Lanigan was such a great host he could even make this kid look good. Edited for time.

I'm living in another country at the moment. I grew up in Cleveland, and I miss John Lanigan and the Channel 43 WUAB Prize Movie. I remember tuning in to watch the Prize Movie on hot, sunny, summer afternoons when the temperature hit above 90. We had an air conditioner, and I remember sitting right next to it and watching 13 Rue Madeleine.

I miss Channel 43...oh wait...it's still around...I miss the OLD Channel 43. The Prize Movie, Super Host and all the great syndicated shows they used to air made for some very watchable TV. Thanks for the reminder!

My husband started out with Dan and Tom when they all began doing standup back in the old days (he grew up with Tom). I met Dan when we moved to LA, while he and Tom were working for Cheers. Super nice guy.

Do you realize that this kid, I believe his name is Danny O'shannon. He was the head writer for Cheers, Fraisier, Suddnly Susan, and wrote the last episode of Newhart, where newhart wakes up and we realize the NEW newhart show was a dream.

I was so young (3 or 4) the last time I saw this, I found it on accident. I remember the guy with the big hair- but never knew who John Lanigan was. I remember the Prize Movie, the spinning wheel, that "boioioing" sound (3:48) when the people got a question wrong, and the loud trumpety (is that a word?!) music... THANKS FOR THIS POST!

Prize Movie with John Lanigan was a great Cleveland program WUAB aired over the years while the other channels aired soaps during that time period. A neighboring program called Money Movie with Rich Morgan aired later in the afternoons on Youngstown's WKBN. Rich Morgan later became and still is their morning weather man. Happy retirement to John Lanigan as he leaves WMJI radio.

John also did a great job as morning DJ on the old WGAR 1220 AM-some of the stuff he came up with was hilarious! I recall 1 morning he had listeners call in for ideas on his "certain ethnic university"-one suggested for electrical engineering, "how to change a light bulb"

I was on The Prize Movie when I was about 8 (winter 1981)and I got to pull the envelope out of the bin (I think). There were 2 other kids there (a blond girl and an Italian boy) because we were shooting a commercial for United Way. If someone found that footage it would be great because none of my classmates believed me because they were in school that day. LOL! Channel 43 studio was an awesome place. They were so nice to us kids that day.

During the brief revival, the wheel was eliminated and you automatically won a prize just for answering the phone. The WUABTV was eliminated and a "Press Your Luck" style board with the prizes laid out (including $20 and $25 spaces) replaced it. Once you were on the air, the lights would flash around and whatever prize you hit, that's what you won. The film clip jackpot started at $100.43 (instead of $5.43). The plug was pulled when 43 got sold to Malrite, which also owned WOIO 19.

"Lanigan at Large" was a public affairs show that aired on Sunday nights on 43. He'd talk to city councilmen and whatnot about things that were going on around town. As far as people winning the jackpots go, It has happened quite a bit, but there was one time the jackpot got to over $3,000, and a few times where it went over $1,000. For that kind of money, you had to earn it. The prizes you got for guessing the face on the wheel (like the pen set) were provided in exchange for a plug.
@vjmlhds17 жыл бұрын
Let's see... I recognized a bunch of MASH actors on the wheel, Benny Hill, Andy Griffith, Archie and Edith, and that (plus Barnaby, cartoons, and the Star Movie) was pretty much the main attractions of 43's weekday programming back then.
@newstarcadefan14 жыл бұрын
You know I used to have WUAB-TV on Time Warner Cable, channel 7 (untill WYTV filed protection) and used to watch the prize movie before the cartoons on summers, days off from school, and sick days. It was very fun to see them try to guess everything. I guess times and tastes changed in the 1990's with the Trash TV boom.
@kjk76115 жыл бұрын
newstarcadefan Why didn't you just turn the channel to WUAB?
@vjmlhds16 жыл бұрын
And the "popular demand" thing was actually bringing the movie back due to a couple of new syndicated talk shows that 43 brought in to replace the movie bombing and being canceled. The Prize Movie was actually the only remnants of 43's heyday (including Superhost and Barnaby) to see the 90's. S and B were canceled in '89 because Cannell TV wanted to "modernize 43's image" (and cut costs). The movie survived until the big talk show boom of the early 90's, when 43 cut Lanigan (and his salary).
