A cheap hack one of my teachers gave me a long time ago, is to use floss when sewing in pointe shoes! Your ribbons will NEVER fall out!

Yes, indeed but it has to be waxed! The kind of thread which comes with Bunheads or Bloch sewing kits is very similar to waxed dental floss. But surely the dental floss may be a much cheaper solution ;)

My mum, who quilts and makes clothing, used Kevlar thread on my pointe shoe ribbons, and I rarely had to restitch, and could use my ribbons for multiple pairs as a kid. Yes, that Kevlar, the bulletproof vest Kevlar.

I'm not a ballet dancer but I find all of the preparation fascinating. I love how you try for a double and pull a triple turn, though - some things remain with you always. Perhaps you could do a video (or series of videos) about your career with the Royal Ballet - like how did it feel to get picked out of the corps for the Chosen One in Rite of Spring? And all the other stories I'm sure you have...

Capezio/ Bunheads actually has these things called knot keepers, and it’s a no-sew alternative to sewing the knots for a performance!

OMG, when she said Bloch heritage in a 5.5 XXX, I was like I literally wear those exact same style but I'm a 5 and no X (Yes I have super narrow feet). And for some reason, this made me super happy because I adore Claudia ( and also being an Aussie myself! ) and her teaching and technique are just amazing. Wish I didn't live in such a rural area because where I am we only have 3 studios and only 1 really focus on ballet (which is the one I'm at) and maybe you could do a tour around to the rural areas and share some of your experience with us. not many people who become perfesinals come out here they prefer to stay is citys which is a bit of a bummer but i get at least I have a studio to dane at.

Oh my goodness, beautiful pirouettes, still!! I just got en pointe about a month ago, & have been getting bruises on both of the tips of my big toes. I feel like I could be advancing quicker if not for the pain it's causing (I have been both cutting short & taping my toenails). Any tips??? (I posted this on another video but thought this one might be more appropriate since it's on pointe!

Michaila S maybe try a tiny bit of lamb’s wool under the tips of your big toes (not too much that you can no longer feel the floor though) or on the sides of your feet (the bunion area), that way it might relive some pressure on you’re big toes. You could also try standard toe pads. There’s also this special kind of toe pad called the Perfect Fit Pointe. You custom make these toe pads yourself, and I’ve heard they’re life changing lol. They have a tutorial on KZfaq that explains how they work and how to make them. :)

Michaila S if the problem continues, you may need to get your shoes resized. If the shoe width is too wide, it will cause you to sink into it. Maybe try sizing down a touch so that your metatarsals are supported, so that there isn’t so much pressure on your toes. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the useful information! Currently I'm using Ouch Pouches, which is why this is such a wonder to me. I do have very narrow toes/feet, so the next pair I get, I'll probably have a fitting for. Those toe pads sound dreamy, lol =D

I always thought the position of the ribbons depends on your foot, arch, training level and sometimes the type of shoe or shank. I have never seen this before - where the ribbons are positioned according to the fabric of the shoe.

I usually use the Bloch heritage as it fits me really well but few days ago I decided to try a different pair and went to Freed to get fitted, but I think I was fitted incorrectly because I’m sinking in my shoes. I think it’s because it’s too Square for my feet. Anyone know how I can fix this temporarily?

Elizabeth W I‘ve had that problem too because the box in various Blochs are too big for my feet. I have Russian points now, they have a different shape and are very good for slim feet 🦶

no way i can beat that sewing my current shoe because this shoe has a suede-ish kinda hard to sew heel area so it takes forever to sew elastics. the ribbons are fine though

Just got my first pair of pointe shoes a couple days ago (I'm 12 years old)! Just finished sewing my ribbons and elastics with this video! My dance school doesn't offer pointe classes until you're old enough so I'm practicing at home and learning with youtube videos until I'm old enough. When you are just out of demi-pointe and into pointe do you need to sew elastic or can you just do ribbons? I need to know because I don't have elastic and want to know if I need to buy some.

Stella Mariel Just ribbons is not safe. Just elastic can be done with those with really really strong ankles and feet A like professionals. Having both is not for looks - it’s for safety.

Tried sewing my first pair of pointe shoes this way but didn't work :'( the ribbons were too far back and the sides of the shoes kept splaying open when I go on pointe... so unfortunately this doesn't work for everyone!
