Sergers are not a must have… but are a huge time saver and make your garments quality look better and last longer!
I am showing you how I maintenance my Serger, Clean, Re-Thread & Calibrate the threads.
There are more then 1 way to care for your machines. I am showing you how I take care of mine to maintain the life & quality of its use. I also show a few tips on calibrating your threads tension. EVERY machine is different so please read your owners manual for your settings but this will can offer some new techniques that may help you with your machine!
HUGE SIDE NOTE: Before you comment about the canned air I use in this video & other. I have verified the use of compressed air or canned air with several licensed machine maintenance companies and manufactures! It is safe & generally used by most machine repair men, IF DONE PROPERLY!!! I am in NO way saying to stick the spout in the machine parts to blow! DO NOT DO THAT. But you can blow out the front of the machine with air. Odds are your machine maintenance man does it do & you have NO idea lol. However if you are not comfortable doing this than just don't.
You can use a vacuum or just a dust brush. Please keep negative comments to your self. I am just showing my method that works for me. Thanks for your positive feedback!!!

Thank you for this video. Two additional things I do: Before removing or replacing the needles, I always put a small square of white fleece under the presser foot, to keep from dropping them accidentally into the abyss, or rolling around if I drop them. Also, I use the canned air all around every nook and cranny of the threading paths, tension dials, etc. Happy serging!

Hi RevDonnaH! The scrap of fleece over your needle plate is a BRILLIANT idea! Hate to admit, have lost my fair share of needles down in the abyss lol. I know there are a LOT of people that do not agree with canned air but, every machine repair shop I have ever gone to, uses comprised air to do just that, Get all the dust & pesky lint, fibers etc out of the cracks before getting into the repair! And as long as you are not pointing the spout directly into the gears inside the machine it is perfectly fine for your machines! And speeds up the cleaning process so you can get back to sewing. Sorry but I have always read not to use compressed air as it forces the lint into the mechanism inside and to the back of the machine.

I have read that before too but honestly... I have been using the same cleaning methods shown in this video on all of my machines for over 20 years. About 5 years ago somehow the foot lift mechanism broke on the inside of one of my Sergers. I decided to open my machine as far as I could to see if I could identify the part and find a replacement part online (which I don't recommend unless you are educated enough to do so). And while I was in there re-grease and clean. Upon opening the machine and removing all the plastic shell I find a SPOTLESS inside! No lint bunnies or lint built up on the greased parts, Clean! They REALLY built an amazing machine that is very well protected on the inside.... So this leads me to believe that warning is not 100% accurate. I only use the air method lightly, I am not forcing my spout directly into the machine and as I show in my video, I use a vacuum on high to pull more of the bulky lint out. BUT, if this is something you are not comfortable with then just don't use that method :) I only show how I am comfortable doing things because that is what has worked for me through the yeas & all of my machines run & preform like new. I do hope some of my other information or methods are helpful for you though. Thank you for bringing this up!

Excellent Brother 1043-D Serger tutorial! I've searched and searched and looked at several tutorials and this is the best one that's detailed and easy to understand and follow. Thank you. I now have faith in my serging capabilities. I've had my serger for about 3 years and got frustrated trying to operate and thread it. I'm now anxious to get started with it again.

Thank you so much for this helpful video and your pleasant reassuring voice and giggles. Received my Serger after it was shipped. While it was already threaded it ruffled every time I tried a different fabric. Brand new Serger user so I was like holy crap! You saved the day!!! Hi Denise! Thank you for watching, I am glad my tips helped you out. I remember my first serger was SO frustrating. This was before KZfaq became popular like it is today. So all of my trials and errors came from experience. I had to just try twisting knobs and tensions and fabrics and kept notes of what did what and mounted them on the wall behind my serger so I could remember everything till I got really used to my Serger. I am glad my advice and tips are useful and can help take out some of the guess work for others that are starting out with these amazing machines, they really do help you projects look better and more fun! What other kinds of Serger info would you like to see in the future?

