Hi, I have a question. Before bottling the beer do we use any method to kill the yeast post fermentation or does the yeast remain in the bottle and till the consumer drinks the beer? Does it make it a safe beer to drink?

@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Hi Brian. Was curious. I noticed the basket is mesh on all sides even up to the top. Seems like most of the ebiab systems like foundry/robo have a mash basket that is not mesh/perforated on the sides, but rather, only near the bottom. Does having a basket with mesh up to the top allow the flow to go out the basket near the top instead of filtering down through the grain? Does having the mesh all the way up the sides affect effeciency if it can "leak out" the sides near the top? Thanks!

Brian, thanks for all the great videos. I’ve been using the 120V version of this system for a while now. There’s no need for a double crush. The micron mesh level of the grain basket is small enough that I use a .025 setting on my mill and I hit my pre-boil and original gravities very consistently. One crush at that setting and you’re good to go.

How long does the 110v system take to come up to mash temp and then to boil temp? They tend to gloss over the timelines in their videos, which makes it hard to judge the system fully.

@@ShortCircuitedBrewers seems like the hops would work fine in the basket if you weren't using the pump though, correct? Hop spiders set too high most times so that you can't do more than a couple of ounces, so for IPA's, I'd think the basket for that would be a great selling point.

First of all. Your channel is awesome. I've learned so much about equipment and the process. I'm looking to upgrade from my 3 tier 10 gallon batch cooler system to an EBIAB. I've narrowed it down to the clawhammer 240 or the Anvil 18 gallon. In your opinion, which is the better system all the way around. I know the clawhammer is modular (which is why I'm kind of leaning that way) but also just recently saw that anvil now makes an 18 that does 10 gallon batches. Now I'm torn between the 2. Thank you for your response and for the information on all things brewing. Cheers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! They are both good systems so you really can't go wrong with either one. The Anvil has a little less power requirements than the clawhammer so that is a difference to note. The Anvil will run on a 20 amp inline GFCI (Did it last weekend as a matter of fact) so if you don't have a 240 volt outlet handy you can run it off a dryer outlet. Clawhammer as you said is modular and that is a plus since you can replace a component should it fail or you burn an element. Let me know which way you go. Use my links and help support the channel if you don't mind. 😁👍🍻

I run a DIY basket type system and I get between 85-90% efficiency regularly. My experience is that you do a normal strike water volume as if you were doing a 3 vessel brew. Use a smaller crush (I’m set to around .037”), slow down recirculation and stir about every 10 minutes. Then sparge to preboil volume as you would with a 3 vessel system. Of course this requires another vessel for sparge water, I use the grainfather hot liquor tank personally..

@CanadianBrewingChannel 4 жыл бұрын
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Hi Brian! I have auto tuned the controller. I may do it again. I was thinking of putting a "T" connector in line with the pump with a thermo well so I could see the actual temp of the wort as it circulates. (Not sure how accurate Clawhammer thermowell is where it is positioned). When I take a temp reading of the mash it is sometimes off by 5 F. (mash temp is lower than the wort at the bottom of the brewing kettle). I think its a flow issue.I never have stirred the mash half way through the mash but will try that as well. I wish that the basket sides were solid like Spike. The first 2 brews I did I got 60- 65% efficiency. Not happy with that as I would get 80% efficiency on my old system using a cooler and fly sparging. I set my mill to its tightest position (bottom of the line grain mill) and my efficiency went up to 70% I can live with that. I usually add an extra pound of grain. Over all I do like the system. Reach out any time Brian! Love your channel. You inspired me to go electric. Need more electric brewers YouTubing! Cheers. Shawn.

@@danielsweet937 I too would recommend a less expensive (and simpler) system for starting out. I went with a Mash & Boil for $300 (as I added the fermenting lid to it), and have done 30+ brews on it with great success. Fermenting in it is a HUGE bonus as well, as my cleanup is minimal, and it helps keep my brew days under 3.5hrs. It also eliminates a transfer, which is a risk point for contamination. The clawhammer is what I was looking to move up to next, but I don't think I would unless I needed to brew 20gallon or high gravity batches. If you want to do 2.5-3 gallon batches on the anvil/mash&boil type systems, there are PLENTY of online resources to adjust your recipie, and these systems will give you great versatility and ease of use for that size for sure.

