I show the procedure for cleaning PCV valve (replacement of PCV valve) on the 2003 - 2007 Honda Accord. This easy car engine tune up will help keep your engine in top shape. This procedure applies to K24A engines found in some years of Honda Element and Odysseys 2003 - 2006. The principle of cleaning is the same in most cars with a combustion engine although the procedure for removal may differ slightly. I also demonstrate how to test a PCV valve. A bad PCV valve or PCV valve failure will cause oil burn/consumption, oil leaks, sludge and will also cause lean codes like P0171 or P0174. A lot of car manufacturers do not have a recommended interval for replacing the PCV valve, however, this is something that should be done on a schedule for optimum performance. I make a recommendation in the video.

@@DIYAutoworksNG thanks, yeah i wanted a good dependable work vehicle so I bought a well maintained 03 Honda Accord. That plastic cruise control linkage on the throttle body breaks on those things all the time. Mine broke so I thought I was going to have to remove the throttle body to repair it but it turns out that Dorman makes a replacement kit, 977-100.

Does the pcv valve work without the hose on IT?

The PCV valve will work. However there will be excessive oil consumption. Also venting the hot blow-by gasses underhood doesn't sound safe.

Can it be the reason of white smoke?

White smoke is usually from coolant except you are saying white smoke with a bluish tint. In that case, it's possible.

It can be replaced without an error as part of preventive maintenance. Different consensus on when to replace, but 60 - 100k miles sounds okay, except if your manufacturer lists a specific mileage.

My 05 Accord goes through about 4 quarts a week, no oil leaks, but I have recently developed a misfire problem, I got a lean misfire code so I replaced the plugs check the coils, I had a break in my intake hose I replaced that, and a new air filter. It's still missing so my next step is to check and clean the EGR valve and ports. I'm really hoping that's the problem. If not I have to get an engine compression test to make sure my valves aren't blown, fingers crossed. Any advice or prior experience with this problem would be much appreciated, I am not a mechanic

What mileage do you cover a week? When last did you change/clean your PCV valve? Have you scanned the car?

You mean 4 quarts in 200miles? That's a lot. Have you checked your radiator? Does it have any oil contamination? A PCV should definitely be among the first maintenance items for oil burn in a high mileage car.

A little under 2 quarts usually tops it off if I do it every 5 to 6 days, i hve a feeling the cars motor cld be toast. . 235, 000 miles.

That's still a lot for just 200 miles. It must be smoking at the back. Or, no? Clean/replace the pcv though. PCV usually last about 100k miles so it way past its limit if you never cleaned or changed it.

Please I definitely know now that my pcv valve is bad because all the symptoms just recently started on my Honda Accord 2005 2.4L 4 cylinder engine. Please where can I buy this in Nigeria as it seems difficult to get a new one. I checked online but it can only be shipped from abroad and also most of the sites I saw has bad customer reviews about this particular product. Thanks in advance.

Many of the symptoms can also be caused by other tune up items, though you can start from the PCV valve, especially if you have never cleaned it. I really don't have a contact in Nigeria for getting a brand new one. Have you tried cleaning it extensively with carb cleaner? Does it rattle? If it still rattles you may still use it.

I really haven't checked if it still rattles, but since I got the car back in 2017 it hasn't been cleaned out or changed, also I wouldn't wanna believe it's ever been changed since manufacture. Anyway, I'll just change it since it's not that expensive thereby eliminating that possibility of it being responsible for the oil consumption/ seal leakages and poor fuel economy problem. Despite all these, the engine has got good power, runs and idle pretty fine and hardly gives off a "check engine" light except some minor unrelated issue which are immediately taken care of. I believe if I change the PCV it'll fix the problem, but till then, I can't be so sure.

@@hectordavis1900 hi. Actually, I got one and had it changed. The issues I was having before were oil leaks (from the top area seals also), and excessive oil burn. My 5ltr oil burns down to low-guage in 3months. However, after changing it, the oil leaks stopped, especially the top area, it stopped completely. But unfortunately, the oil burn continued, no effect, same rate. Well, I guess I'll have to change my oil brand and try another one as that may be the issue. If it doesn't solve the problem, I'll just live with it.

@@francisbasseyamana6878 ok thank you for the info. Currently I haven’t had any oil leaks yet just oil burns. I’ve had the car for 3years now, it recently started smoking heavily. I want to replace the pcv valve but funny enough I haven’t found it here in port harcourt. So could you let me know where you bought yours, the cost and possibly the persons contact so I could buy from them as well. Thanks.

No. WD-40 is not meant for breaking down carbon deposits.

Yes. No vacuum problems except if the ends of the PCV hose are worn/cracked. No software reset is required.

You could always disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes. Then the ECU will have to relearn.

It is possible although more from a vacuum leak on the PCV hose as against a clogged PCV valve. What car is it? P0172 is pointing to a rich condition which can result from vacuum leaks. So apart from the PCV hose, you will need to check other vacuum hoses. In summary, a P0172 can be caused by: - Faulty or dirty MAF sensor (in equipped vehicles) - Fuel delivery issue - Vacuum leaks Since you say its intermittent, you may want to try cleaning your injectors first using a high quality cleaner. I have also seen poor quality petrol give this code.

Hmmmm it's same accord 2003. You have a point with the fuel though. I have tried to refuel from only one gas station for a while now I have just changed my intake air hose soo hopefully it'll solve it. Because i noticed multiple cracks and a major crack which i patched before had opened up unknowingly to me. I'll also clean the pcv but if it's faulty won't it throw a CEL?

The air intake replacement may solve it. A failing PCV will need to reach a certain threshold before a CEL is thrown.

@@hectordavis1900 I went to advanced auto parts. You can check your local auto part stores or amazon, ebay etc. Just make sure you find the right one for your car and how to install it. In most cars is easy to replace. I am definitely not letting this happen again. That single valve is the most destructive piece on any modern car. I'll be changing it more often regardless of condition. Sometimes they last forever, sometimes they don't last at all. Cheap insurance...

Usually means worn piston rings allowing blowby gases into the sump. You can clean the PCV valve though.

@@DIYAutoworksNG Thanks. Was wondering because Google found me this... "It is likely caused by blow-by, be sure the oil level is not over full as well. It is a possibility the PCV Valve is not working properly and causing the pressure buildup as well, replace the PCV Valve first. This also may be caused by Blow-by that is caused by broken or stuck lower compression rings in turn causing the pressure to build up inside the engine, if replacing the PCV Valves doesn't stop it then get some top engine cleaner and remove all spark plugs and poor the whole can of fluid inside the spark plug holes equal amount to each cylinder, let it sit over night (spark plugs left out).

I don't think OEM is 10 bucks. Last time I went with a Beck and Arnely part, it broke while torquing it down to spec. Hadn't even reached the rated torque! Was lucky the broken part on the block wasn't too stubborn to get out. Since that experience, I only do OEM PCV valves.
