Claudio Gentile....probably the toughest defender of that era. I remember the classic quote, "either the ball will pass me or the opposing player.....but not together!"

It's funny, but the defensive partnership of Gentile and Scirea in itself was pretty much a perfect representation of Italian football. Gentile, on one hand, cynical, ruthless, and willing to stretch the rules right to the limit to win, and on the other hand, Scirea, graceful and sublime, a genius who created magic on the pitch.

@@Rex67Diego9not just in 86 but most of the 90 squad used all the negative tactics possible to "kill" a match and try getting to penalties. It helped Vs Yugoslavia and Italy, but they tried this underhand method against the Germans and thankfully they were undone by the late penalty. Watch the way the players lose their cool at the referee when that decision was given! Alf Ramsey was correct in 1966 about them being animals and even in this last week or so, they've been trying dirty tactics in the Paris Olympics competition. I don't class Messi as a cheat but then neither was Gabriel Batistuta or Jonas Gutierrez (a player disgracefully treated by my club's despicable former owner Mike Ashley, but deeply loved by Geordie fans even now!), nor Osvaldo Ardiles either,but it does seem Argentinian players can resort to some unpleasant behaviour when they can't win using their skills.

Gentile the hardest toughest most uncompromising defender. Relies on brute strength and aggression. Scirea the politest fairest gentlemanly defender. Relies on skill reading the game and positioning. Never got a red card in career. Playing together they were like Italy and Juventus' good cop bad cop.

The truth is you don't have to know much about football to understand what happened on that day - Diego was too much class for Gentile, completely outsmarted him everytime and Gentile couldn't stop him playing football, so HE resorted to playing rugby (look at Diego's torn shirt after the game and at his bloddy shins and ankles). Enough said

I am from Holland and i share STADIOAZTECA opinion. Passarella was also brutal, especillay with his elbows. But Passarella was also a wonderfull footballer, great passing, great leading, and heading, he even had a pretty good technique.

I am French (non biased) and clearly remember Claudio Gentile as being one of the most elegant and efficient backs ever. He was very far from the brutal style that the Argentinian defense was playing.

He was amazing at stopping the threats of the oppositions star man , but to be fair he could also play a bit of football he was just allocated to do a number on the most dangerous attacking players and came out on top most of the time & It was key to the Italians success, I personally loved the guy back in the day when football was a contact sport , I loved a tackle not like the game today where contact of the slightest touch and they go down like a hooker's knickers.

Well, defending is not just "kicking opponents", and defending is an essentail part of playing football. If defending is so easy, everybody should have defended well against a monster like Maradona. Only a few players could stop him.

He was not violent, he was never expelled for a violent foul. He has only been sent off once in his career, for hitting the ball with his hand. Maradona said he was violent, but the truth is that Maradona was sent off for a kick in the belly of a Brazilian national team player

This era was only surpassed by the 60's for hard players. I loved to hate them as I understood that era had players unable to be stopped legally. It was the football I grew up with, played by gentlemen.

Italy had some insanely good defenders and some of the best goalkeepers in the last 40 years. Scirea, Baresi, Bergomi, Maldini, Ferrara, Nesta, Cannavaro, the BBC trio (Barzagli Bonucci Chiellini), even the roughest ones like Materazzi and Gentile... Zoff, Tacconi, Pagliuca, Zenga, Peruzzi, Toldo, Buffon.

Per me Gentile numero 1 e stato il più forte difensore del mondo dal 1980 ad oggi . Maldini in numero 2 . Gentile ha fermato Zico e Maradona . anche nel campionato italiani nessuno andava via da Gentile . . @axoram Yes I remember Antognoni and many others players from Italia . Baresi,Bergomi,Maldini,Di Genaro,Conti,Scirea,Bagni. Italia always has great players of football. Many people do not like their style of playing,they preffer other countries like Holland for instance ,but Holland never win anything . I like the Seri A since I was a kid ,to me is the best league in the world . Take care .

Qué lloronas los que atacan a Gentile. No es su culpa que Maradona no haya podido pasarlo. Francamente, el problema no son los italianos o cualquiera que juegue a la defensiva. El detalle está en que la mayoría de los que ven fútbol están tan limitados mentalmente que son incapaces de apreciar las virtudes de ese estilo.

Beautiful football from Gentile and the Italians in 82. You can't compare with todays footballers at all. You got kicked back then and you got on with it. If you couldn't handle it, you lost. The Argies are such bad losers. They have never been angels what with the Captain Rattin spitting at the English players in 1966 when he got sent off. The cops even had to come on the pitch to drag him off. You didn't know about that? Now you do. Gentile is a legend for me.

In this above video, Mr. Claudio Gentile is talking about semi-final match of 1990 FIFA World Cup, that was between ARG and ITALY. Listen him carefully, he said I studied him for two days ! This is enough to say about Legend !
