Composer: Muzio Clementi
Artists: Costantino Mastroprimiano (fortepiano)
The final volume of Brilliant Classics’ acclaimed Clementi series, this release is dedicated to the composer’s last and most mature works for pianoforte: the Sonatas Opp. 40, 46 and 50, and the 12 Monferrinas Op.49.
The works embrace a period of around 20 years and were a major landmark within Clementi’s output. Slow introductions abound, and although Opp. 40 and 50 were composed separately, it is highly likely that the latter was intended as a sequel to the former because of their shared stylistic detail. From Op.40 No.1’s formal experimentation to the quasi-orchestral writing of Op.50 No.3, the compilation also includes various homages - most notably Op.46, whose high level of virtuosity comprises a fitting tribute to the great pianist Friedrich Kalkbrenner.
Maestro Costantino Mastroprimiano is once again our guide, creating an absorbing programme that effectively encapsulates the achievements of Clementi’s distinguished career. His consummate performances provide a fitting end to the series, one that confirms the Classical composer’s status as among the greatest innovators of the keyboard.

Thank you for this wonderful set of sonatas. There seems to be a mistake in the listing of works, not only here but on the other platforms where this recording can be listened to. The work listed as Sonata in D Op. 40 No. 3 at 01:04:31, 01:05:45, 01:13:42 & 01:21:36, is the Sonata in B-flat major Op. 46. That does not detract from these beautiful pieces of music!

hello? My name is Jeongmin Lee! A few days ago, I asked in a comment what the name of the piano was! I asked this because after listening to this KZfaq audio, the piano and tone I normally hear seemed unique and different! I want to try playing on this piano in the future. So I will ask you the name of this piano.

I can't say I'm correct for certain, but after playing Op.40 No.2, I found that seems to be in 2 Movements rather than one. The end of the 2nd is marked by a double bar attacca and the theme for the 3rd is directly linked to the 2nd. The tempo primo in the 3rd mvt is also the theme of the 2nd mvt. However I have heard people refer to this piece as having 2 and 3 movements, so I can't be sure what Clementi's intentions were. Still a delight to hear this recording on a clementi piano!

hello? My name is Jeongmin Lee and I live in Korea. There's something I'd like to ask! This is a sound source played at a 432HZ frequency, unlike the 440HZ frequency! But the piano isn't a Steinway, Yamaha, or Kawai. What kind of piano is it? Please give me your due diligence!

Hello? My name is Jeongmin Lee, who lives in Korea. There is one thing I want to ask you. When you listen to classical music, some have lower frequency than the standard, and some have higher frequency. When I hear it, I feel at peace! This frequency!... Can you tell me what HZ tuning this is based on?! In reality, on average, how many HZ do you use as a standard? I don't know exactly, but I've heard that 440HZ was used around 1955 and 442HZ was used in 1990... Anyway, I like that frequency on KZfaq so much that I have to boil the music based on that frequency!

Mastroprimiano plays the fortepiano beautifully and for once I see its merits and appropriateness: delicate, lithe, witty and even at times mournful.

It’s a fortepiano i.e. an early form of piano, like what Clementi would have played and composed this music for. It has a variety of differences in construction that result in the sound differences you mentioned.
