A short video showing how I clean a decent size quartz crystal cluster. First I soak it in Iron Out for a couple days and then I soak it in HCl for a couple more.

Good job on giving us on what to use for the first step on iron out& why. The second solution and why. It turned out really nice. Congratulations.

I just cleaned a whole batch...mine were heavily covered with the red oxide...I soaked mine in the "Iron Out" solution for two weeks...they are now crystal clear...pun intended...no iron oxide coloration at all...two or three days is not nearly enough time for heavily oxidized crystals...just keep check on them daily.

It did seem like it almost spread the color as opposed to cleaning it off. Still pretty though. Thank you for sharing your experience

in the same Iron Out or did you change out the water?
@barrybarber4924

@@michelleexley1 In the same...although I would recommend a plastic tray on the bottom for the crystals to sit on...the ones sitting directly touching the bottom tended to darken where they were touching the slur at the bottom. If raining during this time...cover it so as not to thin out the mix too much.

try using the works tollit bowl cleaner it works great and can remove a lot of the nasty brown color. I also found on some rocks I can take treat like you did then soak in bleach for a little while then rince off good and add back to the iron out. sometimes doing this will remove some of the brown and turn the left over into a more pretty yellow color and remove quite a bid more of the color from the stone. I my self for the most part tho treat all stones with the works tollit bowl cleaner it seems to actuley remove some of the cloudiness of rocks and bring out the color of some like amethyst after I treat it I like to wash it with a scrub brush and down dish soap them rince off good and let it soak in hot water till its cold then rince again. I noticed one day doing with with some stones then setting them in my windows with the sun hitting them can make coudyness go away some what and make brown fade a little and on amethyst it can make some stones fade a little while other like the stuff from brazil seemed to get darker and more shiny. might be me but people love them when I am dun cleaning them up.

Very helpful thank you. Just one question, would you mind telling me what the water/acid ratio was please? Cheers
@Puddin
@Puddin 3 жыл бұрын
Unless you have large amounts of build up the ratio doesn't matter all that much. You can add a little acid and wait a while or add a lot and wait less. Personally I'm patient so I just add a few splashes and wait a few days for it to do it's work.

How much iron out do you use ? Did you use the liquid or the powder ? Also what is a good way to get the calcium deposits off around the quartz to bring out all the quartz ? I started collecting geodes and would love to learn how to expose the quartz alone
@Puddin
@Puddin 3 жыл бұрын
In this vid I used about half a cup of iron out. As for removing calcium deposits, the hydrochloric acid I use here would work and if you don't mind waiting acetic acid (vinegar) would work too. I've got several buckets of uncracked geodes and at one point dropped a few into hydrochloric acid in an attempt to remove the outer layers leaving the quartz underneath. It really didn't turn out well for me. Hope you have better luck.

What dilution of HCl?
@Puddin
@Puddin Жыл бұрын
Hard to say for sure, 100ml perhaps added to the bowl used. It doesn't take too much and the exact amount isn't too important. It primarily makes a difference on how long it takes to dissolve the dirt

What would you recommend for a wine stain on a clear quartz?
@Puddin
@Puddin 3 жыл бұрын
As long as there isn't any calcite with the quartz then something as mild as acetic acid (vinegar) should be enough to take off a wine stain.
