Also watch Reinvented Toilet Expo: Sanitation Change-Makers Series - Mme Lena Tall Faye: • Reinvented Toilet Expo...
Clean water & sanitation affects 4 out of 10 people worldwide, about 2.6 billion people, negatively. When there is no reliable sanitary toilet available for people, they need to use anything they can find, which often leads to a bigger problem of diseases. These diseases are filling half the hospital beds in developing countries.
We need a toilet revolution--new clean water projects and ideas to help reduce disease and find new ways to turn crap into valuable stuff, like fuel, fertilizer, and freshwater. Projects like the reinvent the toilet challenge are a step in the right direction.

A really good idea. But I believe it would be really useful if they included two things (no pun intended) in the video: 1.- what are the requirements for the new toilet they are looking for. (maximum cost, minimum comfort, infrastructure limits, etc). 2.- How can we, as a public help (aside from donations).

For the Reinvent the Toilet Contest I am recommending the following: I would get three 5 gallon buckets. One for Pee, one for Poo & one with saw dust or dried leaves, rice husks, etc. I would also keep some home made seed soap handy so I can wash my hands after doing my business. Add a cup of saw dust to the container with the Poo to kill the odor. Nota Bene: create a compost ditch away from running water & dump the bucket with Poo & saw dust. Til regularly so it turns into healthy soil. The bucket with Pee should be sprinkled on the soil early in the morning. Pee has lots of nitrogen & is healthy for plants! : ) PS: Please share & help safe a life!!

Excellent Vid! And so true! The way we waste so much in disposing of our waste really stinks! We must learn to squeeze as much out of our resources as possible, even if it cramps our style! I hope to live to see the day when this serious problem is wiped clean from our 'to doo-doo' list. Hey, we could sponsor a post season college football classic: The Tidy Bowl!

@vikula1 What is funny is that if you are drinking municipal water than you are already drinking "that" crappy water!! It goes to the waste district that cleans the "waste" from the liquids, sends it through a couple of filters, and then right back into the drinking water system!!! Enjoy!
@Talosity
@Talosity 4 жыл бұрын
This is as simple as connecting a ultrasonic tank to the output of the toilet and water pumps. Of course implementing a UV lighting while the lid is down more logical also.. So in other words the “modern toilet” would simply be a two stage tank system, (1). Clearly being the top tank using existing laws of motion forcing water down for flushing and refilling (2). 2nd tank below for ultrasonic cleaning of the waste prior to emitting into the sewer system. And that’s how we live long and prosper 🖖

@Shatteredcraft Sanitation is, in fact, more important than food here. I'm sure you know the four basic human needs are air, water, food, and shelter, in that order. With poor sanitation, waste materials are actually getting into and severely polluting people's water supplies, to the point where massive disease outbreaks like cholera are spreading through the water supply. Unlike food, water is far too heavy and used too much to be sustainably trucked in.

If a kid in India can make solar panels out of human hair (cheap) and Dean Kamen can make a cheap water filtration system (he's got it planned), I'd imagine it would be a matter of distribution to a central point for processing.

@LoneSeraph2100 I would add that, back then, people were responding to an aesthetic distaste for poo, without any knowledge of the harmful bacteriological qualities. Similarly, many of the people whom this video is speaking about live in cultures where pooping still happens openly because it's not considered a shameful thing; on the other hand, shame was what first taught us to poop in flush toilets. The understanding that mismanaged poo could kill us came later.

That's ideal but prohibitively expensive for a lot of those places. Basic composting toilets (not this hi-tech stuff) will keep sewage out of the groundwater and the rivers where they get their drinking water from. I don't know why more people aren't recommending something like the humanure diy toilets.

Here’s how the urine-powered generator works, as explained by the blog on the makerfaireafrica.com website: • Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen. • The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, and then into a gas cylinder, which looks similar to the kind used for outdoor barbecue grills. • The gas cylinder pushes the filtered hydrogen into another cylinder that contains liquid borax, in order to remove moisture from the gas. Borax is a natural mineral, commonly used in laundry detergent. • The hydrogen is pushed into a power generator in the final step of the process. A big drawback is that hydrogen poses an explosion risk. But the girls used one-way valves throughout the device as a safety measure. The idea of using urine as fuel is not new. The girls have come up with a practical way to put the idea into action, though. Their method for using urine to power a generator is one the average household can appreciate. Power generators are used far more often in Africa than here, where they are relegated more to emergency use, as in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The Maker Faire Africa blog says power outages happen multiple times a day in Lagos, so all those who can afford a backup generator have one. Still, technology needs to evolve further before such a system is feasible, at least as far as applications like powering generators go. www.forbes.com/sites/matthewdepaula/2012/11/08/teens-create-a-way-to-use-urine-as-fuel/

@LoneSeraph2100 Ancient cities that had plumbing were advanced for their time. What you are saying is basically is if somewhere didn't have a tv, why are they bothering to watch crappy performance put on by the locals. They have no choice, there is no option, they can't get electricity, they can't afford the tv etc. How can you possibly think that this is bad. Also, it is pretty hard to do certain things when water is short and food is scarce and disease is all around.

One of the most beneficial things wealthy philanthropists could do for humanity would be to create a billion dollar prize for anyone who can find a cost effective way to desalinate sea water. (By "cost effective" I mean competitive with the watershed in temperate climates. Also, disposal of waste brine would have to be figured in.) Look at how much more land would become arable if we had this. They say that in the next century water will become more precious than oil.
