my unpopular opinion: there'sway too much pink / princess things going on in young kids' ballet classes (think ages 2-6). and i think this does not help with the prejudice that ballet is for little girls only. it would be much more welcoming for curious little boys if everything wasn't pink and princess-y.

my opinion: there should be more beginner ballet classes for adults! I just started ballet a month ago after my daughter's studio finally opened up for an adult class. It's hard, but it's great for working on my flexibility. Also, I tend to hyperextend just standing normally. My teacher doesn't like the look hyperextension gives so I have to be conscious of it all the time.

I agree entirely. Adult classes are difficult to find, although I have found adult classes hidden under the title, Adult Movement. Whatever they call it, I've always believed ballet to be the absolute best total body workout, yet it is mostly non- to low-impact (few to no jumps), so not so hard on knees and spine. Most instructors for these classes will keep them non-impact, specifically for the older adults. But what a way to get and keep fit!

I think it is so important for older dancers and even fans of dance to share history, it just isn't being taught anymore. The way we accessed dance information before the net was through books, almanacs and magazines, now it is dance moms and SYTYCD, which while they have their place, present no depth of education to our kids and students. History is so important!

My controversial dance opinions: 1. Leotards are the best thing ever 2. I feel that nowadays, the art of dance is a lot different because everyone does tricks now instead of actually dancing (which is cool, but I miss the days of just dancing) 3. You do not need to be flexible to be a good dancer 4. People who think tik tok dancers are professional dancers are just stupid and it’s honestly offensive when there are so many dancers out there who train their butts off and don’t get half the credit 5. Jumps and leaps are easier than turns 6. I love old school jazz shoes 7. Hip hop is my least favorite kind of dance 8. Half sole shoes (or turners) don’t actually help me turn 9. Turning boards do not actually help 10. Gymnastics and dance are honestly so different from eachother 11. (This might actually be a popular one but idk) Dance moms is an awful representation of what dance really is

This is a really interesting list. But even though I'm not a dancer myself, the point that stood out to me the most was #2, regarding tricks etc. I'm not sure if you've ever seen this article that goes into some depth about it www.dancemagazine.com/instagram-dance-2585216791.html?rebelltitem=1#rebelltitem1 I was expecting that to be brought up in the video. Otherwise, basically I agree. Because believe it or not, even in (artistic) gymnastics (where I _come_ from) we had (until 2017 where there has been improvement) been slowly watching the death of artistry at the hands of the excessive use of difficulty flips and tricks (which I do like if done correctly) even though there is supposed to be a balance. So it's a widespread epidemic! Even in Rhythmic they have this problem; in Figure Skating they just had introduce what is known as the 'Zagitova rule' to combat this. But I do think it is more a phase than an _evolution._

My unpopular opinion is that some teachers force turnout too much! You see the students' toes pointed straight to the side while their kneecaps are maybe 45°. 😳 Seems like a recipe for knee problems. And I am not living for the banana feet and hyperextension. I like the look of a nice straight leg with a pointed, but not super-curved foot. It's getting so exaggerated now 😲

Maybe ballet wouldn't be considered as "boring", "outdated" and prissy if we left the extreme gender roles behind and let two women or two men pas de deux, men dance en point and women do jumps. But it's always boys do this and dance like this, girls do this and dance like this.

I think there should be more oopurtunities for adult ballet dancers to perform on stage. I have started doing beginner again after various times on and off due to money and distance being problems before. As a dancer who studied anatomy and physiology in university, I can say in reference to the VMO/quad discussion... They are actually the same thing!! The quadricep is not a muscle. It is a GROUP of four different muscles, and one of them is the VMO. This means when you say to “engage your VMO” or “developpé from your VMO” etc, your just specifying which particular quadricep you want the dancer to lead with. Hope that shed some light!! 👍🏼

Here my controversial take: it’s time to stop celebrating George Balanchine. We can still, of course, recognize him as a wonderful artist and influential figure, but he was an absolutely horrific person. The amount of damage he did to his dancers psychologically and physically is inexcusable. Also, he was a little bit creepy and perverted. It’s time for ballet to admit that. Obviously, I’m not saying that we should stop performing his work or try to erase the good things he did. BUT we shouldn’t brush off the many, many terrible things he did, too.

