When done properly - cleaning, cooking and freezing game birds is a pretty simple process! This video shows how we clean and prepare ruffed grouse to eat, or store for a later date! These methods can be applied to all upland game birds, not just ruffed grouse.
If you have an easy recipe for cooking grouse, drop it below in a comment! Also, if there's anything upland related you want to see in the future, let us know!

Great video! I'm glad you skin your birds rather than simply breasting them and wasting the great leg meat. Gamebirds are precious, so I always try to use as much as possible. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy your content. 😀

That's how I was raised to do it, and my dad got me hooked on the dark meat of pheasant legs from a young age - so we always keep them!

Great stuff man! We love the way you handle your dogs and it’s nice to see someone else having fun in the grouse woods. I’ll give this Grouse Club Sandwich a try. Our kids always voting for grouse nuggets in our house.

Awesome! I am going to have to try that on pheasants one of these days. Would love to hear what you do with the leg and thigh meat!

It's great with pheasants! We've done it before with pheasants and have battered the meat and fried it, making it a 'crispy' sandwich vs just frying the meat like we did here. A lot of times with the thighs and legs we'll just roll them in flour and fry them. Most of the times if we cook a whole bird we'll slow cook it, then debone all of it and include it in a stew or roast style dish. Thanks for following along!

Nice video! Thanks for sharing. I’ve cleaned, frozen and prepared Grouse many ways over the past 40 years but I’m always open to new ideas. Love the “Grouse Club”! Been doing the nuggets, tenders too. I like to “sit” birds in the fridge for a couple days. If they are shot up I clean that up. Those two birds were really clean shot! What GA, loads and chokes are you using shooting over your dog? I don’t use a vacuum sealer but dry, wrap and double bag the birds and they last a year. Keep up the good work sharing your passion for Ruffed Grouse. It’s “The King” for a reason. Always challenging and enjoyable from field to table. 👍🏻

Thanks for following along Daren! We've done nuggets as well, they're awesome! I go back and forth between a 12 Gauge semi and 20 Gauge sxs. Throughout October and November I will shoot 7.5s with a IC choke. This time of year I'm shooting Mod and 6's. Some may argue it's overkill, but I like the range on some of the birds that get up a little farther out. The bird I cleaned was in picture perfect condition, not a BB in it, I made a head shot on that bird with my 12ga with a mod and 6's lol. Even I was surprised at how great of condition it was when cleaning it!

@@UplanderLifestyle Yes, the “magic BB”! Lol. I tend to agree. I use 20 SxS and O/U during Woodcock season. With mixed cover I’ll usually load 8s in the C and 7 1/2s in the IC. After that it’s 7-1/2 until the leaves are gone then I/M with 7 1/2 but I carry 6s with me depending on cover. Il grab the 12 with low brass I/M also. I’m dog less so the Doodle shots are close and so are the Grouse, when there is an actual shot. Not often. Bird counts are down this year in my coverts. My miles to flush / shots is way up. Good exercise but!… Been enjoying more of your vids and sharing them.

Good to hear man! We get our seasonings from a Meat store in northern MI by our cabin. They have some great meats and seasonings. I've tried finding it online but they just sell it in store. It is the Dublin General Store.

Absolutely, no reason to not have birds gutted out. Little pocket knife, with some clean water to give them a rinse. To good, of a great tasting bird to risk wasting, because of some shot in the gut.
@UplanderLifestyle

I've never had an issue with any game birds being left whole for several days. Even on ones that are slightly gut shot. If it's really bad I'll remove them, most of the time that's an extreme case.

@@UplanderLifestyle Yes! Game birds can be hung for several days. Your birds will be much better if you eviscerate them. Reason is to cool the bird down faster. The faster that’s done the better, and why it’s done in the field, most of the time. Buy yourself a bird knife, with a gut hook, great little knife. No one in the industry, would advocate leaving birds for days un-eviscerated. It’s not a good practice, and laziness, for something that takes less than a minute.
