Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 are considered some of the best video games in the modern era. Through it's complex storytelling, interesting characters, and open world dynamics, Red Dead Redemption is a near perfect game. But what makes a game like Red Dead Redemption so great is not only a great hero, but an amazing villain like Dutch. Dutch is a near perfect villain in Red Dead Redemption, but what makes him so great?

I played RDR2 without having played RDR1, I didn’t know Dutch was the villain. I loved Dutch at first, and despised him by the end, just as intended. Just a perfectly written character.

Same. I knew absolutely nothing about the story of RDR1 before playing RDR2 and it's still incredible to me that the writers could write a character then 8 years later, write that same character in a prequel that both expands on the character and connects seamlessly to how that character was originally portrayed.

In the first game, Dutch worked because he was the last remnant of outlaw culture refusing to die. In RDR2, he was a leader unable to see that his plans were getting too reckless AND that his culture was dying out. That makes Dutch sympathetic even when he made amoral decisions.

The best villains of all time are not really villains. They’re just people. People like everyone else thinking that they are correct and everyone else is wrong. Dutch is great because between two games we get to see both what he thinks and what others think of him. We see his shift in ideology and methods. We see people who agree with him and people who disagree. This all combines to give us a believable person we can somewhat identify with. If you can’t identify with the villain at all, it just seems cheesy and cliche like a cartoon. When there is too much lazy effort put into a villain, such as giving them an artificial tragedy to justify their actions, it breaks down as well. Dutch is built up more slowly and isn’t given any cheap writing tropes to force us to care. He just simply is who he is.

It's not hard to understand why people follow Dutch. He's insanely courageous, leads from the front and never asks anyone to do anything he wouldn't do himself. Plus, there's the reassurance that he always has a plan, even if he's lying, you can rest easy knowing even the worst situation is in good hands. There are times in the story where I would follow Dutch into Hell. It's brilliantly written and performed to create a genuinely inspirational leader that is also the villain.

I like to think Dutch’s downfall was partially responsible for Arthur changing for the better, realising that the path of the gang life really was wrong. Arthur without TB wasn’t HORRIBLE, he just was someone who could arguably be considered “bad” whilst he shows his positive qualities (like Dutch). With Dutch losing these qualities, Arthur saw more of what they all really were and arrived to die as better man, redeeming himself. Dutch is the perfect showing of the parallel of Arthur throughout the story, both men travel along opposite ends of the scale

I always thought that Arthur's death brought home to him how he himself had destroyed his gang. He was smart and savvy enough to know exactly what kind of person Micah was, but as his self-confidence began to flag, and the gang started doubting him (which had started before the beginning of the game) Micah's flattery became like a narcotic he couldn't give up. And just like with addiction, he needed more and more of it, even as his dependence on it eroded his judgement, which caused the gang's confidence to diminish further and further. It was only when he realized that he had lost everything that he realized the cause; Micah. It was losing Arthur that made him open his eyes, and realize what a fool he'd been to trust Micah over Arthur, a fool to pose that question in the first place. It was that question that allowed Micah to destroy everything he built.

Because he doesn't feel like a villain. To this day I still remember his early game self and consider him a good guy, then remember what he did. I like how Arthur says "Revenge is a fools game" yet everything Dutch does is for revenge. He's mad at the Braithwraites for somewhat killing his father, he's mad at the times that are changing, he's mad at civilization, he wants revenge for it all. But deep inside he's scared. He's scared of the change, having everything taken from him growing up. So it's obvious that he doesn't want the gang to split up doing anything possible to keep it together.

Finally, a video that perfectly articulates just how complex and layered Dutch is as a character. Arthur and John are obviously fascinating characters as well but Dutch seriously has to be the most meticulously crafted character I've seen in a video game. Everything they expand on in RDR2 further compliments the events of RDR1 and you can tell that these games were written by masters of that craft who TRULY care about the stories they tell, down to the finest detail. The writers at Rockstar managed to balance all of these aspects on a knife without missing a single beat and it's honestly amazing. And that just goes for Dutch. We haven't even factored in all of the other characters that were expertly written. What an accomplishment, truly.

One of my favourite questions to ponder every time I play through this masterpiece is this: does Dutch undergo a real transformation from caring leader to maniacal madman, or was he truly this selfish and dishonest the whole time? On my first playthrough Dutch definitely had me convinced and I trusted his intentions. But like Rains Fall says, people don't change, they just become their true selves. Did Dutch do a 180, or did he just mask off by the end of the game?
@CaseyAvalon
@CaseyAvalon Жыл бұрын
I think his mask just was too hard to keep on. Like Arthur told John, "we ain't the ones who changed". He just showed them his true self - but they still felt live and loyalty towards him.
@aimlessarrow532

@@CaseyAvalon I'm on roughly my tenth playthrough and just for the first time saw the camp scene where Micah goes to Dutch full of sycophantic praise. I thought "okay this is Micah manipulating Dutch and how he starts worming his way in". But if you ask Dutch about it afterwards he says that he know what Micah was doing and that Micah needs to be watched. He's definitely not delusional on some level, he has an awareness of other people that makes him more the manipulator than the manipulated. I get that Arthur and John feel betrayed, but of course they would. Arthur does change throughout the story, as does John. They just don't see it in themselves. Perhaps there was a time when all of them would have been loyal to Dutch no matter what. When they realise who Dutch really is, do they realise because they recognise the change in him, or do they simply see him in a new light?

