Derek's expression at 2:27 says it all.... This is my favorite version of this song, and I remember my half-uncle whenever I hear it. We lost him when he OD'd at 25, when I was 18, after trying to get clean multiple times. It is a beautiful, haunting song -- and while it always seems to end too soon, and you wish you could call to them and tell them to play another verse -- that's it. That's the point. Music is a powerful drug, one that acts on emotions, and this song conveys those awful emotions my family (and, unfortunately, many thousands of others) experienced better than any other.

"ends too soon".... Too true. That observation kind of adds another level to this tune, doesn't it?

It's hauntingly Beautiful and too true... I have lost many people in my life from drugs... I definitely feel Greggs voice puts so much emotion in this song it touches your soul...

Quiet desperation. The solo in this version is unbeliveble. Masterpiece.

Gregg sings this from his soul. You can hear the pain in his voice.

By far the best acoustic cover of this song!, the Vocals are haunting and painful in a sense. The guitars 🎸 are better than anyone I heard. And this song just reaches inside me, I had a leg amputated and was on morphine for a while, to long, and it no long gave me any pleasure, I just needed it to function. So I can relate to this song, and it’s so true. May anyone fighting addiction keep fighting one day at a time, I like to go from meal to meal, something I learned in the army. God bless you all!

Dammit, gives me the chills, everytime I listen to these guys play this song, it could have been written by Gregg, at certain points in his life, amazing.

I don't have the words to describe how great this performance was. Greg sings this as only a man who has been there could. incredible.

just curious, does anyone else get angry when people randomly cheer during a song, especially when it gets quiet? how can someone hear such a heartfelt song like this, written about a friend lost to drugs, and their reaction is to yelp and screech? such disrespect to these talented men pouring their hearts out for us
@elizabethlinsay91935 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is very disrespectful, especially if they are singing about someone close to them.

A lot of people view music, and concerts like a big party, they have little musical acumen or innate understanding, so they scream to feel they are being noticed it is like an inability to suspend their own ego, like a mob of jocks at a football match, we all have different ways of showing appreciation, theirs is just very irritating and why I don't attend many concerts these days.
@jpbmjordan4 жыл бұрын
I go to a lot of concerts and it’s getting worse. I think the problem is social media and smart phones. They have given everyone a short attention span and the need to be the center of attention at all times.

What a great voice, loved it for 50 years, thanks GA. I never had the pleasure of seeing Duane, but every time I see and hear Derek, and I don't mean this disrespectfuly to anyone, I just think Duand Allman reincarnate, man can Derek play! And Warren Haynes is massively underrated. A great player, understated but always on the money.
@jasonmiller29624 ай бұрын
You can definitely see the influence Duane has on Warren and Derek and so many others. I get chills to this day every time I hear the song Free Bird and Ronnie Van Zant dedicates it to Duane

- Milk-blood refers to a heroin shot. Some heroin users fill a syringe with a heroin mixture that has a white (“milk”) colour. Then they stick the needle of the syringe in a vein and pull the plunger to check if they are inside the vein

This song has taken on an even more desperate meaning than ever given the opioid and now fentanyl crisis that has ravaged America. I mean the dope they using now is so vile and cut with things that nobody stands a chance on it

This song, no matter who does it, always ends about 2:30. Too soon. When I was a kid it was the first chords I taught a guy who went on to be a guitarist for his whole life.

This song has been the beginning of many guitar player's journey-it was like the first song many encounter that has a true heart-level to it!