Can't speak for ballet but there are a lot of adult classes in other styles, at least near me. I dance ballroom with mostly people older than me (I'm 29) and my tap class is from about 20 to 60 year old. Lots of people in their 20s to 40s taking adult hip hop as well and my mother belly dances at 56. While there do seem to be adult beginner classes for ballet, really advancing usually means eventually being in a class full of teenage girls. Funny how, if you're 12, studios will force you to take ballet before you are allowed to take anything else but at 22, you struggle to find ballet classes if you WANT to take it.

I started doing ice skating at around september time, I’ve moved up to level 5 where as a woman who started around the same time as me is still on the first level along with some other adults that have started ice skating. They are still learning to ice skate I’m just saying that it seems to be harder to learn for them than someone younger where they can get used to it easier

Mallory Jaylon I am also a physical therapist. I would like to point out that evidence shows that the VMO can not be isolated from the quad in reference to knee extension as both have the same nerve innervation. I think Claudia is trying to point out that it is important to maintain hip external rotation (turnout) as the hip elevates past 90 degrees and therefore it feels like you should lead with medial part of the knee, but is getting confused when she is using muscle terminology to discuss this concept.

@@alyshamonduori1422 How are you both physical therapist and not know that Vastus Medialis Obliquus is one of the quadriceps muscles ? i think the best way to describe lyrical is that it’s a more “free” way of ballet. everything is turned out and pointed like ballet but it gives you a little more freedom as to adding your own style while still keeping “pretty”. contemporary can look like lyrical but there’s no restriction as to turnout, pointed feet, straight legs, etc. i think like lyrical = pretty and contemporary = sometimes pretty but can be dark

tani t They were all the rage when I was training and also dancing professionally. And tall dancers are beautiful. But being a tall ballerina sucked. Partnering was extra complicated, my extra weight broke my pointe shoes down faster, and there was more pressure to be underweight than there was for short dancers. I always envied the petite girls.
@madisonsteele11
@madisonsteele11 4 жыл бұрын
Chase Kimball but why would you be envious of us petite girls?? Besides the weight difference for pointe shoes, why? I feel that the weight standards are higher for shorter people because we “look bulkier”, although yes you want to be lifted easier but that’s not reality for a tall person, cuz they just naturally weigh more (typically). You guys have such lonnggg beautiful legs and look thinner because of “your length”. I have long legs for my height but still, my “legs aren’t as nice as a tall dancer’s. ” I’ve just turned 16 and I’m 5’1... supposed to be 5’6 but I got my period at 11, when I was 4’9-4’10?? (6 months before I turned 12) so idkk what will happen in regards to my height. Anyways, aren’t most men in ballet like minimum 5’10?? Pointe adds height but I feel like partnering would be easier because most men aren’t short in ballet. Although, there are many amazing “shorter men” as well. Plus short people aren’t looked at as much and we “look more awkward”... but we’re beautiful dancers as well and height doesn’t determine talent. Just trying to start a conversation to learn more, no hate 😊
@missanthropy6174
@missanthropy6174 4 жыл бұрын
Madison Steele It would be ideal if most men in ballet were at least 5’10, but in my experience, they aren’t and there are few who are taller. And even if all men in ballet were that tall, I’m 5’9 on flat so there’s really not much difference. Every male friend I had told me that finger turns, overhead lifts, and any kind of extended arm position was much easier with dancers who were no taller than 5’5. With regards to weight and aesthetics standards being different for tall dancers, I definitely think there is more pressure for tall dancers to be skinny. I really only have my own experience to base my opinion though, just keep that in mine. For my entire career, I and girls in my height range were bullied into keeping a lower body fat percentage than girls in the shorter range. I also think that being taller looks slimmer is a myth. Scientifically speaking, your weight increases exponentially with height, especially on bodies with high muscle mass ratios. And if your partner struggles to lift you, you’re going to look heavy. Plus, petite dancers have a way of looking small and delicate, which is an advantage to looking light and slim. I think you definitely made some good points though, and this is a good conversation to have.

Lyrical is a combination of Ballet and Jazz, whereas Contemporary is a combination of Ballet and Modern. I got my BFA degree in Dance from a Modern conservatory- many students there came from competition studios that I would assume study Lyrical. Yet during my Modern training, the school I went to sought to separate themselves from commercial dance forms- I don’t think I ever once heard the institution acknowledge “Lyrical” as a genre of dance. It was taboo; the vibe I got was that Lyrical was looked down upon for being superficial in comparison to Modern and Contemporary dance. As a student there, one concept I learned is that dance isn’t a secondary art form. In other words, the idea that we absolutely need music to dance is absurd- though it plays a huge roll in the Ballet class, many Modern choreographers still avoid lyrics, let alone music, entirely. Which makes sense why some in the Modern world might not have the most respect for Lyrical, a form in which the music is meant to carry and inform the entire dance.