@@aimlessarrow532 the beauty of this game and its ending. So much is left to player interpretation. The theatre of the mind. Personally, I feel Dutch's mask broke under the pressure and he just quit fighting his "nature". There is also a line in Chapter 3 (Clemens Point camp) where you go fishing with him and Hosea. Upon arrival to camp Dutch says "I know I...I mean WE are going to be ok." I see that moment as the first real crack in his mask. Edit: I love this game so much I've played it almost daily since 2018. Everytime I finish the story I immediately start it over.
@jocatorejenerico
@jocatorejenerico Жыл бұрын
Imo, considering how many years the gang survived, it's unlikely that noone noticed his mask before. I mean, RDR2 wasn't the first time they had to deal with tough situations, but before 1899 Dutch seemed to be always considered by everyone a great leader. We also have to consider that his mind wasn't healthy, I think he began to go mad years before 1899, as Arthur says in the balloon mission. He has always been selfish and narcisisstic, but I totally disagree with the fact he just used his gang to get glory and honor, he cared for them but then started to see everyone as his enemy and became more and more paranoic. So, yeah, he was a shi**y person in many ways, but if he had someone that really knew how to help him, maybe he would have repented and turned good, unlike Micah that seems totally rotten.

Much like the other gang members, Dutch was not just a villain. He was human; filled with flaws, ideology and pride in what he believed was right. RDR2 tells the realistic story of how the era of the Wild West came to an end, as society around simply had enough. Dutch wanted something society didn't; he wanted freedom, yet society gave away freedom for safety and order. Objectively, agent Milton (and later agent Ross) was the true heroes if these games, as they gave society law and order. They did what society wanted, but as we don't get to see their personal life and story, we simply view them as villains over Dutch and his gang.
@rottensquid
@rottensquid Жыл бұрын
But I think Dutch's notion of freedom was fundamentally self-centered. After all, his freedom to rob the bank took away, say, your freedom to keep your money. What's twisted is that Dutch basically wants the same thing as Leviticus Cornwall, but Cornwall comes from money, so he was able to get it on a larger scale. They say two types of people laugh at the law, those who break it, and those who make it. Powerful capitalists like Cornwall have all the same philosophies about their freedom as Dutch, but while Dutch gets his freedom by defying the law, Cornwall gets it by buying lawmakers off. So Dutch is a wanted man, and Cornwall is a captain of industry. But in both cases, their quest for freedom isn't about freedom for everyone, just for themselves, to do whatever they please, and take whatever they want. And the Cornwalls of the world always win, because they game the system instead of defying it.

He is the perfect villain. He finds the unwanted and unloved, and gives them the role of family - helps them. Then they do his bidding. I can relate, as many can, because we have all had someone we loved who didn't love us purely. It was simply a transaction to them. And it hurts.

When you look at his actions he is clearly a villain yet in the heat of the moment it is easy for the audience to believe that their is some sort of nobility in what they are doing. Arthur eventually are enough of Dutch's 'plans' go wrong realizes that the lifestyle Dutch wants to live isn't realistic anymore and that Dutch is travelling down the wrong path. Unfortunately by the time Arthur realizes it his fate is already sealed and he pays the ultimate price for his sins.

What makes him fascinating is how he clearly wants nothing to do with anyone else but still tries to be a leader among savages. In the end he was a man who constantly fought himself but was too proud to admit that he was wrong.

i’d say that if you’ve played Red Dead Redemption 1, he wasn’t really a good twist villain. but if RDR2 was your first Red Dead, he was an immaculate twist villain. even if you’ve played the first game, he was still a really great villain.

He's a textbook sociopathic narcissist. It's amazing how they crafted the control and abuse. I always see people saying "Dutch ain't so bad. After all he taught John and Arthur to read." Yeah.... so he always had something to hold over their head.

micah was the better villain simply because he had less nuance and he was more of a pure antagonist, but that's just my opinion.

Weirdly enough I didn’t trust Dutch from the GET GO. He was TOO charming, I knew something was up. Then I grew to love his character. Then I grew to despise the man he’s become/been all along, although I still love the character from a story perspective and not a practical perspective.

But... is Dutch van der Linde a villain? I mean, Arthur... my Arthur... did some fucked up things, you know...
@aimlessarrow532

Could it be argued that Dutch van der Linde is the protagonist of RDR2? It is kinda his story. Sure, we see events from the perspective of Arthur and John, but Dutch is the one who drives the story, his fall from "grace" is central to the plot. He's the one with a clear mission right from the start, it's his actions that dictate the events and actions of others. Arthur is the player character from a gameplay perspective, but from a narrative perspective this is Dutch's story. There's something of the Shakespearian tragic figure in him, the theatricality and and inevitability of his decline feels so genuine. He's not a character we feel sympathy for in the end, but it's interesting to portray the central figure of the story that way.

Only if he followed his own words, "vengeance is an idiot's game"...I feel he got pressured when Arthur was getting the team to be against him. That got him to act weird and even leave those who had doubts to die so he can lead the rest. He had a plan, and his plan needed the gang to fully trust him to survive. Blood was gonna be spilled either way.

For me, the trolley station and failed bank job in Saint Denis is what really sent Dutch over the edge. Up until that point, Dutch had complete faith in his ability to not only keep the gang together but to lead them to "paradise". When the trolley station job turned out to be a setup, you could just tell how furious Dutch was. It's like for the first time, Dutch's faith had not only failed him but betrayed him. Then with the bank job, Dutch lost Hosea, his oldest friend, as well as Lenny and they were forced to abandon everything and go on the run with their tails tucked between their legs. After that, It was all just downhill from there.
