This was by far the best demonstration for the right hand that I have seen yet. Thank you for making it so simple and easy to remember.

Cathy I have been looking for you all over KZfaq. Lots of instructors but none break it down as you do. I would like to say I lost my finger nails a couple years ago ( Chemo ). Off of it now, everything has grown back but, my nails. I tried reversed picks and they will work, but, I could not feel the strings. Well I put my manhood in my back pocket and went and got nails. I'll tell everyone don't mess with picks go get nails. I have sense progressed miles ahead of where I was. It has also become much more fun to practice. I'm retired in full recovery . When watching TV I get my banjo and practice Many more hours than I would before. GET NAILS. Thanks for the great lessons, don't stop.

This is the most clear and sensible explanation of this technique I’ve found. THANK YOU! I’ve been playing ukulele for a few years and love this style of play. I recently got myself a banjo and now I really want to learn clawhammer. I feel like this basic explanation will really help me as I tend to overthink things and trip myself up.

You are very thorough in your teaching and I like that. You don't go so fast and being new to claw hammer , that is great for me.; I 've been playing the guitar for 47 years so I'm so used to it . Playing the banjo is a whole different thing for me. thank you. says Judy Corrette in Wildwood, Fl

Great lesson - I like the way you break the clawhammer strum down into different elements to practice. I am coming from bluegrass so just practicing strumming down felt alien - after a week the muscle memory is beginning to kick in and I am now onto 'the pop'. I am definitely signing up.

Kathy, there are a lot of begining Banjo vids on youtube, but yours actually start with knowing nothing, which is what I need. Thank you. Yours appear to be the most useful so far. I got a good Banjo from a friend bought it for their son, who never stuck with it. What tuner should I get as it's woefully out of tune? Thanks.

Finally some real instruction. I do have a question. What would you suggest for someone without finger nails. I recently lost my nails being very slow recovering. I have two banjos, one blue grass very old Washburn and the other a Deering top end Good Time Special, but no nails. There must be a method, please help. I'll play them bear fingered if need be. They are not going to just set. Thanks Lee Smoky Mountain Rebel

On the pop part, is her thumb traveling beyond the 5th string and hitting as she pulls up?

Cathy, Although I've been playing guitar for the better part of 35 years I just picked up my 1st Banjo today! I've been watching your Claw hammer video & have been working at it. Lots of great stuff in there. My Boom Diddy needs practice (lol) I'm hoping that my muscle memory at 53 doesn't have Alzheimer's. A quick question, diligently practicing, how much would be a reasonable amount of time to properly get the right hand motion? Big difference from guitar. Anyhow, I appreciate the videos!

The thumb makes noise on the string as it goes UP, not when it hits down on the string. It hits down on the string(no noise) then when you lift off(uP) the thumb it makes noise

How dumb are the people that actually gave this a thumbs down ? What part of the correct technique was offensive?