I was held back at my long-time studio because I wasn't stick thin and "didn't fit in" according to the head of the studio. I was one of only two girls not allowed to be in the performing group, which was also their requirement for pointe shoes. My pre-pointe teacher, who was a professional dancer, thought I was more than ready at 11 1/2 and I knew I was. I left after that and switched studios twice to get pointe shoes before the teacher at the second studio let me have them out of pity at 15, two weeks after telling my Mom I would never be ready.

I think "Lyrical" originally developed out of both ballet and jazz dance styles (called "lyrical jazz") as a way to portray emotion/story through the lyrics of a song. It was popularized through dance competitions and - later - "So You Think You Can Dance".

Oh how I LOVE a good hot take 😂Also, you're so right about the necessity of using your quads in a develope! I CRINGE when teachers who have clearly never studied kinesiology or anatomy say things like, "Don't use your quads to lift your legs, just lift from the back of your legs"... This is not actually possible anatomically, so instead of demonizing the use of one's quadriceps, I really wish more teachers would take the time to explain how to use them properly!

In Cecchetti, 3rd position of the feet is used as a "transitional" position. For example, if your leg is lifted into arabesque and you want to chase same leg into 4th position, your foot will need to pass through 1st, 3rd, & 5th position before finishing in 4th. Hope that makes sense..... As far as dancing in 3rd, I really don't, nor do I choreograph or teach to dance in 3rd.....I only use/teach for placement and transition.

Yes to the Balanchine hands! I can remember so vividly ballet teachers telling us to pretend we were holding a very fancy sandwich between our thumbs and middle fingers. Yikes! Totally agree with #16 in particular. Going onto pointe should be about bone/muscle/ligament development and not set at a specific age. All dancers (all people) develop at different rates so it has to be based on your physiology, not some arbitrary number. My own controversial ballet opinion is how, as an artform and cultural touchstone, it remains almost exclusively whitewashed. At least in terms of ballet in the Western hemisphere. I enthusiastically applaud the move toward different body types in ballet, as mentioned by Claudia, but those bodies come in different colors, too.

The sad thing is ballet doesn’t even have to try to be white washed. Certainly as a dark dancer you can hear a lot of negative things about your skin tone and aesthetics, but it’s so expensive that the larger socioeconomic issues keep many POC, in the US at least, from dancing. It’s the same for figure skating and gymnastics. Most kids who get to dance like that are from at least solid middle class families.

i think ballet is white washed because it originated in europe, so european/white girls are the main people who do ballet. i don’t think ballet discriminates against different skin tones but it is just natural for white girls to do ballet because of its origin. hehe i don’t rly know, i’m an asian ballerina
@starsupontheland
@starsupontheland 4 жыл бұрын
@@kayleychan5695 That might tie into it, but there's more to it. Part of it is that ballet is very expensive, and white people tend to have much more money than Black people. Another part is that it just has a racist history. George Balanchine said that Black dancers break up "the line" and shouldn't be in the swan corps. Black dancers are systemically oppressed. Some are told to lighten their skin tone with makeup, or to use products to change their hair. Some are purposefully left out of roles that their white colleagues are given. I'm pretty sure there's also a hiring gap, with more white people getting hired than Black. Finally, look up "ballerina" or "ballet" on the web. Practically all of the pictures are of white people. Another issue is pointe shoes and tights. Until recently, it's been very hard for dancers with darker skin tones to get pointe shoes and tights that match. Luckily several mainstream brands are now working to change that, but it's still a current issue.

Number 10 is only relevant for dancers who want to peruse a career in ballet, the Prix de Lausanne is not something the vast majority of kids who take dance classes will ever do, most kids dance for fun. Stage time can of course give you confidence not just in dance but in life, however it can also be the source of unwanted pressure, anxiety and make kids miserable. Let’s not suck the joy out of dance and be obsessed with end goals, being present rather than constantly striving for things makes people healthier and emotionally balanced.

