If one listens to dermatologists, who follow the science, there is no standardized definition for “clean” makeup or skin care. Firstly chemicals that are proven to be harmful are not allowed in makeup and skin care. And not all products that contain chemicals are bad for us. Some are actually necessary to keep the makeup from spoiling or having bacterial or fungal growth. Dermatologists have seen many patients with eye infections from using mascaras that do not contain preservatives. Also many clean products contain essential oils which are horrible and irritating to the skin. Natural does not mean it’s good for us, whether it’s in our skin care and makeup or in over the counter medicinal supplements that we take. I love makeup and I use both “clean” and regular makeup. The thing that bothers me most is fragrance. My skin does fine, but many fragrances give me headaches. Thanks for taking the time to review this. You look beautiful as always.

@@AliAndreea people seem to be more and more aware of this fact so the clean beauty. For laymen who don't care much of makeup, I would reckon also only a handful of people actually believe the propaganda fully. Having said that, I end up with mostly brands that market themselves as clean but for a reason that's entirely unrelated. These brands happen to have been coming up with more innovative comfortable, easy to use formula with shades that actually work for my skintone and preferences. It was like before medium tan neutral warm olive skintone did not exist before. And now there are many well thought out and executed muddy shades in actually gorgeous formulas.

Clean beauty and skincare is a godsend for me & my clientele. I have clients that can’t even walk thru the laundry detergent aisle bc they are so sensitive to FRAGRANCE. If conventional products do not bother you, that is great-but their are tons of women out there that suffer…thyroid, cancer survivors, hormone issues-trust me as a professional-it’s a real thing.

I switched over to using mostly clean products for everything - makeup, skin, hair. Specifically, from one brand who I trust. They use natural, organic ingredients. The shelf life may be lower than other brands (because they use natural preservatives), but they thoroughly test and strive to innovate and are diligent about safety, cruelty-free, etc. There have been so many claims from so many companies over the years, it's very difficult as a consumer to know the difference. It would be great if there were more standards and companies were more willing to be forthcoming with information about what ingredients they use and how those ingredients interact with each other and for what purpose they are using those ingredients. Accountability and visibility is so important in building trust with consumers. I'm seeing a trend of companies listing their ingredients more; I like that trend! Some of these ingredients are cancer causing, some are tested on animals, some are very harsh on the body, and I'd like to know where/how these ingredients are sourced. As a consumer, I want to know all those things. That's not only a trend in the beauty industry, it seems like a trend in everything that we consume. Staying vocal and asking companies to strive to develop better products that work well, that are beautiful, that are good for our bodies, and that are good for our environment too. I think we can all agree on that.

I definitely look more carefully at ingredients after doing a biochemistry degree where I realised how much we simply don't know. Whether its about how different chemicals (synthetic or natural!) affect our bodies and I also realised how difficult it is to actually figure out which biochemical processes are being triggered by these chemicals. However, I agree that "Clean" is not regulated and doesn't mean anything in particular, I think we should still consider more carefully what we are adding to our bodies.

I honestly don't care about the "clean" label. What I'm looking for is the products that don't break me out, don't ruin my skin barrier and there is some proven benefit to using it. So no castor oil, talcum powder, other comedogenic, carcinogenic ingredients and a pH level that's about 5.5, except for acids which should be 3.5-4. The other bs words company claims like "natural" "organic" and now "clean" - do not care. "vegan" or "peta bunny labeled" is something I like, but only after fact checking on the internet, since once again the label on the packaging doesn't mean anything.

So many celebs bring out skincare and makeup and push the being “clean” hype whenever it’s actually necessary to have some preservatives to keep the products fungus free etc. PS I always adore your little out takes at the end…you’ve a wicked sense of humour and I love catching a glimpse of Baby Eden who is getting so big…such a beautiful little boy…just like his mama ❤❤

My top filters when looking for a good, high quality product are: cruelty-free (aka vegan) + no nasties + high quality. If they aren’t vegan I discard them immediately. I really appreciate this video not only because I was one of the people requesting it, but most importantly because I’ve been following and applying your tips for a very long time with my products and now I can fully relate! I also researched every single product I was interested in that you mentioned in many videos, just to make sure which ones were safe. This has spared me quite a bit of work! ☺️ Mulțu ❤

