Great video. Thanks. On a separate thing, do you know where I can get hold of a snooker ball garage to check the diameter of a snooker ball. I saw one with holes where the correct ball went through but the wrong size ball didn’t

Hi Stephen Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately it's a no on the gauge, not seen one to be honest. You could try "The Snooker Forum" online as there are table fitters and guys that probably would have come across one.

Thin Green scotch brite pad is the best for me

Yeah there are many different preferences and it all depends on the finish of the shaft (oil, wax, lacquer etc) as to how to make is smooth again. Contrary to many other people in the trade, I use a damp cloth on the shaft and dry immediately (don't use it on the splices or butt end). I find it makes the shaft super smooth after a minute or so drying time. It does wear away at the oil but I oil the cue each year to counteract that and keep it feeling nice.

Hi I saw your comment again and thought I'd add another comment. You've probably found a scotch bright pad that works for you and they can work well in getting the grime and dirt off without damaging the cue. I noticed a similar pad on Ebay that has a bit if cloth wrapped round a pad which is sold as a cleaner using the same method. I bought some from various sources and what I would say is many were if a nice fine grit so skimmed the dirt/grime but I also came across a couple that were course enough to roughen the shaft and scratch a cue butt. If always try and test a cleaner first if possible and then stick to a make that works for you to save on any unwanted surprises!

Can you do a video on how to regrain an ash cue?

Hi Liam It's on my list. I'm mixing oils at the moment to find '"The one!" so to speak. Once I feel happy about the few oils I'm mixing I will do a series of videos of how to regrain, and re-oil a cue as a refurbishment.

Can you help me, I've developed chalk stains or the green stains from the cushions along the snooker table right down the cue shaft I clean it off regularly with cloths etc and it takes a lot off which come into the cloths however there's quite a few green stains I cannot remove off the cue although they're faint they're still there. What can I use???

Others may not agree with this but I use white spirit to clean heavy chalk marks off. What I would say is that if your cue is regularly oiled chalk marks come off pretty easily so a re-finnish might be worth considering.

@@thesnookercrazygroup3562 white spirit whatttttt surely that makes the cue become all 'woody' as in a texture feel. Is it safe to do that?? So I can use white spirit and then re oil the cue yes? :D

@@amarsbarr Generally (without me holding the cue that is), if you can't get the chalk out if the cue with a damp microfibre or one if the cue cleaning products you would probably be at a re graining / re oiling stage. If you don't feel the cue shaft is at that stage then try the "Sil Kleen Shaft and Ferrule Cleaner for Snooker and Pool Cues."

Do you soft sand your cue ?
@marclockley3229
@marclockley3229 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Grant The only tine I would soft sand or steel wool(0000 grade) to surface grime would be if I am going to apply a light coat of oil. Yiu yave to be careful nit to regularly reduce the actual wood diameter of the cue. I am talking to a player at the moment who has had a terrible season due to changing the thickness of his cue which has now changed how it plays.

I use to play for a poll team an one of the lads had a microfibre cloth an he put baby powder on the cloth then put it on the cue an it worked fairly well

Yes, heard of that. We used to have a guy that used talc. He would put it on the cue and his hands as he had sweaty hands. You could always tell he had been playing as there was always white marks on the table.

Spinning ur cue by ferrule with a damp cloth wears the wood down below your ferrule and baby wipes dry out the wood and remove the oils from the shaft
@thesnookercrazygroup3562
@thesnookercrazygroup3562 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Martyn The video is accepting the fact that the cue you are cleaning is maintained correctly with regular top ups of oil to protect the shaft as you would hope for but as we know, isn't the norm for many players. Maybe spinning the cue isn't the best terminology and maybe turning the cue is better; as you can see in the video the cue is turned. After doing this for method for 36 years I haven't worn a cue down yet below the ferrule and the cues are regularly treated to additional thin coats to top up the shaft. If I could add a few extra words then it would probably be don't choke the life out of the cue whilst doing it. I generally get to a table 4 times a week and the cue shaft is cleaned before every session. Cue wearing down below the ferrule are normally due to incorrect chalking of the cue so the chalk also touches this part of the wood. When a cue comes to me with this issue I always ask the player to chalk the cue in front of me and you can see it. Always worth expanding on a point though so thanks for the message.
