Well today is apparently the national CRT plastic cleaning day over at the States.

Caps seem like the biggest target to go after considering the dimming occurred right before your eyes. So see if there's a cap replacement kit online to do it (kinda like you can get for gaming cabinets).

Almost certainly needs a recap.

You could also just retouch the chips and dings. At least in 2018 there was a guy on fleaBay that sold re-touch paint pens with the IBM paint code.

`This was my first PC monitor, My dad took it and a 286 from a skip outside his offices in the early 90s, He took home 4. I was 12 and it took me weeks, but I got one working... that was my machine until I lept to a 486.

I got a coupled of variety packs and they've come in very handy! :) I have so many pieces of stereo equipment (mostly) that have been marred by screws and whatnot from the thing sitting on top of them. Wish I had found them sooner! :/

My past self would like to remind you: Earlier DOS versions use less RAM and may get you your 590 KBytes. DOS 5.0 is a little new for this machine. :)

You wouldn't have seen it brighter if the CRT itself was worn out. Most likely some caps warmed up from your use and their ESR went way out of spec. Definitely just get in there and look for bad caps visually and find which caps are related to the issues you're seeing in the schematic.

Definitely caps. As the machine warms up the caps will change values. This causes all sorts of strange issues like brightness.

Speaking of nasty grooves, when are you going to start the LGR Synth channel?

If you plan on repainting it I think you should sand all the surfaces before painting and don't forget to apply some sort of grease removing stuff so the paint sticks better. 8:10 - I think you can replace that connector, there are still metal D-SUB shells out there, or at least you can replace the missing screw in that original connector shell from a new shell. Too free up some memory, prevent the machine from loading the CDROM driver :) I like clean white restored plastic, not long ago I built a UV LED strip "chamber" that runs on 12V, sprayed the inside of a box with chrome paint to reflect more light and stuck 2 mirrors on the bottom and lid too. I can retrobrite stuff in 24 hours and since it's closed it doesn't damage anything in my room and don't need good weather for retrobriting. I did some old PC speakers and a couple of front bezels of floppy and CDROM drives. It just feels better to look at them :) I'm planning to do my Amiga 500 soon too.

It was the same monitor I have started to learn about PCs back in 1994... So nice to see one restored.

(15:51) Those little plastic razor blades are awesome for getting stuff off without marring the surface! I actually got one after you showed it before and use it a LOT! :) For those not in the know, it's a Titan Plastic Razor Scraper. You can get one plus a pack of 25 replacement blades for a little over 8 bucks on Amazon. :)

I had a neat monochrome "color" monitor in the 80s. It was only color in that you could press a button and select white, green, or amber monochrome modes.

I would guess the capacitors for the PSU are probably dryer than a carcass in the desert. Probably worth replacing those first if you are comfortable working inside a CRT with high voltages. You can get a cheap ESR tester off eBay if you want to check the individual capacitors ESR reading against an ESR chart just to see how knackered each one is🖥️🖥️🖥️

If you want to disable an item in autoexec.bat, you could always REM out the line instead of deleting the line. :)

Reminds me of when I worked at Kmart in the late 2000s and we were still using a similar monitor for our inventory system and it was obvious nobody ever cleaned it, sat in a hot warehouse for 20 something years getting poked at with filthy hands.

I had this monitor back in 1991. Was a hand-me-down, but my first computer monitor as a kid.

Goal in life: find somebody who cares about you with the same passion Clint takes care of his retro stuff. Weird things come to one's mind after watching 10+ minutes of high speed scrubs.

I have one huge IBM CRT left, had it since the 90's, it's the size of a TV, in perfect working order. One day I will make use of it again!

Nothing more relaxing than drinking a mate and watching you clean a CRT.

It seems it CRT month on retro tech channels, David has his landfill Apple CRT, Adrian was working on a trashy CRT last week and now you are dealing with a CRT :)

I used to have one of these at home, got it for free from my old job back then. I loved it! Great to see this model again.

Watching two videos of guys cleaning monitors is mentally relaxing.

If you want to avoid painting the whole thing, there are paint kits you can get for colour matching. There is definitely a bit of a learning curve, but with practise you can touch things up and even match textures to an extent. Definitely a skill worth developing if you care about restoring stuff.

Reminds me of what happened to a similar IBM monitor Tech Tangents was working on. One of the color channels just kept getting dimmer and dimmer until a cap blew.

Watching this made me actually clean my own laptop screen....for a change!

I had a nice ibm crt back in 1999 that I got from a local small computer store. I traded an ast pc for it and the monitor was awesome. It was used by Ford.

Sounds like the voltage regulator for the crt heater is going out of spec after warming up. If it's unable to maintain the tube temp, it will cause the monitor to dim. That isn't something a hobbyist would be poking around in there to fix, though.

Instant trip to the past! The 5154 was the monitor on the first computer I saved up for and bought myself (at 13). It was a scrounged-together system. IBM monitor. Generic case labeled by a local PC shop (I don't even remember which one at this point). 286 SX chip. MFM hard drives... ohh, yeah! Manually park them heads, baby!

I have an old IBM VGA monitor just a few years newer than that thing and a lot of the adjustments are potentiometers that are mostly a paint to get to. That means adjusting them while the thing is running. Not for the faint of heart! LOL

you need to replace the transistor. When transistor ages it looses gain when it gets warm. Same thing happened to me once before most likely this is the power portion of the circuit (not signal transistors). So check transistors with high current the ones with more than 100mA. It will be easy to find because they usually have a slight burn around the PCB,

yeah that definitely seems like something that could be capacitors going bad, but I'm not super sure. High-voltage AC is dark magic.

It's plastic so you could probably fill the gouges with putty like people use in plastic models. Then sand the spots down a bit and paint over them.

One of the things from the 80s and 90s I don´t miss are CRTs. Need lots of space, have a bad picture and consuming way too much energy. Only advance was, that my cats loved to sleep on top of them, because it was warm up there. Try that with a flatscreen. ^^

Everything leads back to capacitors. I've noticed that at times too. I had a Zenith Supersport SX (Crap machine, despite the 386 and VGA capabilities), and everything seemed to come back to full brightness when I changed the capacitors.

I think I've reached the point where I'll just watch anything you upload, Clint.

Oh no, alcohol-soluble paint! That's actually why my Nintendo doesn't have the 1 and 2 labels on the controller ports anymore. I was cleaning the poor little thing up, making it a bit less grungy and scuffed. Cleanin' dirt off with alcohol. Take a paper towel, swipe across the controller port section, and the paper towel comes away with two bright red streaks on it.

Pretty sure it's the phosphorous layer. The tube may suffer from some oxidization from bad vacuum during production but those are very rare, and if there were a leak it wouldn't work at all by now.

When you speed up the video the ambient sound reminds me of Cheetah speed on The Sims.

I'd do caps and look for heat marks on the board to find anything failing in a fire starting way.

Looks like you'll be replacing capacitors soon! I managed to repair mine after it let off the magical smoke, but it only reliably works in CGA mode until it warms up, then EGA works fine (I have it connected to my 5155 with a modified IBM EGA card that allows the internal monitor to still work when in CGA mode - a small program changes the mode). I have a few more capacitors to replace to fix that issue. I created 3D printed feet for this monitor (because of course I did), but the replacements you have look like a really good fit!
