Cleft Grafting M111 Rootstocks

Cleft grafting apple scions on 2yr. old M111 rootstock. I prefer to whip graft, but the diameter of the stock wouldn't allow for it. I'll show follow-ups for better or worse.
M111 has a tendency to form burr knots and should be grafted low so that most of the stock can be buried. Borers love burr knots.

Thanks for the comment. I buy that tape at a local box store. It's a gardening "tie" tape that I assume is available in many locations. It is not grafting tape, per say. It does, however, work just fine for that purpose. Many trees I buy are grafted using electrical tape.

Someday you will have to take an orchard walk with your CJ cam. It could be very interesting! I think I will hold off on grafting. I really hard freeze --which we still might get-- might kill a young graft. I usually graft in early May. This being April 14, I have a few weeks!

It's the only scion doing much of anything so far. I couldn't get CJ to hold the camera.

I prefer using reverse saddle grafts when doing this. It provides far more cambium contact and it makes a much nicer, cleaner looking result, it's also stronger. I use chip or bud grafts on.stone fruits, especially with peaches.

I read in interview, Union in MM111 should be at not more than 2 inches from ground. Is it true ?

Do you have to put the scion on the edge like that? Would the graft take if you put it bullseye in the middle?
