It's no secret that keeping your computers and other electronic goods clean and free of dust extends their lifespan. But, getting them clean and keeping them clean is another story. Compressed air is one solution but can be costly over time and annoying as the cans run out of air quickly, not to mention they are bad for the environment.
Enter the DataVac - an electronic blower that will simply BLAST all the dust, hair, fur, and other bits and pieces out of your PC or device. The best part? It's ESD (electrostatic discharge) safe and doesn't cost a fortune.

Touching the case if the case is just on a table won't ground you. Grounding is the charge returning to its source or to ground depending on situation. A case which is not connected to anything sitting on a table that is insulating it doesn't transfer a static charge anywhere.

Last time I did a job like this on a couple of PCs that were five years in service I had access to compressed air in a workshop. I had to be careful because the compressed air can blow small components off boards.

Touching the case doesn't work if the cord isn't in the wall, those pesky electrons still need to go somewhere. With the computer power off, the ground in the cord is still working just fine. If the carpet in your room creates static electricity, pull up the carpet corners and lay down a nice big square of aluminum foil under each. Very expensive anti-static carpet has, you guessed it, aluminum foil in the base. The floor is grounded, you just need to create a better collector for the carpet.

This is a common myth - it doesn't need to be plugged into the wall. You just need to touch your metal PC case every now and then (ideally bare metal with no paint on the surface).
@svenp2251
@svenp2251 3 жыл бұрын
@@CreatedTech it needs to be connected with a cable that goes to earth to offload your body charge.
@CreatedTech
@CreatedTech 3 жыл бұрын
@@svenp2251 No, it doesn't. if you're building up that much charge that it can't be dissipated by simply touching the metal case, you're doing something seriously wrong. By all means, plug the PSU power cable into the wall if you're afraid of ESD, but it's not necessary.
@manticore4952
@manticore4952 2 жыл бұрын
Having the cord in the wall isn't the right way to do it either. Use a proper ESD mat, wrist strap, gloves and bonding plug. ESD flooring works as well but the desk needs to be bonded too.
@magic_cfw
@magic_cfw Жыл бұрын
connecting the pc case to the wall makes the pc a true ground, as well as the discharge more likely to travel through the case and through the cable into earth. "grounding" by just touching the case will equalise the charge between you and the pc. this doesn't provide a "true" ground as there can be still static charge, but less likely for it to arc between you and the computer.

The nozzle on the thing is a bit big. It would be hard to get into the fins on the heatsinks, etc. Also, with modern fans I don't think there's any danger in spinning the fans backwards. The fans are, basically, free floating. The thing that determines the direction of their spin is the polarity of the contacts to the motor. There are no gears or anything that only spin properly in one direction. So there isn't anything that can be damaged by it spinning one way or the other.
@steve-ln6nq

wrong they act as generators and can input voltage back into your mother board or fry the diodes in the fans (I forget what their job is but I know you can fry them if you over spin the fan)

the TOUCHING THE CASE METHOD ONLY WORKS WHEN THE POWER CABLE WITH A GROUND IS PLUGGED IN at best all your doing when its unplugged is balancing the charge between you and the commuter components which will kind of prevent esd but there could still be a charge that you accidentally discharge against a surface when removing and setting down components the (the best LAZY anti esd method is rubbing your finger on the center screw of an outlet THATS WIRED CORRECTLY). AGAIN A STAND ALONE CASE IS NOT A GROUND 5:10

I think the Air will be totally fine in terms of dust. The Pro however will eventually get dusty so I'd recommend opening it up every 12-18 months (depending how dusty your area is) and giving it a quick clean.

the idea, as when dusting shelves in your home, is that you do it before it builds to the point where there will be a dust cloud. If it is that dirty you need to wipe it down with something and not just dust it with a blower.

@@alexiluffy216 it's good! It's pretty useful for non PC things as well, there's not a speck of dust anywhere near me lol. I've had it for about a year and I'd say it's pretty worth it! Leaf blowers are great for a lot of tasks, but they're pretty unwieldy for doing the smaller, electronic jobs. I've got a recording studio with lots of equipment in racks (that can't be taken outside, because everything is bolted and wired in). If I fire up my electric leaf blower in the studio, things can go flying in all directions. ;) You need to use the right tool for the job, and for some jobs, this is the right tool.

@@DonegalOverlanding LMAO. So your source is: "Just trust me bro"??? 5 seconds of Googling will show that ESD from vacuum cleaners (unless it's a special anti-static vacuum) is not a good thing for sensitive electrical components. Just because you did it and something didn't go wrong, doesn't mean it can't break your entire system in the future. If you don't believe me, go and post this absolute tripe on any PC forum and get ridiculed into oblivion. Do everyone a favor and don't spread this nonsense anywhere else.