Hello Andreea, Thank you very much for this video! We would love to see more professional make-up Artists doing make-up with so-called "clean" products. For my part, I switched to natural cosmetics 5 years ago, I make most of the products myself (soap, deodorant, shampoo, make-up remover, face and body care creams and even some make-up products) and I use a lot of "pure" products like vegetable oils and hydrosols. The only products I buy are sun protection creams and some make-up products like foundation or lipsticks and of course, YES, a clean formula is a criterion for me, I always look at the INCI list from A to Z. I don't have particularly sensitive or reactive skin, but I am very concerned about whether the products contain ingredients that are harmful to health and the environment. The debate around "clean" or "not clean" is still surprisingly lively but one thing is certain, whether we want to hear it or not, in the INCI list of "conventional" cosmetics there are a multitude of controversial ingredients, some suspected to be endocrine disruptors or even potentially carcinogenic. For my part, instead of waiting for studies to confirm that these products are carcinogenic before stopping using them, I prefer to take the inverse road and stop using them now and wait for studies to prove that they are NOT carcinogenic. But we must not have any illusions because our body and our skin are definitely not supposed to assimilate products from petrochemicals. I know that organic makeup products have the reputation of not being as "effective" as conventional products, but in recent years brands have been able to develop and offer very good products, it would be very interesting to repeat this type of video. with a wider range of brands such as Madara, Ilia, Kosas, Vapour, Absolution, Kjaer Weis, Plume, RMS Beauty, Lily Lolo or Ere Perez. Thanks again and Warm regards from Spain 😘

A product being non-toxic and cruelty free is important to me. I understand the comments about all substances being chemicals (including water) but what most people are referring to are synthetic chemicals, quite a few which happen to be toxic. The argument is that if used in small enough quantities, it's not toxic. However, keep in mind that synthetic chemicals can be approved for use before enough research on long-term effects. I sometimes read research on this and have worked with toxicologists about how substances get approved for use. Look at butane as a recent example - it has been a known carcinogen well before the big product recall! Also, think about frequency and quantity of use, as well as other substances we are exposed to in our lives. And look at whether it bio-accumulates i.e., can your body remove it? There are so many high performing non-toxic (usually utilising 'natural' substances) cruelty free makeup, that if we have the means to buy it, then it's worth seriously looking into. Stay safe lovelies ☺️

I feel like this is the first time I’ve ever found a makeup artist who’s taste and personal preferences are identical to mine I can’t wait to binge watch more of your videos! Oh and RE: clean products, I used to love luxury products it was my favorite splurge especially skincare, but I have slowly been replacing my luxury items with clean, cruelty free skincare and makeup over the years. So please keep making videos like this 🙏🏼 or maybe a video where you use your favorite luxury items, but then you provide an alternate formula and/or technique to produce similar results. Say if you had a client that requested only clean products be used for example? Does that ever happen for you?

Ali, this looks like an every day make up anyone can do and it looks beautiful. As for “Clean” vs not, I think we should all be concerned with health and possible issues with anything that can increase risk of jeopardizing it. However, as many mentioned here, anything considered makeup added to our skin has been formulated from foreign substances and so I’m not going crazy about what I look for. I think we are getting more conscious about producing and testing as well as putting out products that we can feel safe with! All around great approach! Thank you for showing us the options!

Paying close attention to the ingredients in skincare, makeup and hair care is of huge importance to me , in decreasing my toxic load , as someone who is chronically ill. As well as, In general the companies within the clean beauty category also seem to care and follow guidelines around more sustainable packaging, cruelty free , vegan formulas, refill options and more fragrance free options, and ethical production practices , which are all important to me, and should be of more importance to the beauty industry as a whole.

I've read many of the comments defining "clean" and realized it's much like haircolor that claims to have natural ingredients that make it healthier for your hair. I have been a hair stylist for 46 years and never understood how the public fell for that. Because in order to cover Gray or do any kind of chemical changes to your hair the same chemicals are still present in the "good for your hair" color, otherwise it wouldn't work.

Stunning as usual! For me the most important ingredient preference in skincare or makeup is that a product be without fragrance and without chemical sunscreen. I finally realized that it is the fragrance and chemical sunscreen in makeup and skincare that causes my annoying little breakouts. I am very sensitive to them. I refuse to use any skincare or foundation with them. For example, I love how Chanel foundations look on me but if I wear them everyday I will break out from the fragrance. I wish all companies would ditch fragrance already.

