The lady's father a Boer demanded that all his children speak Zulu first before Afrikaans due to his loyal Zulu mate Kepeng Khumalo , whom as young boys at the age of 8 stuck together and fled the brittish forces in 1901. Her father was send to a concentration camp in Harrismith , tent no 269

My Father, Dr. Stephen Thomas spoke Zulu and Xhosa fluently. He was born in 1919.

Yeah come on she's doing ok for going between English, Afrikaans and Zulu. A Zulu who speaks English also pronounces English with a different accent compared to someone who's mother tongue is English.

Well, it sounds like she could speak Zulu up to the age of 3 and that was it. No offense meant (before I get insulted), it's just that the title misleads the audience into believing that this lady can speak Zulu which she really can't. Lovely lady though and great story. I also doubt that a Zulu boy would have been named Kepeng (which sounds more Sotho) around those days in that setting, possible but highly unlikely.

what with the complaining and rude from few of you guy ? maybe when she young she can speak better Zulu but when she grow up and didn't used it at much => it may not realy 100% accurate or good same like my grandmother whom learn French since kid but when she grow up she forget them and only can speak few ( same age like the oldl ady in this video )

We just cared about playing, having fun and getting in trouble together at school. If I was getting yelled at by a teacher Arthur’s name was always in the same sentence. Jan Swan 'innocent'...interesting choice of word. I don't think they meant any harm but it's still quite patronising. I don't think you should need me to explain why the hook/title of the video is that someone 'classy' would speak Zulu is slightly off. Clearly this can go over some people's heads...depending on your world view. That's how it comes across to me but of course they may be the odd chance that something got lost in translation; that I and many other people are getting the wrong end of the stick... That said, patronising is how it comes across to me and I'm not about to feel miserable about it.