Lyrical Jazz is a mixture of modern Ballet and Jazzdance. When I am informed right it developed in the beginning of the 1990ies. In Lyrical the idea is to create movement out of the lyrics of a song. It is not possible to dance lyrical Jazz on a instrumental piece of music. Then it’s just Contemporary Dance. Lyrical was my favourite discipline. What I see nowadays with dance moms or similar shows s got nothing to do with real Lyrical. However everything seems to be called Contemporary. But what I see is kind of gymnastics and some sort of modern dance. In Lyrical Jazz we don’t have to do salti or show hyperflexibility. It’s more to vary in rhythm and tempo, tension- relaxation, hard-soft, for example a slow, high rondé followed by a fast pas de bourrée and a fall, or a hard arm movement followed by a soft armripple

I think Lyrical maybe just is not a term they used in Austrailia? It's actually NOT a new term, it's actually an OUTDATED TERM!! We don't call it Lyrical here in Canada or the United States anymore, it was actually already an outdated term by the time they started using it in Dance Moms. Lyrical is just a sub-category of Contemporary. The Term Lyrical was used in the 1980's and 1990's to refer to Contemporary Ballet and Modern inspired Jazz Dance. So yes, the outdated 'pretty Lyrical' style that is SO signature to Abby Lee Miller and Dance Moms.

It's so refreshing to hear most of your "unpopular" opinions advocate for a diversity of body types and for dancers taking care good care of themselves

I have a muscular body type, and many of my ballet teachers told me that I had the right body for ballet. I haven’t danced in 20 years, but I did dance from my younger years into early adulthood.

I absolutely love this vid. I started ballet in 2017 -when I was 15 and your videos had helped me to reach the level of my peers at class. My controv. ballet fact: ballet isn't a sport, but an art, because you study it on art school and it is performed at a theatre. Love yah

I think it's like skating. It's both. Because people do compete ballet pieces, though it is less common than artistic performances

@@madeline2282 Skating, like gymnastics and all other artistic sports (including Dancesport) have Codes of Points; nationally and internationally standardised scoring systems set by their national and international governing bodies; respectively; and most of all have composition/technical/compulsory requirements (the terminology varies from sport to sport), which consequently give each of them their objectivity--they key component in a sport. Dance has *none* of these things...at all. The afformentioned are artistic performances scored and judged under a *sport-format,* this is not the case in dance competitions. Dance is an art (with ballet being considered High Art) and so should be respected as such, not conflated with something else because it sounds/seems more _cool._ Because where dancers are *DEFINITELY* athletes, not all athletes compete in sport. Even the divers, acrobats, aerialists, gymnasts etc at the Cirque du Soleil are specifically told that if they wish to join the company they should be *DONE* with their sporting careers, because they are now being hired as performing artists. P.S. not trying to lecture or anything, just pointing out that ballet/dance literally lacks the components required for it to be considered a sport.

Turning en pointe is easier from a physics perspective, rotational friction is dependent on the radius of the surface contacting the floor so because pointe shoes have a smaller radius you don't need to push as hard to turn

i agree with everything that you said beside the high leg line leotards. i just don’t think that they look good on everybody. i’m not a skinny dancer by any means but i’m also not large. they just seem to ride up my butt quite a bit and they don’t cover my crotch. like at all. lol

I think the gymnastics advice really depends on your body type. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who struggles to keep any muscle on their frame at all. I'm so thin that Gymnastics but more importantly, Tumbling, is just a great cross training exercise, but doesn't take anything away from me working in turnout, it helps me keep all of my leg muscles balanced. As for upper body, again it doesn't make me too overly developed because I'm so thin, so I don't have overly bulky shoulders or traps, etc, anything that would take away from using a graceful port de bras. So I think that I would actually recommend tumbling and acrobatics for many dancers, even aspiring ballet dancers.

It also depends upon how good of a teacher you have. I have seen girls who were really strong and flexible from gymnastics pick up dance as a teenager. Unfortunately they didn't have access to strong technical teachers and pretty much muscled through. People around them thought they were great dancers because they could jump and leap but they had no technique. It used to bother me because I danced my whole life and was not naturally strong but had decent technique. None of us were planning to become pros though. I actually improved more as an adult because some things clicked for me that didn't as a teenager.

@@joyfuljaj yes I agree with that! that is the same reason I would recommend it. Especially with kids, I see the kids who take Gymnastics as well as dance, succeed at dance a lot faster.

I agree with your opinion on no age limit for pointe shoes. I did a presentation on pointe shoes for my dance history class and found that a few people, I don't remember who, said to wait until the growth plates were CLOSED BEFORE starting pointe work. It was stated that if done too soon it could mess up your body and there was no way to fix it.