I thoroughly appreciate your video, thank you for taking the time to show the steps. I've always wanted a serger but could not get one, then last year hubby picks one up at a flea market for $15, it had rust on the metal areas, no accessories or manual. I first had it serviced to determine IF it would work well enough to consider using it, and they said it worked perfectly fine. So now I'm waiting for the manual to arrive, as well as thread cone holders, spool tops, and oil. I really like that contraption you used to loosen the needle holder... you said it was from Lowes and I see it is a Husky... was that expensive, it's neet because you have such a sizeable item to hold on to (good for arthritic hands :). Sorry to ramble... thanks for your video, it helped me a LOT!! :)

I’m very grateful that you showed so much in this video. One thing is (I’ve been told by sewing machine repair techs and electricians) static is not safe for electronics and swiffer cloths pick up lint/dirt with static. Just an FYI.

Thank you Mimi. I am learning that there is a LOT of tabu stuff around sewing machines and how to clean them and care for them online. And everybody has their own opinions on "rights and wrongs" lol. I personally learned how to clean my machines from a Certified Technician . I have had 1 tech tell me this too about the swiffer cloths, while many others say that is an old wives tale... My best advice is if you feel it is safe for you to do it, and have researched it or been told by a Cert. Tech that it is ok, then do it! If you feel it is not safe, don't! Always better safe than sorry. (and I think this would more apply to a computerized sewing machine as they have more sophisticated, delicate workings) I have been a professional seamstress for over 20 years and have cared for my home machines more than I have EVER had to take them to a shop! (In fact I have only had to take 2 machines to a shop and it was a faulty computer board on one & Bad motor on the other) Im just offering up my own experiences and advice, I realize it is not for everyone & I am 100% Okay with that! lol Thank you so much for watching and commenting & all always Happy stitching!

I have a really old all metal gears all metal machine probably set up for 10 years gunked up with I bet it was WD-40. My husband told me not a lot of people know this but WD-40 can clean it and decrease it if it's gummed up it's not preferred though it is a dead gum mess LOL. I wish that my machine was as simple as yours with the cleanup thanks for sharing this it does help!

Very thorough video. I recently got a serger same model given to me as the neighbor was throwing it out! No manual nothing. I see how your video what a relief. thank you. I got those long tweezers at dollar tree in a set in the car section. It’s true about thread getting old. My neighbor gave me all the thread and it kept snapping fraying well.. it has a musty smell it was cotton not polyester and old thread 🧵 is a no no.👍thanks

I have the same server so this video is excellent for me. Now I know how often to clean the machine, change the needles (which I have never done), oil and retread. You are very clear and to the point.I only use my serger on seams. It would be helpful if you could do a video on the side dials ( on the left hand side of the machine) and tension numbers ..... I simply do not understand :( Anyways thank you again Sandra in freezing London

I own the Brother DZ1234 and found your video easy to follow, especially with close ups. The wheel is hard to move. I'm tempted to oil it but don't want to ruin anything. : ! What do you suggest?

Hi Estrella! The best thing to do is to turn your power off, remove the needles and thread. Turn hand wheel toward the back of the machine to break the machine loose from the tight spot. Now try to turn the hand wheel toward the front of the machine. Repeat steps to see if this fixes the problem. If this does not fix your machine, you may need to take it to your service tech (might be something mechanical). I would not spray it with oil! Your wheel is too close to your motor and not a normal piece you are supposed to oil! Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting and subscribing!

Great video! Just got a serger for Mother’s Day. Quick question, how often should one change the needles on a serger.... I’m not sure I’ve ever changed the needle on my sewing machine

Fantastic Mother's Day gift :) You should change your needles at the beginning of a new project. However with my sergers, sometimes I don't use them everyday & sometimes it is just for a small stitch project. Rule of thumb: try cleaning, oiling & change needles once a week. If use my serger throughout the week with various projects I wont change the needles unless it is a big all day project. If your machine is just sitting for a week just be sure to cover it so lint and debris does not get into the machine. AND.... You should prob change your sewing machine needles lol. I change my regular needles per project cause I am not always using the same fabrics. Be sure to check out the other videos I have on this serger! They may come in helpful too. Enjoy!

