Revisiting using two sponge-balls on a rope for cleaning out the boom pipes on our 40 meter and smaller concrete pumps. We go through step by step process of exactly what is needed as well as building/assembling this setup on our shop. Full am detailed process.

The red and white reflective lines on the rear of the boom when folded are supposed to angle downward toward the side of the pump it is safe to pass on. 1:50

I wouldn’t be confident that my pipes were clean sucking just one sponge on a boom of that size, unless I was pulling back a lot of water in front of it, which would then lead to concerns with rock-packing in the pipeline. Just my experience on larger machines with our concrete around here. Appreciate you watching and commenting 🙏🙏🙏

Nice content, as always. It’s always nice to know, the why! Behind the theories. Years ago, you were told, this is how you do it/ it’s done like this/do it this way! The older gen would never explain the, why! Breaking down the ,why, keeps everyone thinking the process. And ultimately creates multiple ways to achieve the same outcome. It’s always good practice to try other methods of what isn’t your normal routine/ I’m only talking about wash out procedures, not your set up routines. It’s good to have a mitt full of options to apply to each job specific.

I could not agree with you more Art. Especially with todays generation. The “don’t ask, just do” way in which we were trained doesn’t resonate so well with todays labour force 😂😂😂

I’ve been cleaning my pipes like this about a year now without the rope. 6in sponge, fill the 90 with water, followed by a 5in sponge. Idled down and volume as low as it will go. Comes back so nice and smooth every time, and as soon as I see the water bubble up in the hopper I stop it. Schwing 32,34,36,39, and I’ve been fortunate to never cut one in half. 2 is ALWAYS BETTER THAN 1

Yeah I just run a hard ball then a soft one with water in between on the schwing 31 haven't cut one yet. I think the rock valve is larger than most s tubes that might be the reason they dont cut as bad because of the loss of vacuum once you hit the hopper transition 90

@@joelmcdonald4297 I had always wondered how that would work with a rock-valve versus the S-tube. Always nice to be able to incorporate that hard sponge-ball into the routine.

@Canadian Concrete Pumper Yeah I still listen for the ocean haha actually showed my boss and two other operators how to do it, they were always pipe beaters, but since I got that pump I don't wanna scratch the paint as much as I can can anyway

@@joelmcdonald4297 it’s honestly just a much better way of doing it. Listening at the elbow for progression of the sponge allows us to track where it’s at in the boom….. and it just sounds super cool! 😂😂😂

I think im gonna give this a try on our 24meter pumi once i get a chance to operate it again (currently mainly operating 38meter) we use sponge water sponge on every machine but sometimes gotten the balls stuck when sucking back the second ball too fast, not leaving enough time for the first ball to come all the way back to the stopper. But i guess the trick here is the water between not allowing the sponges to collide, just my theory. I've been hesitant to try new stuff because things can do sideways real quick when working around a material that can go from a liquid-like state to a rock solid material in the matter of minutes in the worst case scenario :D

I think you’ll like the sponge-rope-sponge arrangement. I used it for many years without any issues sucking them back.

Help!!! So I was taught to pour a full bucket of water into the tip (No reducer no hose). Then put a 5 inch hardball. I lift the boom to chest height and listen and wait for gurgling noise wich lets me know the ball has made it back.. should I be using 2 sponges? Also I ran a 32 Schwin and am now running a 38 alliance and have never cut or lost a sponge . I just want to know if my pipes are getting cleaned properly with just one sponge or should I use 2? Also soft or hard when using 2.. thank you!

@@Magoo1881 So there’s just far too many variables (mix design being the biggest) which will dictate if your pipes are getting cleaned sufficiently or not. Best way to check is pop the 45 degree elbow between the 6-5 reducer and the deck-pipe. Shine a flashlight up in there and see what it looks like. I can only speak to our mixes here locally, but sucking back on sponge with water in front of it probably cleans sufficiently 98% of the time (that’s still two times in a hundred that the pipes may not be as clean as needed). Sponge-water-sponge gets them clean 99.9% of the time for us. The only time we’ve really seen buildup is if the procedure has not been followed correctly (not enough water between the two sponges and/or sucking back the second sponge too quickly). We had one project with a micro-topping mix that also required us to suck back a go-devil. Preferred method is one hard sponge with absolutely no water in front of it sucked back and then followed up with a second sponge of soft or medium density with 5 gallons water in front of it and pulled back about 20-30 percent volume. Hope this helps. My best advice is if what you’ve been doing has been working for you, don’t mess with it.

I run A alliance 41 4 roll and fold, i was just wonder how fast should i be pulling back the sponge rope sponge back (how much rpm and pumping speed)

My standard rule is the same speed which I prime out at (one stroke every 5-7 seconds).

I can’t see why not. I myself have never been a fan of pulling a ball back through the tip-hose, but if it’s been working for you I would think the two sponges on a rope pulled back through the hose should also work just fine.

Been using a single sponge with water in front and it’s been working really good as long as you don’t put to much water. I made the balls on a rope to try today. I’ll let you know how it goes lol

no wrong...but you are over engineering it....i use 2 balls....1st 5" hard ball.... 5 speed on dial minimum regardless of slump...ear on the end hose...when you hear the gurgle stop.....6" ball is next ....wet.. .dial on 2......ear on the end hear the gurgle...stop.. 9 months was longest run...

On this particular pump, because of the smaller discharge outlet it will pull the first sponge into the hopper as the second sponge and accompanying water reach the back elbow. Are you running an S-tube, or rock-valve style pump?

Unless perhaps you’re not adding water in front of the second ball? It’s the flush of water which carries the first ball through the S-tube.

yes i do add about 4 itres of water mix with slow willie for off site washing...and bleeds up the hopper.... there is no wrong way of doing things...Concrete pumping theory applies to each specific job.....i enjoy watching your videos and we can all learn from each other....keep at it👍