I’ve been following you for at least a year and finally got around to purchasing a number of products you’d recommended. I must say I’m thrilled with each of them. Quite a while ago you had a video about cleansing your skin of makeup, the products you used including muslin cloths. I can’t find the link anywhere. I’d love for you to update this and bring it back for us. Also please continue showcasing skincare. Thank you for all the good work! A great channel.

Hi Ali Andreea: I’m a relatively new subscriber and I love your videos. I recently purchased your makeup tutorial. I watched the one on lips and while watching you do lips on a model offered a few tips it’s not how you put lipstick on yourself. I’d like to see that in more detail. You apply gorgeous colors to create full beautiful lips!

No such a thing as "clean beauty". I wish makeup artists would listen to dermatologists and people who have education to explain that all of this "natural", "clean" beauty is a big bs and a marketing scam. There are no regulations in place what "clean" beauty is, so brands call it what they want. Highly recommend to watch Dr. Dray here on youtube, she is a board certified dermatologists and explains why clean beauty is not a thing. Not talking about Andrea, but I stopped watching some youtubers for fear mongering about "bad", "not clean" ingredients (like parabens). Sure, some ingredients can cause contact dermatitis, but a lot of these ingredients can be in a "clean" formulas too. So, whats the point?

There's also Dr. Natalia Spierings and Dr. Shereen Idris as well. Except now Dr Idris has her pseudo skincare line with trendy ingredients which I find upsetting.

Here's my opinion, similar to Pap Pyone. Clean beauty, either skincare or makeup means only more expensive products with no particular advantage. The conclusion comes from dermatology community, along with natural ingredients in general. Some of these ingredients can be very harmful for the skin, by the way. The reason that this is so popular right now, although not as much as one year ago, is because beauty influencers are paid - very well paied - to help this marketing business and the concept is bought because of these "important" opinions. In the end, we pay the name of the brand and we're not giving our skin nothing that special. So, instaed of spending our money in this kind of products, perhaps it's more smart investing on going to a dermatologist or/and use ingredients and brands which are not luxurious but are effective and nowadays, thank God there are a lot more options. We don't need to spebd 100€ in a serum,200€ on essences because there"s no scientific data that showes effectiveness. This is all a huge business. Consuming business which, by the way, is really a shame when some people around the world don't have food.

An allergy to PPD in hair dye destroyed my immunity to many chemicals in beauty products. Fortunately, for daily use tinted moisturizer and tinted sunblock by La Roche Posay work really well. My perfume too has to be Buly or Creed or I get sick. Mascara is a struggle. Headaches, brain fog and vertigo, sometimes nausea are my red flags something is not formulated for me.

There are no standards for “clean beauty“. Also, that means that no preservatives are involved. That’s detrimental. There is quite a bit of misunderstanding when it comes to “clean beauty“.

Yes I absolutely try to stay away from talc in particular as it’s carcinogenic and is linked to cancer. I also look for cruelty free products. “Clean” can just mean less harmful chemicals and it’s more mindful of the skin. Mac has been known to use ingredients that cause dermatitis of the skin which is very irritating and causes breakouts.

To be honest. I live in Slovakia and we do not have many “clean” brands&products here, or not that I know of. Most of the brands you mention are not available here plus people here… well. Can’t really afford them, mostly. I would love to try some, but I also noticed in many “clean” products, they use essential oils or oils and I do not like that. But I’m intrigued in the products you mention… maybe one day :)

I am 64 and “clean makeup” was a Covergirl marketing line way before the current clean makeup hype. Think back to the late 70s through the 80s when Cheryl Tiegs and Christy Brinkley were Covergirl models. They were not marketing clean ingredients but a fresh look. Then and maybe still, Covergirl smelled like Noxzema cleansing cream (Noxzema “Chemical” Company was the parent company of Covergirl - interesting oxymoron). Now Covergirl has a dedicated “clean” line. I have used many non-clean products without the fear mongering back in the day and still do without ill effect. Cruelty free Is my only criteria.

For me the most important criteria are vegan and cruelty free. "Clean" formula goes after that, but if I find a product that meets all the requirements and at the same time stays on skin as a regular make-up, I'm utterly happy. Also, I would like if brands remembered about their product even after they are sold suggesting ways to return or recycle packaging easy and effectively.