Hi Matthew! Not crazy at all! Honestly it sounds like you missed a step in threading your machine! You're welcome! And that is fantastic, you will love this Serger, it is a handy machine and makes projects look so neat and professional. It really depends on how often you use it and what types of materials you are sewing with. For instance if you are sewing basic cottons and only once or twice a week you will want to keep the dust cover on it and clean and oil about every 3 weeks to month. If you are using specialty fabrics like fur or some stretch fabrics (that shed or cause a lot of lint, you will see around the blade) you should sweep and clean after each use to keep from build up. Please check out my other videos on this machine as well! I go through a lot like calibrating for different fabrics etc. Thanks again & Happy stitching!

This machine should come with 4 small wheel like caps that you can slide on the cone holder that will allow you to use a "regular thread". You may want to put a mesh tube over your spools so they don't unravel like crazy if it is a specialty thread. And you can either match your thread to what you are sewing or just use black or white. In a crazy costume ship I only change it if it is a drastic difference in color or specialty color. (IE: if I have soft blue, I just sew with white) That is entirely up to you and what you prefer. Also you can use all 4 threads or 3!

My presser lifting lever has some slight play in it on my new brother. Is it supposed to have?

Yes! One of mine has more play in the lever than the other one but both have a little bit. This is not a problem unless it is a lot. Then you may need to take it in to get looked at! Hope this helps. Happy Stitching!

Do you remove the throat plate? I remove mine because there tends to be a ton of lint in there.

You can! Usually I do but didn't in this video. Generally when you use the vacuum it will get the lint from underneath the plate from the suction. But yes it is always a good idea to remove the plate as well as the foot to clean. :)

Hi Allison! That is NOT a dumb question al all! In general all sewing machines need their "metal to metal" or moving parts oiled. Any joints or parts that move need Oil TLC :) All machines should come with a manual and should have info on oiling. But on the chance that you don't have it or can't find it, just open your machine door & turn your handle back and forth, and if it moves, oil it. Don't over oil. Oil should not fling off the machine when you run it. It should be close if not the same oiling process as the 1034D. I have not used that Serger yet so I can not say exactly. But most sergers are similar when it comes to moving parts. Thank you for checking out my channel & commenting! Happy Stitching!

Yes, I actually have 2 of the same machine! It is very worth the money and more. It offers easy cleaning and oiling and the instructions on threading are very clearly marked on the inside of the machine. I would highly suggest this machine for Beginners to Advanced sewing. I have had both my machines for over 8 years and never had a problem with either of them as far as timing or mechanical problems. I do have 2 other videos on this serger too, check my newest vids :)

Can I use the Zoom Spout Lily White Lubricant instead of the Zoom Spout Oiler to oil my Brother 1034D?

Great question Jami! You can choose between natural, synthetic oils made from petrochemicals like mineral oils to lubricate your machine. The Lily White Lubricant will work great with your machine, It has no color, highly-pure which makes it ideal for textile machines. :)

how often do you need to oil it thank you

Hi Lee! It really does depend on how often you use your machine. Keeping your moving metal parts clean from lint and fibers is important. If the lint builds up on top of the oil it can cause problems with the machine not preforming 100%. Rule of thumb: If you serge every day for hours, cleaning it out frequently is important. Typically, you will need to oil your machine every 10 hours of actual serging time (pedal down. Not necessarily in the same day) Also, any machine that has been sitting unused for two months of longer needs to be re-oiled. Your serger should run with a smooth humming sound, if it doesn't then it needs oil. Keep your machine covered when not in use. If you open the door of your serger and there is a layer of lint, brush it away. If it looks like the lint is sticking to the metal parts then you need to clean and oil good.