Still trying to weigh my buying options ;-). Can you elaborate a bit about the temp probe and how it is "held" into the kettle port? I saw it quickly in one of CHS's vids. It looks a lot like an Inkbird style probe. I'm concerned with its accuracy at high temps and of course its longevity. I would think the RTD/XLR connector types would be more resilient.
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers 4 жыл бұрын
It is exactly what you are saying. A ink bird probe in a thermo well. It is not really held in at all just slides in. I typically use weldless RTD probes in my kettle. They are using a RTD probe in this case you'd just have to adapt it to a 3.5 mm plug. Which you can do because I've done it. 😉

On the fence with this system. Not sure I like the idea of a no sparge system. No rinsing of the grains??? all that yummy sugar left in the grains after the initial mash and draining. : (

All things considered, would you choose the Spike single vessel system or the Clawhammer single vessel system and why?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers 4 жыл бұрын
Not having brewed on the larger clawhammer system I can't say definitively, the capacities are about the same from what I can tell. I'd provably say the spike system due to the controller having replaceable parts. Having brew with electric for as long as I have... Things go bad eventually and can you easily replace them.. 👍🍻

Many thanks for your nice videos and the useful information. How would you compare / rate this system against the Anvil Foundry?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers 4 жыл бұрын
The capacity is about the same, the basket on this system. Allows for a finer crush than the anvil. The clawhammer system has quite a bit more power than the foundry so heating times will be less. The clawhammer system is a bit more "modular" so you can replace an element or sensor if it goes bad. There are advantages on both sides of the argument. Price is a factor to consider too. Both systems will make great beer for sure. 👍🍻

I am considering switching from Robobrew to something different. Do you think the mesh basket prevents a “column” from flowing from top of grain bed through the grain bed as opposed to brau supply’s (and I guess even robobrew and grainfather for that matter) solid wall with porous bottom design, in turn reducing efficiency? With the clawhammer, have you noticed any improvement in mash efficiency with increased lautering rate/volume?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers
@ShortCircuitedBrewers 3 жыл бұрын
The system is designed as a full volume no sparge mash. You can sparge with it, but I wouldn't say the at the basket inherently is more efficient. What can be more efficient with the system is the ability to grind fiber and have a possibility if better conversion. I also think even if you're recirculating it's not a bad idea to stir the mash every 15 minutes or so. Long before we had the column type systems people were doing brewing a bag with just a bag which is very similar to this basket. I wouldn't expect much higher than 75% efficiency on average. 👍🍻
@jpcii
@jpcii 3 жыл бұрын
Short Circuited Brewers I agree with my Robobrew I find my efficiency best when I stir. With it, as long as I let it settle down for at least 10 minutes before I sparge and use the spigot to obtain a couple or 3 large aliquots to get the trash back on top of my grain bed before sparge my efficiency soars and wort is clear. I just like the idea of continual column motion and I think a solid wall probably helps if you do not plan to stir.

From the results I could not tell you for sure.. Lol I will say the way that the basket is designed, it won't hurt anything because you're not really filtering through the grain bed like other systems that have solid walls on the basket. Thank you for the video, I've been waiting to see how this came out. I'm making the change from 3 vessel propane to electric, and scaling up to 10 gal batches. I know this was a 5 gallon batch, but in your opinion, how does the Clawhammer System compare to the Spike SVBS? I've narrowed it down to those two, and clawhammer seems a few hundred cheaper and they throw in a chiller. Open to ideas if I should be seriously considering another brand. Thank you for your time and all the videos, very helpful.

The controllers are about the same. From a functionality standpoint. I would say, outside of a warranty period, the Spike controller is probably a little more repairable. If a PID goes bad, you can just swap it out with a new one. I don't think that's possible with the clawhammer supply system. The baskets are different. I am used to doing a sparge on single vessel systems. Neither of these are really meant for that. However, I think you probably could get away with doing a sparge easier on the spike system because of the way the basket is designed. The Spike system kettle definitely is higher quality construction, not that there's anything wrong with this one, just something to note. I think you can make great beer in either system, it comes down to your personal preference. Both of the companies have excellent customer service and are reputable in the home brewing market.
