After watching your video I grabbed my 60 year old Montgomery Ward 240/325 Watts soldering gun and worked over the tip. What a difference cleaning the tip properly makes. This old Ward's gun is now and incredible tool. I solder spliced two 10 gage solid copper wires together in about 15 seconds. This gun was dropped many years ago and big chunks of plastic are missing from the front and back. I formed some mild steel strips to bridge the big old hole and covered everything with Gorilla brand tape. I had a new gun all picked out on Amazon before watching your video. You saved me about $60. I really can't imagine a new one working any better than this old beat up gun.

Good video. I am glad you went over the difference between the larger gun vs the smaller gun and their connections.

I have four Weller soldering guns, of various ages, and all of them have different ways of attaching the tips. Ive always had problems with the tips making contact with the gun. In fact, many years ago, I worked at a car stereo/alarm shop and we ALL had that problem with our Weller guns. I can tighten the tip, solder a few connections, let the gun cool down for 10 minutes and have to loosen/tighten the tip again to make it work properly. I called Weller and spoke with an older gentleman, who had been there a long time. He told me that there’s no way around it. He said that they have been trying to solve that problem for many years. I told him that I would work on it. He told me that if I could solve the problem, to please let them know. I have tried plating the copper, high temp silicone grease, graphite, molybdenum disulfide and a few other things. I haven’t had much luck. The plating worked best, but I couldn’t get a thick enough layer with the process I was using. I may try a chrome plating shop in the future, but it’s going to be an expensive experiment. (I’ve already tried tungsten, nickel, tin and gold.) If you have the secret, please let me know! Thanks!

I Use A Weller Iron With Inter Changeable Heating Elements. I Never Had Any Trouble With The New Soldering Guns With The Screw Mount Tips. Cause Everytime I Buy Tips I Put The Spare Screws Away Untill I Need Them. As Far As The Nut Mount Tips I Never Have Any Trouble With Those Either. To Realy Clean A Soldering Tip I Use A Rotary Tool With A Wire Brush Wheel To Clean The Tip.

I keep the tip clean with Sal- Amoniac And wire brush the shank. As for the contact points jus loosen the nut and retighten it but do not over-tighten.

Hey. Does the fact of my soldering iron not having its light make it burn the tips out Fast? The bulb burend out and Im unsure if thats the deal or not. I only use the weller tips for it. and they burn apart as soon as its hot enough for the solder to swet.

Thanks for the tip! (see what I did there?) My grandfather's 8200 N came back to life after I cleaned up the tip feet.

my tips keep breaking right under the tip, same place every time. I had done about 40 connections with 10 gauge wire to 5mm bullets for ec5 connectors. Do they wear out that quick or am i doing something wrong?

I was looking for guidance on how you install the new tip in the old gun with the nuts on it. I have broken the first one off trying to bend the legs after sliding the nuts on, and it's now too short. I would think the slide in idea of the new one is a better idea, but it should be based on a compression fit using the old style nuts. Oh well.

I am trying for months to find those solid copper tips you have in many worldwide market places, but I only found the new silvery tips. They are expensive, and their lifetime is just a few hours. I remember those solid copper tips I had years ago, lasting for many months. Do you know where I can buy some of those traditional full copper tips ?

Would you be able to use a piece of wire hanger as a soldering gun tip?

No. Unless it's copper it won't conduct as much electricity and so it won't get as hot.
