Those are very fascinating little collets, especially after seeing people using big ER-series stuff. I've only recently gotten into trying Evapo-Rust, and want to compare a bit to a product we have here called CLR, which is more geared to household cleaning. Need to experiment a bit as I have some old tools that have some rust that I don't want to wire wheel off. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Everett, I do think a lot of people rush straight for the Evaporust or wire wheel and it is not always needed... I hope your experimenting goes well. Take care. Paul,,

Here in the UK they have to change the law to make the lockdown happen... It is valid from now until the 31-March-21. Clearly we don't have the same population of the US but over 1,000 people dies of COVID yesterday... all very sad. Take care Paul,,

About a year ago I clean several 3AT small collets [very rusty ] that I got on ebay...in a harbor freight vibratory shaker, using plastic media and a few drops of dish soap came out clean

@@TheKnacklersWorkshop Hi Paul, flash rusting is fast... As the name implies. I suggest you use wd40 or even Canola oil for now just to avoid flash rusting... Later you can wipe it off and apply some machine grade oil.

Nice one Paul. Those collets have a new lease of life now and once you get a dial indicator on them in the lathe, it'll be easy to weed out any inaccurate ones. Light oil would be a good thing for the collets, at least until a better idea comes along :) I just made a rack for my 5C collets for the tool grinder. Cheers, Craig

@@TheKnacklersWorkshop I didn't film the collet rack no - it was a very basic build, just some stepped holes in a thick board. I will try to remember and show it in the next odds and ends video.

Hi Paul, glad to see you back for 2021! I've always had good luck protecting drill bits, end mills, and tap & die sets with a light wipe of WD-40, as others have noted. Silicone spray offers some light protection and does not attract chips, but dissipates quickly. Keeping everything stored in a toolbox drawer with desiccant packs works for me too in a very humid climate. Someday I hope to have a nice set of small collets for the Unimat, after I get the CNC conversion done ...

Hello Rich, I was tempted to use WD-40 but thought I would ask all the viewer for there thoughts. As the collets are in my home at the moment the temperature is quite stable. I plan to have most of my tools in boxes I will use desiccant packs in each... Take care Paul,,

I believe there used to be an ultrasonic cleaning solution that left some sort of lubrication on the cleaned parts. Maybe try Cousins website here in the UK.

Hi Paul, looks like you have as much luck with that evaporust as I do, I think it only works if you live in the states for some bizarre reason (must be our crappy climate)! I would dip them in WD40 and poly bag them individually, then back in the rack, they will last forever like this. Cheers, Jon

Hello Paul, it’s Paul ur W.V. Buddy. Yes I’m safe and well thank for asking in ur video. Hope ur safe and well. It’s been a minute since I’ve talked to ya. Been busy with thanksgiving, hunting, Christmas. But I’m wondering if you ever seen a Jacobs chuck model 4165. I think it’s a collet chuck( found it in some old stuff my grandpa had and he’s been gone since 91). Looks like drill chuck but no hole or teeth for chuck key. It threads together and has 3 jaw drill type jaws in it. And the good thing is it fits my dB 200. M-12 threads on back. It kinda look like ur e collet chuck a little smaller and has 3 jaw things in it instead of collet. Like it’s a variable fit type deal if that make any sense. Thanks. Stay safe ur W.V. Buddy

It usually takes about two hours when I use Evaporust. Never run Evaporust in an ultrasonic bath with heat, as it will turn your metal jet black all over., or so I have heard. Like the others have said, WD 40 and sealed bags would be great. Keep Knackling!

Hi Paul, Good idea cleaning the collets, I ought to clean mine too as I'm sure it would be good practice every so often. Ive been trying to do a little work with my watchmakers attachment on the unimat lately. Ive come across a problem which I half expected I'd encounter as this is not a dedicated watchmakers lathe. I was tring to repivot a clock wheel as the end had snapped off. To my dismay, the drill bit would not align with the existing pivot on the end of my wheel where I wanted to drill into. It was very slightly off which caused the very tiny drill bit to snap. Do you know if there is any form of aligning that can be made on these unimats in order to get a true dead center. They say the mark of a good watchmakers lathe is being able to hold a razor blade between 2 sharp points. Thats certainly not the case with my lathe Great video, Keep them coming Johnny

Hi Johnny, It is a little tricky to get alignment... sorry my project is so slow moving that I have not get there yet... You need to adjust the headstock to try and align it. there is a chap called Saar who has a channel called Smallathe and he recently did a video on alignment, which might help... Take care. Paul,,

Not a watchmaker, but I would probably apply a non-gumming light oil to keep them from rusting. This is great info, since I have many old 3PN, 4PN, and 5PN P&W collets to clean. Am planning on trying Evaporust in a sealed container, floating in the midst of a water bath in my ultrasonic cleaner.

With regards to the ones you feel might be too damaged to use. Are they viable to be repourposed/resized? I scrounged up a set of ZZ collets some time back that are extremely rusty, I have toyed with the idea of resizing them and making a custom collet chuck (maybe some day in the distant future )
@TheKnacklersWorkshop

Hi Craig, The issue that I have with some of the collets is mainly external damage, the keyway slot and the contact surface with the collet holder... As they are so small I will hang onto them just in case I think of a cool use for them. Take care Paul,,

G’day Paul. Looks like you have a good selection of collets, did you get all the sizes you need? Looks like the auto focus decided not to cooperate with you, maybe don’t shoot over a sink with tools similar colour as sink (note to self) I bought a die last year and it also had a lead in on both sides I don’t know why. Cheers Peter
@TheKnacklersWorkshop
@TheKnacklersWorkshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Peter, Not sure about the sizes on the collets... I think I have some sensible sizes to learn how to use them. Thanks for the tip on focusing, hopefully I won't make that mistake again. The die was a bit annoying, was not that cheap so I expected more. Take care Paul,,
