My latest acquisition, a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria LTD. Fully loaded with automatic transmission, power windows, and vinyl roof! It needs a little bit of work, but should be a good daily driver.

A lot of these cars met their end in a demolition derby. They're getting close to becoming rare. They're the kind of car that has the room for possibilities.

You're right, these kind of cars used to be everywhere. Now it seems like there aren't very many at all, and even fewer that aren't junk.

Especially the pre 1988 LTD CVs and Grand Marqs. From what I've heard, the '88+ cars got weaker bumpers. The pre '88 model year cars got the big massive 5 mph bumpers. Town Cars kept 5 mph bumpers front and rear until 1991 if I recall correctly. Demo derbying one of these is a huge fucking waste of a panther body car- especially a box body. To think I used to enjoy watching old american iron like this smash into other old american iron. I started to change my stance after I learned that nothing is unfixable for the right amount of money. It's just that most people aren't willing to bother. So they just smash the shit out of cool cars like these. Good luck rebuilding a fucking demo derby car. If it wasn't a frame-off resto before, it definitely is now! What was once a reasonable project is now a five figure money pit. Cash 4 Clunkers wasn't any help either. Look at the lists of cars that met their end to that shit. It's unbelievable the power of stupid people in large groups (Congress, and the electorate, respectively). As other people hinted at before, good luck finding a $500 creampuff. $500 won't get you much more than a toilet nowadays. Compounding the problem is that most don't think these cars are worth saving, let alone taking really fucking good care of. Unlike something outwardly sporty like a Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, 'Cuda, Chevelle, Corvette, etc. Full size sedans, such as box panthers don't really get most people fired up. Even if they're cool, reliable, fun cars. It's just not the same. Most think they're slow, boring, geritatric haulers. And in stock configuration, that's understandable. '86 and up model years were much better, but not super quick either. But stock is for suckers anyway. The 5.0 aftermarket exists for a reason! Make slow cars fast, and make fast cars faster. Most box panther hot rodders just buy Mustang go-fast engine parts, and make em' work. From cylinder heads to spark plugs, it's all there. And most stuff bolts on- save for headers and exhaust (makes sense, the vehicles are of completely different dimension and lengths body-wise). /end nerd rage

***** I didn't much care for the '88-'90 design changes. They were alright but I prefer the pre-'88 squared off boxes, they're big, strong and vintage looking.

"This car doesn't have crumple zones, it just crumples whatever it runs into." I can validate this! Some kid pulled out in front of my 85' in a 98' Cherokee and his front end looked like a crushed soup can afterwards. All I had to replace on my Vic was the headlight bezel and it was as good as new. Wouldn't ask for a better first car.

Kyle Partlow, they're even tougher when bullet proof. When I was a police officer I bought a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria LTD from the county prison that had armor plates inside the doors between the trunk and back seat and along the firewall and while driving home from my shift I was shot at and the bullet hit the driver's door and although it sounded like someone broad sided me it only left a nickle sized dent in the door center so that car saved my life. But with the weight of the armor plates the 351 Cleveland and 4 barrel Holley carburetor couldn't get up the speed quickly in spite of the plaque which said Pursuit Package on the trunk lid.

I inherited my Dad's 84' Crown Victoria when he passed some years ago. It's only got 35,000 miles on it, runs great but the paint is a little faded. He almost never drove it. It still had the original dry rotted tires that I replaced. It's my pride and joy! I used to think of it as just some old car but now finally seeing it as the classic that really it really is. I had an 85. I got rear-ended in 2004 by a Camero on the freeway. Pushed my car into the one in front, and it into the next one, and it into the next one. The Camero driver managed to total 4 cars and damage to the 5th. It did bend the frame in the rear, but only bumper damage in the front. The car in front of me, and the Camero were both pretty bad looking. I wish I could've kept that car.

Nice base model '85 Crown. I own a 1989 LX. It is a beast. The engine, no, it's not fast, at least when stock. Once you get rid of the catalytic converters, and do some work on the 302 Windsor motor, it can become powerful like it should be.

My 1st car was an 85 crown victory. Bought it dirt cheap with 96,000 miles on it. Lasted me 8 years and drove like a dream. Besides brakes and normal maintenance the only thing I had to so is replace the gas tank when it rotted through, but living in northern Illinois with the salt and rust that was amazing

I have a thing for vehicles from 1985 because I was born in 1985.. There's one of these for sale in Sacramento for next to nothing right now and I want it so bad. Best part is they are still carburated so you don't have to deal with non-tunable injection. You just pull the smog 4 brl off and put on a block off plate for the EGR and run a regular 600cfm Holley on it 99% of the time and tune it right, and then pop the other one back on on smog day. (living in Commifornia) Granted it still won't make much power especially with smog timing curves but.. hey it helps.

If the outter tread on the tire was more worn than the inner tread, you may want to look into getting an alignment. If the car pulls to the right/left or if there is a lot of play in the steering of the car, an alignment should solve the problem.

***** They do indeed. My '88 Grand Marquis LS has 205k miles and uses no oil. I always outsmart myself trying to be frugal. Like, when I ordered one tire. 215-75-15. The car had 70 series tires.Then, I had to buy three more to make them all the same size because the first one had already been mounted. Oh well, it needed tires, anyway.

