My first job was working bar in the late 1960's and my boss had an Amazon 123GT. He was the sort of guy who shouldn't have run a bar as he would drink all the profits. During the evening, as he got progressively more drunk, he would brag about his Amazon and challenge any one listening to a road race. Thankfully most customers were too sensible to listen but over the course of a year or so, probably half a dozen accepted. Needless say, my boss in his Amazon won every time. Moreover, several of the customers never made it back, rolling over on some of the tight bends. Totally stupid and irresponsible behavior, of course, but it endeared me to the Amazon, which is why I drive one today.

I am 75 now and want to cry when I see a Volvo 122. I purchased a new 1966 Volvo 122S on January 23, 1966 at age 19. Purchase price including 2% New York State sales tax $2,652.00. It was replacing my 1957 444PV i had purchased for $300 a year earlier. Unfortunately I received a draft notice in December 1966 and headed off to basic January 4, 1967. I sold the Volvo before departing. A sad day. I figured I would be unable to afford the $80 monthly payments. I was wrong. The military pay was lousy but there were few places to spend money in the jungles of Vietnam. I eventually purchased new Volvos. 1976, 1979 & 1982. I found them to be too pricey as the years have rolled on. We rented a new XC90 in Sweden 2 summers ago. It was great for the first hour until the power steering pump crapped out. Hertz replaced it with a new XC60 Thanks for the video.. Oh yes. When I purchased the new Volvo in 1966 my friends owned GTOs, Olds 442s, Corvettes and 427 Fords. They mocked me... I was a trend setter. Screw them.

I'm really curious with what type of primer and paint Ant restores the old rusty parts. I have had so many helpful adives, but after picking a epoxy rust converter people told me it will rust within no-time. So some advice would be super super helpful.

How do you know you can reuse the springs? Is there a measurement that tells me the springs are "in spec" or not?
@beagle7622
@beagle7622 3 жыл бұрын
It’s highly unlikely that a spring will be out of spec. The spring is made with a specific steel specified by the spring manufacturer. It operates within the elastic limits which are specified. If the load exceeds the Ultimate Tensile Strength of the steel it will bend permanently . However car spring load would be nowhere near this load . There is a type of spring called a torsion bar which is a straight bar which you can see in the orange Volkswagen in this series. It works exactly the same way when the car goes across a bump the spring twists but always with a load that will not cause plastic deformation. The mathematics is quite easy, any first year mechanical engineering student can do the calculations. I hope that makes sense I have forgotten most of this stuff.

Visual check for excessive corrosion or cracks, as long as the car sits level on them you're good. If you wanted to be anal about it you could measure the ride height, if it's near enough the same as it left the factory then the spring rate hasn't changed and they haven't sagged

What happened to oiling/greasing new metal parts and giving rubber parts a bit of silicone oil before installation? It looks great with new parts installed, but what about 5 years from now? Eg.: While driving, the sway bar moves in its rubber bushings. A bit of silicone oil would prevent friction from degrading the rubber bushing and prevent the paint on the sway bar to be rubbed off. No paint = rust. Think ahead, please.
@TheTomco11
@TheTomco11 2 жыл бұрын
I thought you only greased polyurethane. rubber bushes aren't meant to move within the metal unlike poly bushes

He does the introduction, the searching and buying of the cars and then the selling of them. he also sources parts and occasionally gets involved here and there with some parts restoration, insomuch as he has a go at the odd job when he takes some parts to specialist repair shops. Oh, and the original idea for the program and its format was essentially his and he was instrumental in its early success with his efforts behind the scenes.

That depends on the prep work involved and how many coats and whether or not clear lacquer was used ect, ect. just because none of that was shown here, it doesn't mean it didn't happen. I spray pained many of my Spitfire's suspension parts and also painted some with Hammerite and a brush. that was over 11 years ago and it is all still holding up very well.
