In the very first episode of the show, Benson (Robert Guillaume) moves into Governor Gatling's (James Noble) house, getting the chance to meet a few of his fellow staff members in the meantime.
From Season 1, Episode 1 'Pilot' - Benson arrives to help the Governor with his transition to the mansion, meanwhile, he helps prevent the deportation of beavers from the state that would inhibit the building of a multi-billion dollar industry.

ABOUT BENSON: As a favor to Jessica Tate, family butler Benson DuBois (Robert Guillaume) agrees to help her cousin, the newly elected Governor Eugene Gatling (James Noble), settle into his new mansion. Upon his arrival, Benson is set upon by the belligerent head housekeeper, Gretchen Kraus (Inga Swenson). But the governor's secretary, the amicable Marcy Hill (Caroline McWilliams), asks him to make himself at home and start organizing the overwhelming chaos. Always independent and the only truly sane adult in the Tate house¬hold., he must now cope with wild and wonderful life in the executive mansion and take responsibility for the Governor's ten-year-old daughter, Katie. And whether he's dealing with the weighty affairs of state or the wacky state of affairs in the governor's household, Benson always remains a loyal and trusted ally to those around him.

@@kathleenking47 And what's wrong with being a cleaner? My mother was a cleaner. She had her employers complimenting, envying her because she knew how to keep items in order, places clean! Once Benson left SOAP, the show just wasn't worth watching anymore. Benson was the reason I (and I'm sure many others) watched SOAP. Robert was a sensational actor in every roll he played!

They need to bring this show back to live TV channels. I am watching also Whose the Boss and Bewitched, Full House, The Facts of life. Sister, Sister! Sanford and Son, Frasier and Friends! Live TV need more shows on like Benson. Real funny comedy.

Just one more thing I love the Goveners honesty with Benson and the way he cares . That I would love to see more of. He needs a honest person to trust and I've seen good people with good hearts in office that could use having good people to help do good things.

The part I laughed so much when Governor Gatling mistaken Benson for Rev Jessie Jackson later said Rev Benson Jackson, then the Governor mentioned about his late wife was eaten by horses because his late wife wore a sugar plum costume made of sugar cubes.

After the pilot, Renee Auberjonois took over the role of the Governor's assistant. The Christmas episode was my favorite. The whole cast took turns performing carols. Inga sang "Silent Night" in German and Robert busted out the best rendition of "O Holy Night," that I ever heard, and to this day is still my favorite performance of that song. Later in the series, Benson becomes Lt. Governor.

Lewis J Stadlen played John Taylor for the rest of the first season, replacing David Hedison. Stadlen HATED doing the show and wanted to go back to Broadway, so the producers let him out of his contract after season 1.

I loved this show. Love how Benson moved up the ladder from Chief of Household Staff, Budget Director to Lt. Governor. Final episode was a great cliffhanger. Benson and the Governor going head to head in an election. Show ended before results were in. Brilliant

I don't remember if ABC ever aired this, because I didn't know until years later that David Hedison was in the pilot. Hedison played Spencer Harrison on Another World in the '90s.

Yes, ABC aired it on the first week. What is interesting is that when the series was placed in syndication (while the series was still in production, but without a syndication name change, this episode aired with the opening credits which features Lewis Stadlin.

Wait a minute!!! The other two characters with Benson in the opening scene, Gretchen Kraus and Marcy Hill, are played by actresses who played different roles in ‘Soap’, which was in the same fictional universe! How could that happen???
