

Oh, I'm so excited for you reading Moby Dick (or trying to?) & Snow Country! I absolutely love Japanese fiction, if you're looking for more recommendations in that department, I'd say more by Kawabata, but also Jun'ichiro Tanizaki (The Makioka Sisters) & Yukio Mishima (Temple of the Golden Pavilion is one of my favorite novels, then there's Confessions of a Mask & Spring Snow). As for other classics, I've wanted to read The Charterhouse of Parma & The Count of Monte Christo for ages, but haven't really gotten into them - maybe I need a buddy for that hmm...

On my first attempt at reading Moby Dick I only made it about a 1/3 of the way through before giving up. I'm determined to try again one of these days. One thing that might help you get motivated to read it is a wonderful BBC radio show/podcast called In Our Time. Over the past 20 years they've produced hundreds of episodes about art, science, history, literature etc. Anyway the Moby Dick episode is really good and even the scholarly experts they have on as guests admit the book can be very boring in places! They even mention an edition that removes some of the long, boring, tangential passages about the minutiae of whaling and sticks more to the plot. Good luck!

no way! sense and sensibility is my favourite austen, it’s got a bunch of “plot twists”, maybe the character analysis part of it was boring to some but i found it fascinating. highly recommend!

im halfway through sense and sensiblity as of writing this. its surprisingly witty, and im always so eager to see how elinor will react to the drama around her :)

This's but the second video I've watched of yours and I already feel synchronized with your reading tastes, ha ha. Hurray! Thanks for introducing me to more than a few interesting books, too. Moby-Dick is basically Melville's thoughts, feelings and critical ideas expressed through the narrator of Ishmael as well as the story itself. Its famous first sentence already seems to put into question who the truest narrator is. My favourite part is when it's Christmas morning and they're just setting sail on the hardy, ice-covered Pequod, in good spirits and hoping for a voyage of good fortunes. I'd likely be down for a joint read of One Hundred Years of Solitude in a little while, especially owning to how I've got a lovely copy sitting on my bookshelves (and by that I mean my "good" bookshelves, where I keep my "good" books, lol). Right now, I'm planning on buying and reading the Chinese classic Water Margin, by Shi Nai'an I think. Super duper video!

i love the idea of reading 12 classics a year! that seems so manageable & takes some of the intimidation away. also omg. i LOVE tender is the night. it's my fav fitzgerald book!!!

I picked up Mrs. Dalloway last year and didn’t really like it. I think it’s because 16 is a bit too young to read Virginia Woolf. Her language is really advanced and even though my english is really really good, she’s on another level of advanced. There were lots of words I couldn’t understand and her sentences are just so so long. I’d finish the paragraph saying how did we get here? What was she talking about? But I believe that if I pick it up again this year, it will be a much more enjoyable experience. We’ll have to see if I do.

I read Moby Dick with my son. He’s 11 and surprisingly enough he really really enjoys classic stories so I got the version that’s shorter simplified for modern children’s reading level. And we fell in love with it! It’s more about the whalers the captain and the crew. The captains determination to seek revenge on the massive whale that’s killed many whaling ships and took his leg. He becomes consumed with revenge. That’s more what it’s about. I’m sure you’ll like it!

Watching this was almost kind of scary because your list was so similar to mine! I would absolutely love to buddy read them with you if you are willing. So, the ones I want to read on your list are: Mrs. Dalloway, Tender is the Night, One Hundred Years of Solitude, De Profundis, John Keats' Poetry, Sense and Sensibility, Moby Dick, Arthur Rimbaud's Poetry (though in English), and Snow Country. I'm actually reading Mrs. Dalloway this month for my O.W.L.s, but will gladly talk about it with you when you get to it. I also have Crime and Punishment on my list, but I'm so daunted by its length haha...

That's so odd you've heard people say Sense & Sensibility is boring. It has a similar structure as Pride & Prejudice. And I actually prefer it to Pride & Prejudice.

Very interested to hear what you think of Snow Country. That was my introduction to Kawabata and Japanese literature, and I would probably list it in the top 20 or so novels I’ve read. My understanding of Kawabata is that some of his prose was written like haiku in sentences. I also encourage you to dip back into the ocean with Melville. It’s a dark, strange book that pulls us into the same vortex that haunts Ahab on his quest. I love Keats and hope that you enjoy the multitude of his verse, same with the fury that is De Profundis, maybe the only work where Wilde is himself and not the persona of Oscar Wilde. I hadn’t heard of this challenge but am going to take a look. Thanks for sharing.

I also planned to read One hundred years of solitude and getting my way through Keat's works this year. I probably should also read the Rimbaud I have on my shelves but in the last two years I really let my french go and now diving back in feels intimidating.😬 Good luck on the new year!

I love classics! This year I've read the haunting of hill house, Dune (does this count as a classic?) and Captain Alatriste. One hundred years of solitude was required reading for me in high school and I loooooved it. I can't wait for you to read it! Let me know if you'd like some recommendations for Latin-American classics! I feel I can never talk to anyone about them. I'm adding some of these to my TBR. The next classic I'm reading is Little Women. I also have Moby Dick on my list and I'm so scared of it too. Also, did I just find Snow Country for 3,5€ and subsequently bought it? Yes.

I was definitely scared of moby dick too. But I ended up being really glad I started it. I’m still working on it, and it may be helpful to split it up. I’ve been enjoying it more when I’m able to take it in chunks, but the writing is very fun and the history is really fascinating if you google while you read!!

I wanna read Tender is the Noght by F Scott Fitzgerald as well. The problem I have with Fitzgerald is the sad component to his story. I think that’s why I wasn’t a huge fan of The Great Gatsby. I read A Hundred Years of Solitude when I was young and it just didn’t register with me much. May be I should pick it up now cause that definitely wasn’t the time for me to read it. I have yet to pick a Virginia Woolf. Crime and Punishment I have read and thoroughly enjoyed, hope you do too.

But, i am planning to read it in Eng, cuz i want to practise and also read more books. So is it too hard to understand, regarding it's the older book and also a classic? Tnx :)

I am of the opinion that, when it comes to reading Virginia Woolf and her stream of consciousness, it's much better to do it in physical format and not audiobook but it's just my own opinion (◍•ᴗ•◍) I would really like to read the woman in white!