I just (2 days ago) bought a 1986 Crown Victoria 2-door...with...17660 actual miles on it. I'll be working on touching it up too. It is way cleaner than this four door.

Wheels should go back to being between 14 and 16 inches. They look better. I hate the wheels that are bigger that 17 inches. They're just too big and too expensive to replace.

I agree with the modern wheels, more expensive to replace tires.
@javaman2883
@javaman2883 3 жыл бұрын
Those bigger wheels make bumps in the road more apparent. Funny thing. They talk about bigger tires on trucks causing MPG, due to greater rotational weight. A 18inch wheel weight more, and had more weight out farther from the center, compared to 15inch wheels. So those must have an impact on MPG, yet manufactures keep putting them on cars because they look cool (to some vocal people)

That 6 feet chrome bar on the front isn't the actual bumper. Despite being made out of 3 millimeter thick steel, according to Haynes it's just the bumper cover. The actual bumper is the M-shaped beam behind it, made of similar gauge steel. Although new cars are safer at high speeds, it was a big mistake to drop the 5mph bumper standard. These old cars survive touch&go parking, saving us from a lot of hassle...

Checking in with a 1988 with 127k miles. So the whole "car is not a hot rod"/doesn't kick into gear thing... Try doing a full vacuum line and gasket job. I had a overheating problem and one of the reasons we found was that the vacuum line wasn't getting the right pressure and we narrowed it down to a single valve. COMPLETELY different car and acceleration after replacing that small piece of plastic. But, that only lasted a couple days before it went back to it's delayed kick and soft strength. I met someone tonight who had a similar problem but it was a gasket seal on the throttle, so I'm going to look into getting the vacuum lines, vacuum valves,gaskets all replaced. I still have an overheating problem but it doesn't burn oil. I have to replace about 1L of water every day and I'm going to check the heater core like in your other vid. Also, I blew a headgasket, and the car was still able to make it 30 miles in traffic to a safe spot until the shops opened. But they only replaced one headgasket, even though the car still runs pretty good. Just have to let it cool down and not hot rod it so much...

No, it didn't work right from the start. It's a problem with the FM tuner I think. It will tune in low frequencies like up to about 93 but then the humming starts and if you go all the way to 108 it is really bad. I've got some ideas for it, though.

I cant believe you removed the tape deck. just buy some cassette tapes. or even make some mix tapes. don't need a cd mp4 or whatever else you modern people use to listed to music. yes I know I sound offended its just I hate when people deprive real cars from their original specs aftermarket or not. tapes are better. and it was the current technology so it belongs there. well moving on to the next one.

I think the front end needs aligning. Had the same issue with the wear on both front tires on my '88 Ford pickup. Also, the shimmying in the steering wheel after the tire rotation is probably a result of unbalanced tire pressures. Lots of times people run different pressures in the fronts than the rears. Awesome car though man. I'm slowly looking to get one like this. They're great cars and nobody has them anymore. Pretty cool!

You can upgrade your wheels to 15" because Ford offered 15" aluminum alloy wheels as a factory option. I've got a set from my 84 Crown Vic, if you leave in the NYC area, come and get them for free!! The shimmy is likely due to your old tires.

That car is great for a most powerful modern Ford engine and racing shifter replacing the automatic transmission. I like this as a souped-up speedy sedan.

You got a steal on that deal! Great car! Love the 80s-91 crown vics. Like the roundish tail lights best though. Did the radio work before you unhooked the cassette player?

Luv your car...nice job. Any idea on mpg? I would guess 20 hwy? I'm working on an 85 Crown Vic with a 5L. Hasn't run since 2009. Gas tank was rusted out so I replaced it and fuel pump. It has an excellent body and interior. Beautiful leather seats. Got a bit more work to do but it's running smoothly. Will have to post a pic.

***** It seems that you want to keep your Crown Vic forever. Cool. Follow the manufacturers recommendations for maintenance. Don't be cheap. Take it to your local Ford dealership, and follow the maintenance schedule. I'm just a poor ol' factory worker and don't have a lot of money, but I rely on my dealership to take care of my car. They do a fantastic job. An oil change is $19.95. Poo on the "30 minute" places. Replace the fluids, lubricate all of the lube points, like the door hinges, hood hinges, trunk hinges, ball joints, U-joints, ect. You may think that you are saving money by having your own tire changing tool, but you're just fooling yourself. Let tire assemblage to the pro's. It's cheap, comparing the importance of professionals taking care of your tires. With the purchase of new tires, they will provide FREE rotation & balance of your tires for the lifetime of the tires. Get an alignment of the front end. It usually comes with a warranty and is inexpensive. I just got one for my '03 Crown Vic and cost $22. Going with a 205 size tire just degrades the ride & handling from a great Crown Vic. A 225 will make you a happier owner.

I just came across this and just have to say: replace all 4 tires, balance and 4 wheel Alignment. Why do people try to cheapen out on tires?

Hell yeah man! I've got an 86' myself. Gotta say I've never been big on the tan or brown colored ones though. I've got a light blue one with a white top with blue interior. On an unrelated note someone tell me where I can get a replacement for the "LX" emblem on the trunk. Those are so fucking hard to find and I've been tearing my hair out trying to find one.
