Cleveland schools take fresh approach to lunch

Students don’t usually have a big appetite for school lunches, but CMSD is changing that by cooking up fresher meals, rather than just heating up those cellophane covered boxes of food. It’s called “semi-scratch” cooking, and it actually has some students asking for seconds.

All schools across the US is full of awful meals that are pre packaged. School lunch should be nutritious. Parents depend on schools to feed them when they aren’t with their kids and what we are offering them is shit even dogs and rats wouldn’t eat. So maybe instead of having some schools complaining about how it isn’t their fault that kids aren’t eating they should find out why and change it.

Like how it was when I was a kid. In Nevada the lunch budget is $4.50 per student. They get milk, the trashiest chicken nuggets, a roll and a cookie. Really? Someone is getting pockets lined. Pure corruption and laziness. Food industry is one field where you can serve better for less including the extra labor. Prepackaged Sysco foods have diminished the restaurant industry and schools. I mean health concerns aside, you could still line corporate pockets by simply calling out a fast food franchise and still save money! I'll bet just about any McDonald's franchisee would love a ten thousand Happy meal contract at $4 each served on site! Kids would get a burger, milk, caramel apple and a toy! Still cheaper and more nutritious than what they're getting now!

In my high school in Malaysia, our school would hire outside caterers to cook in our school, so in our cafeteria it would be like a mini foodcourt, however it was a bit more expensive, a bowl of rice or noodles would be about RM5 to RM7, many teenagers who couldn't afford the food would just buy some fruits or a sandwich

Prepackaged stuff is way more expensive. From scratch even with labor is way cheaper, healthier and tastier. Boils down to laziness and who's in who's pocket for the contracts. Sad.
@mdd4296
@mdd4296 5 жыл бұрын
"From scratch even with labor is way cheaper" Totally wrong. Especially in north america and western europe where wage and regulation are really high in comparison to the rest of the world. Mass production is always cheaper: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economies_of_scale. In fact, school kitchens are small scale mass production of sort where they buy ingredients in bulks to make thousands of identical dishes. You cant even begin to save that much money/capita cooking for yourself or your family. People who cook daily look at the price tag of prepackaged meals and think they are "more expensive" because those demographic honestly cant see alternatives to those hours outside cooking. Let's say you need roughly 1 hours to prepare every meals: wash and process the ingredients in different way (goes into your utility bills), heat them up (goes into your energy bills), organise them on dish, make the table... Then 30 minutes to clean up and wash the dishes after meals. The time and effort get longer the more members there are in your household... That's 1.5*3 = 4.5 hours a day. 4.5*30 = 135 hours a month = nearly 6 days/month. If those hours are simply sunk into a minimum wage job in the USA, it would earn $978,75. Not to mention those hour could be spent honing your income earning skills or train new ones, read about business opportunities or create new one (like... ironically enough make youtube video about cooking or cook for other people...) or simply pursue leisure outside cooking that is actually much better for you than a "healthy meal" like physical activities.

Does everything have to be wrapped or boxed these days in school lunches? (This is the second part of the video of them cooking REAL food.) How difficult (and cheap) is it to make egg salad and runs salad sandwiches? Celery/Carrot sticks with rsynch? Carrot raisin salad? Loaded baked potatoes? Half banana, half apple, have orange - as a choice or pre selected lunch item? The bread? Pumpernickel bread? Wheat bread? While grain bread? Let them choose or mix and match with the tuna/egg salad sandwiches. Milk, yogurt cups, cheese sticks or small round gudha cheese in red wax, home made pudding made with milk, frozen yogurt. BP & J sandwiches? Corn, homemade mashed potatoes with butter, coleslaw, fried okra, green beans, black beans, homemade chili and slaw/cheese hot dogs, taco salad, Cobb salad, red potatoes with seasonings, chicken & dumplings, baked chicken? Rice? Egg drop soup? Egg rolls? Tacos? Empanadas? Baked chips? Homemade chili? Grilled cheese? Hamburger/Cheese burger with lettuce, tomatoe and pickle? Milk, chocolate milk, orange juice, spoke juice, tea? Most parents could make these lunches for an average of 75 cents a day or $3.75/week. Schools buy in bulk (half price) and can't pass out more than a $0.50unch tray to be sold at ~$4.00/day/per child. Now staff do a third of the work because very little if any cooking required.

Wow!!! This story is what I really enjoy! I've seen the quality of the food & quantity go downhill for years now. This is refreshing news- gives me hope that other schools will model their lunch program after this one. It's a major issue. I can recall being a youngster & the smells from the cafeteria really stimulated my appetite, but the older I got the worse the lunches became. So, let's share this! And hope the "menu changes". If it's not appetizing to you, & you would turn up your nose, then the same goes for the kids..

Meanwhile in my school- We have salads with rotten lettuce, rancid melted cheese used in a variety of meals like tacos and Philly cheesesteaks, the fruit is often moldy, AND EVERY GODDAMN THING IS COVERED IN PEPPER! I once thought I should buy the carrots Because they looked alright but no they were soaked in so much oil that they were squishy and only tasted of black pepper! I also bought a chocolate chip muffin once and found an unidentifiable red berry inside. It’s atrocious.

It’s sad that kids are barely eating decent food recently in some parts of the country. I’ve always had good food in the cafeteria, and I’m not talking about stuff my parents packed or paid extra for, I’m talking free food. Never had to peel back any cellophane and had gray stuff. I’m thankful for the county I went to school in, in the sense that they gave us food I actually enjoyed.

My Junior High has the same things everyday which gets boring sometimes but better than my old Elementary school. Each day you can pick from nachos with cheese and beans on the side in a takeout box (the beans are really gross though) peanut butter and jelly with some spicy goldfish, string cheese, and like an apple or some fruit, a ham/turkey or some kind of sub (they have different meat sometimes) with some cheetos and some fruit. And they have little baggies of broccoli and carrots. And fruit as a side. Plus the best thing over all is Mountain Mixes pizza, they also have it my city's Highschool. But now that I think about it they do serve a normal school lunch but they never really sell any of those.( but I did have a corndog once) But lunch is more expensive than and Elementary school

Yeah my school didn't have very good food but at least I didn't have to pay for the breakfast or lunch that because of this they just don't do that because it's doesn't do that because it usually just does popcorn Friday or you have to pay for the popcorn and other stuff but they mainly do that because they can afford it and also because the poor people or the people who can't afford it can eat food so that way they don't starve during times when they can go to school.

The trays are overloaded with enough food for three kids. These kids are small, and the food amounts are almost as big as them. They don't need four and five servings of different foods, not including milk. It's too much. It will go in the trash. Cut back on amounts, and you can save a ton on food. If they want seconds, then let them have it.