I use a combination of "Zoom Spout, Sewing Machine Oiler" You can find this at Joann's or through Wawak.... I think they still sell it :) And I use a Silicone Lubricant spray by "Max Pro" Just be sure the Silicone spray you check that it is safe on plastics. :)

My upper and lower needles touch sometimes, and the needles hit the presser foot when it’s in the up position.

Hi Lisa! Your needles should Never touch. Sounds like you may be using the wrong needles. Make sure the needles are compatible with your machine. If they touch your plate when in the up position it is definitely the wrong needle! Hope this helps!

Lisa! Without actually seeing your set up and knowing more info, I am kind of guessing at what "Might" be the problem. This could be a number of things from simple set up oversight to timing. If this is something that has just popped up and you have not changed the needles you use etc. You may want to take your machine to a Machine repair man as they would be able to identify the actual issue & fix it. There aren't many videos on sewing with Sergers or maintaining them, and I was terrified about buying one. I am so thankful that you have put these Series on the Brother 1034D up on KZfaq! I've been following along for a week now. You are the reason I bought this brand and model which I just picked up yesterday. I figure that if I can't fix it, I shouldn't own it. There are too many relics sitting in the house that should really find a new home. I love the way you get inside the machine with a Camera and show us what is really going on inside. The CD discs that come with the machine showing how to set up are just sad. A little 3 x 3 Video Screen just doesn't do it for me. May I ask if you purchased additional Pressure Feet with your machine? If so, could you do a video on how you are using them? xoxo

Yes, these machines can be very intimidating to own and operate for sure! If I can take just a tiny bit of fear out of the equation, I am MORE then happy to! I had to figure them out very young on my own lol so I know how scary they can be. There are several feet options for your serger, I have not yet felt the need for the additional feet for this serger as I do mostly costume sewing not fashion or quilting. A lot of the additional attachments I can get done quicker with my straight stitch sewing machine. I have used them before in industrial sewing jobs. What feet are you thinking of using? @@SiQ_Clothing Such great costumes... I was intrigued when I saw that you used a heavy gauge vinyl on the serger. My old Singer can do that. but only with the Walking Foot. I get why now... That foot creates a second Feed Dog, where the Serger has two Feed Dogs. So cool! Which serger foot are you using to join Satin and Lace? Oh... Do you use the Barrito Method anywhere in your costumes? Thanks SiQ

I can use my normal foot (that comes standard on the Brother 1034D) with pretty much any fabric I put through the machine! Honestly I don't change it! lol The big kicker is your foot pressure!!! Watch my video "Sewing Finger Gussets on Gloves" tutorial and at min marker 25:30 ish I explain the pressure of your foot! I show how it applies to the serger as well. That is one way that will make the difference of putting heavy weigh vs light weight fabric through your Serger. I try & give crazy helpful tips in all of my videos :) I use the burrito method on my men's shirts that I make for the upper back yolk part.... But I don't thing I use it for much else.

I still keep the Superman costume he wore at the last conversion he went to, hanging on the back of his bedroom door. I wash it once a year and rehang it there. I think you get it? LOL

So you mentioned that you would touch on how to help with the dust on the spools of thread? Are there any tips you have for that?

Yes, I actually make fabric slip covers for all of my machines. Since I live in Vegas it is VERY dusty here! I made fabric coverings to slip over my machines. Kinda like the Toaster Cozy lol. Sounds crazy but it works perfect.

Hi Monica! It really depends on how often you use it and what type of fabrics you are serging. If you are using your machine daily and lets say sewing cotton fabrics (cause a lot of fiber dust) I would clean your serger every 2 weeks. If you are only using it a few times a week than maybe once a month. Rule of thumb for me is if I open the front door of my serger and there is a lot of fibers covering the mechanical parts I clean it. I was told never to use canned air for any kind of sewing machines or sergers. Because the pushed air pushed dust inside your inner workings of your machine and jams your machine.
