As a matter of good bee yard hygiene it might be advisable to collect and haul-out the debris from a dead-out bottom board. Then fire up the propane torch and give the bb a good scorching. Just a thought.

Hello, last week I had bees I feed them. This week I just checked on them the hive had dead bees on the bottom board and the others were gone. There was 2 bees Ali e in the hive. When I looked at 2 of the frames I can see baby bees forming will they die now. Also there is mold on the bottom board and side walls of the hive box

I am so sorry to hear that. It sounds like the adult bees absconded. They might have moved to another location, like in a tree cavity or your neighbor's barbecue unit. There was something about their hive that they did not like, like a sprinkler hitting it every morning, skunks, lawnmower vibration, the smell of the hive, or any other reason the bees used to decide they wanted to move. Sounds like the equipment was getting wet and that could be part of the reason. It's hard to know why they left. I hope you can figure out some possible reasons, fix them, and try again.

if you find a hive wiped out in january should you freeze the frames till spring or leave it ?

There are two reasons why you would freeze frames. First, to prevent honey from crystalizing. Second, to use the freezer as a pest-tight place. Is there honey in the colony? If so, extract it now so the mice don't get it. If you don't need to do that, you don't have to freeze the frames and can leave them outside until spring.

Can you tell me what AFB spores look like please, and is there any other evidence that you can see of AFB? Thankyou!

You're not looking for the spores even if you were, you wouldn't see them, they're microscopic. You're looking for the putrid pupae/larvae, specifically the roping, gooey mess that AFB leaves behind. If the larvae/pupae we're infected by AFB, you should incinerate the entire box.

So sad losing our bees! It's important to learn how and why they died and learn from our mistakes. Hopefully I have a safe and death free winter here in Canada. Fly maggots usually don't attack a hive. We do see larvae from wax moths fairly often in dead, overwintered hives. Wax moths like dark, warm storage places and are super gross, leaving webs and wood damage everywhere.

Mites are parasites on the bees. When their host dies, they die too.

We use deep middle bar frames to support the new comb. It makes the comb just the right size in a deep frame to cut 4x4 comb.

This is the cleanest dead hive I have ever seen. No wax moth, no burr comb, No black comb, even the frames are looking less than a year old.
